Sometimes people ask me about my poetry inspirations, and I’ll be entirely honest, beyond seeing a clipping from Anne Carson or Siken I don’t read too much. I think it shows in the clumsiness of my work.

I really enjoy rap though, it’s clever and emotional and accessible poetry. Like Lupe Fiasco’s Words I Never Said, Mobb Deep’s Shook Ones Pt. 2, Nas’s NY State of Mind, Dua Saleh’s Bankrupt etc are all these really beautifully crafted pieces of work. Like pick one and really listen. So many gems.

I’ve also been reading the Sufi poet Rami’s works — got to read a lot of it tonight, actually, and it’s just so romantic and gripping. Never have I felt such love come off a page, or from anything else honestly.
