“We should probably make a list of people to speak to who weren’t guests, in case Albus said something to any of them, or they heard something useful” Frank mused, thoughtfully. The Aurors were concentrating on the guests at the gala, so the Order could focus elsewhere. “Moody was probably assigning himself to a patrol duty that didn’t exist, but we should ask him anyway” he shrugged. “It won’t be easy to figure out who was the last person though, most guests I have interviewed have claimed either not to have seen him at all or not to have spoken to him”.

“You should ask Moody. If I do it he’ll have me arrested for failure to lick the Minister’s boots. He won’t give me an inch.” Lily said tiredly. “People who weren’t guests. Aberforth, Hogwarts teachers, the Order... In the nicest way possible: does Dumbledore have friends?”

“You’re a star” she grinned, pulling out her purse so that she could pay for her items with the galleons she had gotten, with some difficulty, from her vault earlier that afternoon. “Better than me, I have a terrible case of impatience. Puzzles vex me” she chuckling, shaking her head. She placed the galleons and sickles in Lily’s palm, before pulling out a small, ruby red card. “This will get you in without having to queue, just flash it at the bouncer” she smiled, handing over the card. “I think that’s all for today”.

“Thanks,” Lily flashed a smile, ringing her up. It was nice, to feel like she’d actually helped someone. “Take the immune booster with food to avoid sneezing fits, and I’ll be seeing you, then.”

He chuckled, glad to know he wasn’t the only one who referred to the worst of his feelings as ‘old friends’. Overtiredness had been his best one lately, second only to Dorcas. “Very true” he smirked, lifting his mug and tapping it against her own, before raising it to his lips and drinking deeply. It tasted terrible and he made a mental note to purchase a proper coffee machine for Dorcas later, whether she wanted one or not. “I don’t think this lot know what the meaning of calm is, I mean, do you?” he asked, raising an eyebrow. He was pretty sure the world was always in a semi-permanent state of panic these days. “Everything is still fresh. The tension won’t dissipate any time soon, though I guess I could start writing prescriptions for everyone”.

“I was thinking... chamomile. Quicker than filling all those prescriptions in the middle of the night. Nothing wrong with a simple muggle infusion, if you ask me. No idea if Dor keeps any on hand, though.” Lily slipped down from the counter and began poking around, a little aimlessly. It all felt kind of... small. The hole they were in was getting deeper and deeper and Lily had tea and a shitty cup of coffee.

“you’re killing me here, red.” moody said, rubbing the side of his head with his index finger. this did not need to be a complicated situation. why did they always have to make it so complicated? “don’t make me tattle on you. it’s annoying, it takes a lot of time, and it’s never a good look on either of us. “I’m just saying, you’re not the only person here with a job to do. I know you think you’re the only one who can do anything, but you don’t need to burn bridges with every resource that isn’t up the Minister’s arse.” One of these days Lily would get Alastor Moody to treat her with an iota of respect. “You’re wasting your time if you don’t give me something to work with. I haven’t had time to get information out of anyone. I was trying to, and an Auror with a God complex sat down and started insulting me.”

hmmm. guarding something, guarding someone… it was a potential avenue. it was a good thought. dorcas made the mental note to start looking for anything that stuck out, and to mention it to moody, longbottom, and king. they would have more connections to follow the lead if it turned any up. “I’ll ask, and keep you posted if I hear anything else about it.” they needed a way to keep a better more accessible record of those sort of patterns. dorcas’s brain was whirling towards a solution long before she ever settled to identify the root of the problem. what was the most efficient way to cross reference that sort of information? “I won’t put anyone in danger that doesn’t ask to be there. no one is asking tonight. so tonight we’re just going to stay as close as possible. let everyone grieve and be uncomfortable and steel up for tomorrow. it’s not going to be an easy week for anyone. there’s going to be a lot of nitty gritty to get done.” she reassured lily, pausing and letting her head lean over to rest on her friend’s. it might not be the right decision. it might not help them in the long run, but it felt right in the moment. dorcas had to trust that instinct. her amber eyes closed. “I know. I do. I just don’t want you to worry about any more than you have to. I couldn’t do it without you, though. between you and me, lils. I’ve studied a lot of magic, I’ve read a lot of books, I’ve heard a lot of really clever people share their wisdom, and I still don’t know a damn thing besides the fact that I’m better for all you guys. you’re not allowed to leave me alone now.”

