there was a notable deflation in his demeanor and voice when you said this, moving past his broad-shouldered frame into the near icebox sized hotel room. you were quick to unload backpack, bedroll, and gun holsters from your body, letting them land with a quiet scuff on floor so you could give your shoulders some relief.
vash had yet to go any further than the doorway, his own pack supported over his shoulder by a taut string pinched between two prosthetic fingers that ached despite no circulation through them. his eyes swept the room slowly; tentatively even, before he moved his feet a few inside paces to close the door, lowering his things on a little table next to it.
nothing in the room felt accommodating at first glance: a small table by the door, a slightly larger wooden desk with one short leg and a chair in the adjacent corner, a cramped connected bathroom with a makeshift shower, and a single bed with a brass frame pushed up against the window as some sort of shoddy interior design choice. it hardly seemed enough for a struggling couple, much less your party of two trying to navigate unsavory traveling arrangements.
"it's not that bad!" vash chimed with a brittle edge in his voice, trying to convince himself of those very words. "at least there's a bed, and we have better cover from the sandstorm. we also have running water, that's a real luxury, y'know?"

vash, on the other hand, just seemed content to have four walls surrounding him for once. you hadn't known him long enough to get the nitty-gritty on previous sleeping arrangements; but, considering the sixty-million bounty sitting on his shoulders, he spent more nights asleep with the sandworms than a dirty pillow and hard floors.
"thanks for getting us the room," he said, looking at you with something of a timid smile. his red coat was already bundled in his arms, giving you a chance to see the black turtleneck he always wore underneath and how the print of his biceps and chest showed through just enough to let your mind wander. "I don't actually mind if you take the bed, just let me have one of the blankets."
you immediately ripped one of the top sheets from the bed, pretending not to notice the thin layer of dust rising in a faint grey plume that settled in the air like a haze. "sure, yeah. it gets cold at night. stay warm."
he took it from you with great gentleness, shoulders dipping forward, neck stooping so low you were nearly able to see the top of his head. it was as though he were trying to contort himself to look smaller in your presence. for a man of his stature, it wasn't just uncomfortable but impossible.
you thought about it for a while, even once the cursory conversation ran its course, leaving you both to your own devices in separate corners of the room; you on the bed, vash hunkered down closest to the door (a habit you started noticing in him). from time-to-time, you'd take your eyes off your spread of wares on dirty sheets for him to hastily busy his hands with something when you'd look at him.
so, you'd try him: "hey, you got something to say?"

vash the stampede was an enigma; you thought so even with your eyes fogged by sleep and deep, inky darkness some many hours later. life attuned to the slightest shift in sand made the groan of bending floorboards sound like a train pounding on railroad tracks, rousing you from slumber just as the bathroom light shut off, and you saw vash's dark silhouette slinking through the room.

vash sqwuaked in surprise. meanwhile, you propped your body upright with a haggard sigh, clenching your eyes a few times to adjust to the new brightness. by the time your vision cleared, bearing returning to you with resounding alertness, you realized that vash was staring back rather owlishly. to make matters worse--or, more interesting--he had scant traces of coverage on his body besides a white towel tucked at the waist and one crimped around his neck.
he gave an embarrassed smile after a while, scratching the outside of his nose. "uh, sorry. I thought I was being quiet enough. I didn't mean to wake--hey, you okay?"
the trajectory of his questions changed so quickly that it would've been enough to give you whiplash had you been listening. you were on your feet in front of him, barely registering the cold touch of his prosthetic hand on your bare skin, the hair on your arms and neck standing straight. it was hard to concentrate on anything other than the nonuniform scars, blossoming bruises, patchwork made of metal, cavernous pits of missing flesh displayed on his chest like a wall of shame.
he was absolutely covered in them; stories of agony, triumph, and despair. there were some that had faded with a good deal of time, others much newer, and you wagered fresh to the touch. the scars you were most interested in were the ones that told the hardest truths; raised, fiery, angry beneath your fingertips despite how he tried to flinch away from you.
this was the vash the stampede that no one got to see. the one who refused to wage war or do harm, despite his very existence bringing harm to those he wished to protect.

-Fugo in general is a kind and caring man, always making sure you feel just as happy as he is with you
-Similar to Bucciarati, he’d check on you every so often. Be it daily reminders to drink water and eat, or just genuinely asking you how you’re feeling
-If you ever felt sad he’d always offer you a shoulder to cry on
-Very observant and a good listener. Would remember the slightest detail you mentioned about something you love half a year ago

-It didn’t even take too long and you two were already like best friends
