At some point your children will encounter media that promotes fascism. It may be a band that uses Nazi imagery. It may be a youtuber who “jokes” about genocide. It may be an article in their school’s history book that seeks to erase and whitewash historically difficult subjects. It may even be introduced by a “friend” who uses their companionship to bait your children into toxic communities much like how 4chan operated in the early 2000s.  If you are a parent you need to prepare yourself to have a real conversation with your children about the reality and dangers of fascism. Not to simply ban things outright with an authoritative order (And thus make it an “Edgy” sort of forbidden fruit for angsty teens.) but to actually sit down and have a real conversation about these things that respects the maturity of your own child and the reality that you cannot completely control their own beliefs and actions.  Don’t make the mistakes of previous generations, whose warnings are now laughable because they so easily fell into the beliefs that video games, D&D, Harry Potter, or rock music were going to morally corrupt their children, and thus began a campaign of overt and authoritative banning. Give your children to tools they need to recognize fascism, to understand where it leads, and to ultimately to protect themselves when you are no longer there.

When I was struggling with my sadness earlier this year, I was actually experiencing a lot of distress and shame about how sad I felt. I hadn’t even realized it was happening, but I felt like I “shouldn’t be this sad”, and that “my sadness was a weakness”. None of that was true! But once I acknowledged this, I could actually address how I was tunneling myself into more sadness, and now I do a much better job of accepting my sadness as it is. 🌻 I hope this piece can help you in some way.

ok first of all i spend all day everyday with teenagers so 95% of the time ive heard it before so. ya boring.

but second of all judging by today’s greek mythology incident wherein we were discussing aeneas and dido and this ONE FREAKING KID kept saying ‘anus and dildo’ IM JUST SAYING SOMETIMES WE DO LAUGH. in fact sometimes we laugh so hard that we can’t stop and we have to physically put our heads down on our desks for a mo and all we can say is that we don’t know what any of those words mean and the kids know i’m lying and i know i’m lying but its just the only way to deal.

I find it darkly ironic that professional development for teachers seems to always utilize the exact teaching strategies that get us dinged in observations.

I’m not engaged here, Miss. Where’s the formative assessment? Where are the high yield strategies? How are you differentiating for ELLs and ESEs?

I get presenters who work with someone who can put together powerpoints. Whether or not the presenters can use the software themselves is questionable.

My favorite part is when the subject of the professional development IS “effective teaching strategies.” Because they’ll spend 90% of the time reading straight from powerpoints, and the other 10% of the time is “exercises” which literally consist of “read and regurgitate from this handout we found when we googled ‘teaching strategies’”

The only mildly effective professional development I’ve ever gone to was one on Technology for 1:1 Classrooms, and that’s only because I wrote down the names of the interesting ones and checked them out on my own time. This professional development was only useful for that purpose the first time… we’ve had the same PD with the exact same sessions for 4 years now. -_-

Pd’s often dont even include strategies to help ese and ells. I luckily specialized in ese so I know them, but I have been attending ela pd’s that dont even bring up what you can maybe do if you have a student who struggles to write a solid paragraph or a student who has to read a 7th grade passage when they comprehend at a 5th grade level. Like damn they really dont care if we are prepared to help the student. Huh….

One good PD I went to did talk about reading strategies and had us practice them by reading some science article (that was way over all of our heads). However, this was also a year long cohort involving monthly google hangouts and seven in person days. Two of them were the days that five of the eight people on our team were out for two days in a row. Information was great, but it could have been done a lot shorter.

We once had a pd about “note taking” and then we had to practice our note taking skills throughout a lecture about effectively lecturing. In the end none of us (principal included) could figure out if we were supposed to learn about notes or lecturing… I learned about neither