“Agreed,” Lily sighed. She’d been left alone enough in her life. She didn’t know what she’d do if Doras picked up one day, decided that was quite enough Lily for one lifetime and left. “You don’t need to keep things off my shoulders, though. I promise you, I’m going to worry either way.”

There was no protecting Lily Evans from their own reality. They closed their eyes, resting on Dor’s shoulder for a moment. This was the only way they ever found quiet, when there was someone to rest with, or their laughter got loud enough to drown out the cold hard facts that occupied the better part of their mind. It could be worse. Work felt better, too. Helping something. Lily just wasn’t getting a quiet life. 

“You’re sure I can’t persuade you to take a nap or something?”

Walden was fairly certain he just saw his life flash before his eyes. Evans and his abuela in the same pew he could handle. His abuela was fucking lovely and could do no wrong. Evans telling his abuela that he’d bargained church days? He’d be a dead man.

“Listen I know we’re mortal enemies and all but that’s just uncalled for. She would murder me in the church with her disappointment alone.” He grumbled. “What if I pretend you don’t exist for the entirety of the service and you get the next month?”

Now, that was something. An entire month at one church - luxury, at this point. She did like the idea of getting him in trouble. McNair was afraid of his grandmother’s disappointment killing him? Lily spent her days trying not to get actually murdered. The whole thing was ridiculous; but this was Church. They had an understanding.

“Fine. Just don’t think this is a standing agreement or something. And you can’t just change your mind next time your abuela frowns at you. This is the deal.”

“what have you got secondhand?” alastor asked, noting momentarily to check in with meadowes as well. the two went hand in hand. if red knew anything about the apothecary purchases, then so would the other. “don’t you worry. I tell the people who need to know which as we’ve already established, is not you right now. what about your most recent interactions with the headmaster. when was the last you saw him? did he say anything interesting or confusing or out of character?”

“Hm. If only I knew what might be interesting. I don’t need to know those things, you see, as it’s not like I work closely with the man or do any work that might involve knowing where to find him or locating missing persons...” She was walking a fine line here. Lily didn’t want to hinder any investigations, but honestly - the Order was a legitimate organization. On more than one occasion Lily had saved people by being able to operate outside the Ministry, because the Ministry was fucked up. Alastor Moody was a ridiculous and impractical person. Way she saw it, he was hindering both her investigation and his own.

Dmitry followed the clerk, keeping an eye on the door in case someone he recognised came in. It wasn’t as if anyone could exactly fire him– benefits of being his own boss, not that Ivan would have ever fired him before anyways– but the last thing he needed was a reputation for downing hangover cures on his way into work. “I don’t suppose you sell them with a, um, discreet label? I’m sure I’m not the only customer that’d pay extra to have these packaged in takeout coffee cups or whatever.”

“There are certain regulations regarding the labeling of most Potions. Ever since the International Potions Summit of 1954, in tandem with the debut of Cleary’s Quick Cork System - well -” Lily blushed and cleared their throat. Nerd moment. “You could always bring in your own cup and pour it in on the way out. Provided you’re going to use it in the next twenty-four hours, of course. Otherwise it could ferment.”

“And that right there is why I keep my nose out of the war shit and serve alcohol for a living.” She rubbed at the back of her neck and had to think about Lily’s question for a minute, “Quiet lately, but it’s pretty expected. Although last night I had to break up a fight between a vampire and a werewolf. I really need a new bouncer. Larry’s always asleep in my office.”

Lily tried not to turn sour. She didn’t have a choice about being involved in ‘war shit’ - if you asked her, nobody did. Not doing anything was waiting for everybody like her to die. “Ach, well,” she said, trying and failing to keep the darkness out of her voice. “Is it hard finding bouncers? Seems like there’d be plenty of people who like that sort of thing.” She’d certainly like to throw a person or two out of a building herself now and then.

