Six years after creating this blog I have officially made the transition... from "Miss" to "Dr"!!!

The times of Corona have been pretty weird for me but the craziest thing is that months ahead of when I expected I am actually officially a doctor!!

I don't know when work will start but we had our virtual graduation ceremony last week, and I can tick the "Dr" box on forms now...

I sort of feel complete.

Hi Sofia, do you have any structured 'mental health days' i.e. days of from uni to focus on your mental health/do work at home and your uni is aware of it? I'm starting medical school in October and I don't know if it's common if it were, I feel it would be really helpful as I have a history with depression and anxiety.

Hiya! I've never had a structured mental health day, because its not easy to predict when you might need one. It's also pretty difficult to timetable in a regular "day off" because at the end of the day, you are doing a full time course and you can't skip 1/5 of it realistically. Days off means a lot of catch up as well.

But I'm not sure if that means you can't do it.

My suggestion would be to make an appointment with your Disability and Dyslexia Support Service as soon as you can, and they can discuss reasonable adjustments with you.

It might be the case that it's possible for the reading years but not for the clinical years, or that they would put you into a mentorship programme to help with the anxiety you have about going in. I had a mentor throughout med school provided by DDSS and it was incredibly useful in staying on task and generally keeping on track with med school.

reading this back it almost sounds like a threat lol. sometimes I feel like people (in this case, this nurse) are prepared to make life hard by default without giving someone a chance

In 1966, 8-month old David Reimer was being circumcised at a Winnipeg hospital. During the procedure, a general practitioner filling in for the regular surgeon seared the boy’s penis with an electric cauterising machine. His penis was so badly burned that it eventually fell off.

David’s parents sought advice from Dr. John Money, a sex researcher at a Baltimore hospital. Money decided to use David as an experiment to prove that gender depends on how a child is raised.. Money claimed parental influences and society formed sexual identity. He suggested that the rest of David’s genitals be removed and that he be prescribed female hormones. David would live as a girl, it was determined. His name was changed to “Brenda” and his progress was compared with that of his identical twin, Brian. As they grew older, the differences between the two diminished. “I tried really hard to rear her as a gentle lady but it didn’t work,” said David’s mother.

Despite being dressed in girl’s clothing combined with years of counselling and therapy as well as hormone treatments, David insisted he was a boy. When David was 15-years-old, he learnt about the botched surgery from his father. From that point onward, he rejected further treatment, including an operation that was planned to create a vagina. David underwent surgery to remove his breasts and to construct a penis. He changed his name back to David and eventually went on to get married. He was never able to father children himself but became an outstanding stepfather.

His case created an upheaval in theories on sexual identity. Tragically, on the 4th of May, 2004, David committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.

Brian also killed himself. Both children were sexually abused as part of Dr. John Money’s experiment. That case had very little to do with sexual identity, and a lot more to do with child sexual abuse and the harm that forced femininity causes in general. It’s just normalized for little girls and no one thinks twice about why so many women attempt suicide.

So, this guy, Martin Pistorius, fell into a coma when he was 12 years old and eventually awoke completely paralyzed, at least physically. He was misdiagnosed. Doctors believed he was in a completely vegetative state, but in reality, he had regained full consciousness and awareness. He just didn’t possess any motor function, so he couldn’t communicate to anyone that he was alive in there. He lived this way for 12 years before he overcame it by sheer force of will and was given the tools to communicate. He tells his story in his book, Ghost Boy. Since then he’s also been the subject of the first episode of Invisibilia on NPR and had his own TedTalk.

Anyway, the breaking point that incited his plan of escape was being forced to watch Barney reruns all day, everyday at his care center. Sitting in front of the TV, he learned to tell the time by the shadows on the wall. If he had time he could know when Barney would end. With the ability to measure his days, he was able to pull himself out of the void and ultimately start down the path to recovery. Today, Martin can communicate whatever he wants with the help of a computer program, but there’s one thing he can’t articulate: “I cannot even express to you how much I hated Barney.”

So it turns out that the primal hatred people have toward Barney is strong enough to pull a disembodied consciousness out of the abyss of existential despair and into the physical world out of pure spite