James knew the anger simmering between his skin didn’t have anything to do with Lily. It was all stemming from the fact that he felt so in the dark. He always had the answers. When it came to the marauders. To his future. He usually knew. “The Death Eaters have been up to so much shit it could’ve been something completely different! Maybe! I don’t… I don’t know,” he huffed. “Dumbledore is… Dumbledore. This could just be some sick fucking test for all we know. All I’m saying is that everyone is jumping to conclusions and it’s not doing us any good,” James finished. Himself included - he was so certain that there wasn’t any real danger and yet… he was jumping to that conclusion just as everyone else was frightened their headmaster had bene hurt. “I’ll just fuck right off, then, if that’s better for you.”

“Trying to find out what actually happened isn’t jumping to conclusions, it’s being responsible. Christ, James, I just asked if you have heard anything! What’s true is going to be true whether either of us likes it or not. What is up your arse this time?” She should get out of this conversation. It was trending downward, her anger going watery, her voice dangerously close to simply panicked and sad.

She nodded in understanding. She tried to stay out of the war as best she could, but she heard things, she saw people get hurt. She wasn’t blind to it. “It’s a good thing you’re still here, but you’re right, it’s definitely rough…” she murmured, taking the ingredients from Lily. “Y’know, it’s probably better safe than sorry, right?” she asked, sucking on her bottom lip. It couldn’t hurt. “Thank you for helping me, I would get a bit lost otherwise. Next time you find yourself with a free evening, you should come by Eclipse. I’ll pour you a drink on the house”.

Lily snagged the immune boosting potion, set it on the counter with the mucus. “It’s no trouble. I like this sort of thing, you know? It’s like a good puzzle. I’ll gladly take you up on that anyway, though, I like drinks too. Is that all? Any questions?”

He chuckled softly, shaking his head as he took a few pieces of butterscotch, popping one into his mouth and chewing. It was all he had eaten in the last few hours, having been with his parents rather than present at the gala. “You never know when you might need some. I have deep pockets” he grinned. He had enchanted his robe pockets with an undetectable extension charm, so that he could carry everything he needed. “We know that Dumbledore was in attendance. We know that at some point he disappeared, and that it was only discovered when Alastor stepped outside and saw the dark mark. Currently no bodies have been found on the premises, so the assumption…” he sighed, rubbing his temples, “… the assumption is that Dumbledore has been kidnapped. He didn’t return to Hogwarts. Perhaps we should speak to Aberforth? Just in case he knows something we don’t…”

“Can’t hurt, I guess.” Lily made a note of it. She kind of reckoned she knew more about Albus Dumbledore’s whereabouts than Aberforth did, but she couldn’t deny the power of siblings, even when they weren’t... close. Ugh. Now was not the time to think about Petunia. “We still don’t know who spoke to him last? What was Moody doing outside? Patrol changes?”

“Seems like there’s always something at stake.” Lily grimaced. “I hate to think what it could be this time... Tell me something else, Jones. How’s business? Anything interesting?”

“Your abuela is more than welcome to share my pew,” Lily said, although she doubted both the truth of this and the idea that anybody related to McNair would accept such an invitation. She could feel herself softening, and that was ridiculous. This was Walden McNair. Just because her entire family was dead or hated her...  “After services I can explain to her how her beloved grandson traded Easter for Christmas.”

          He wanted everything to not feel so grand. If that made sense. So much felt monumental, even the smallest victories felt huge and every time they lost, it felt like taking too many steps backwards. Nikoli knew that’s how it worked. The Order were underdogs in this war. As much as Nikoli wanted, he didn’t know if he was on the winning side or not. He wondered if Max would have been proud of him or if he’d be on the other side of this war. Some days he had no idea. He was plagued with nightmares over it and he knew he woke Reggie up in the middle of the night because of them. 

          “I don’t know if I have it in me to be…” he trailed off, “helpful with this. I already feel like nothing I do ends up going right.” It wasn’t anyone else’s problem to help him feel useful. Especially not Lily’s. “Does it count as dropping out if I got fired?” He missed being an Auror. Being a freelance artist was somewhat nice because it gave him more time for the Oder. “I’ll take a jacket though.”

“I was fired too, yeah? Well, kicked out. Flunked. I’ll put you on the list. We’re still working on the logo.” Lily paused, thoughtful. “Why don’t we get you some tea? I always find it’s awfully hard to go wrong with tea.”

They knew a thing or two about everything they did turning out wrong. Founded the Auror drop-outs club, didn’t they? And they always wished there was someone there to make them a cup of tea.
