The time has come!

Greetings everyone! It’s been a little while since our last post hasn’t it? Well, the wait is over!

Autumn has fallen upon us (get it?!) and you know what that means? Pumpkin spice!! But for From Our Basement Gaming it means continuing our Halloween tradition with all new episodes of our Nightmare Before Christmas Oogie’s Revenge Let’s Play!

For those newer to our channel in October of last year we started a Let’s Play of The Nightmare Before Christmas Oogie’s Revenge and played it as our only game for the month of October, we last left off on part 13 so we hope you will tune in for our 14th part on Monday October 3rd!

Gaming Convention

Hello everyone, Kevin is finally back and today’s entry will be a little bit shorter but I wanted to briefly talk about a convention Conner and I went to last weekend.

The convention is near Philadelphia and it’s called Too Many Games. There we met two gaming Youtube legends: The Angry VIdeo Game Nerd and Caddicarus.

Caddy had a Q and A panel and the line to get in was ridiculous. Everyone was shocked by how many people he’d attracted. Originally he had planned to make a panel on how he made it on Youtube but he didn’t have the time to prepare that so scrapped it for a Q+A. Regardless, it was a good panel. I think it’s important to learn from Youtubers who’ve inspired us.

AVGN didn’t have a panel like that but he was doing a charity give-away. Even though we only caught the tail end of it we could tell they certainly had some interesting props they were giving away. We also had the honor to get autographs of the Youtubers I mentioned above.

Of course we bought some interesting games, How could we go to a video game convention and not buy games? There was also a lot of pain...both from the wallet and from what we didn’t have the budget for. No worries though, we have some interesting games that will probably make their way to our channel one day.

Gaming with friends: Crash Bandicoot

Hey there! This is Kevin back with another entry!

So far we’ve covered how Ecco the dolphin and Donkey Kong Country impacted me and my experiences with them. This time I want to talk about the Crash Bandicoot games.

Now, unlike Ecco the Dolphin and Donkey Kong Country I didn’t experience Crash Bandicoot the year it first came out. In fact, my first game was the second Crash Bandicoot game: Cortex Strikes Back. My best friend at the time owned a copy of it and we played it together at her house. I remember having a lot of fun both with watching my friend and playing the game myself. It took me until middle school before I’d actually buy a Playstation of my own and get to play the first Crash Bandicoot game. After that Crash Bandicoot games became my go-to games to play with friends.

Conner and I only recently played through five of the main series games together not long before creating our channel, thus continuing the tradition of Crash Bandicoot as a game franchise I play with friends. We’ve played through the first two Crash Bandicoot games and are finishing up the third on our channel. Be sure to check them out if you missed them!

Childhood memories of Donkey Kong Country

The year was 1994 and the local Toys R Us store had many TVs and video game consoles set up, advertising the newest games. I absolutely loved this part of the store. Who wouldn’t love the opportunity to actually get to play a demo of the newest, cutting edge video games?

That day there was one game in particular that caught my eye. It was a Super Nintendo game but it looked different than the other Super Nintendo games I’d played before. The background and even the character himself seemed almost...3D. These days pretty much all games are 3D but back then a 3D character model was practically unheard of. This game was Donkey Kong Country.

Donkey Kong Country is a game I spent a lot of time playing with my mother as a child. We’d spend hours playing the 2-Player Co-op option where player one was Donkey Kong and player two his friend? Nephew? Cousin? Diddy Kong. We struggled our way through the various jungles, underwater, factory, and mine cart levels. The game was a challenging but fun experience and was absolutely beautiful to look at.

Another aspect of Donkey Kong Country that always stood out to me was it’s music. Visually Donkey Kong Country was 3D and seemed to have varied layers in the worlds, but the music also seemed 3D in it’s own way. The melodies were atmospheric and often matched the ambiance and in some cases even the timing of your progress in the stage (assuming you complete the level in a timely manner).  To this day the Donkey Kong Country soundtrack (and especially the soundtrack of it’s sequel!) are among my top 5 favorite video game soundtracks of all time.

This is one of the major reasons why when it came to picking a Super Nintendo video to start with on our channel we opted for the Donkey Kong Country series. The second being it’s co-op 2-player option which, while the Mario series also included co-op in it’s Super Mario World game you couldn’t play the level at the same time like you can in the Donkey Kong Country games. We’ve had a blast playing through the first two Donkey Kong Country games and we’re now starting the 3rd Donkey Kong Country game. To commemorate our one-year annivesary and more importantly to celebrate the 30-year anniversary of Ecco the Dolphin we enlisted the help of my dad to create a cake! Ecco the dolphin has had a huge impact on both of us here at FromOurBasementGaming and we both have many fond memories of the series!

Ecco the dolphin remains one of my top three favorite games to this day, along with it’s wonderful sequal The Tides of Time. We’ve played both of these games on our channel and we are currently working through the third title: Ecco the dolphin Defender of the Future. Feel free to check them out if you haven’t already. Happy One-Year Anniversary!

It’s hard to believe that one year ago today we released our very first video on From Our Basement Gaming. The first part of our Ecco the dolphin Let’s Play. https://youtu.be/R-VKe8EmwtM .

The idea of From Our Basement Gaming came to Conner and I during a difficult time. The pandemic had kept us apart for several months and we were excited to get back to playing games. At first, due to safety concerns Conner and i could only hang out in my basement. My mom had helped me set up all of my video game consoles in the basement so for a while Conner and I simply played video games and reminisced about our childhoods.

That’s what sparked the idea of From Our Basement Gaming. We enjoyed playing video games and primarily played retro games so why not do something practical with that? So, with Conner’s gaming skills and my...ability to talk...we started recording our play sessions.

We decided on Ecco the Dolphin as the first Let’s Play we’d record because we feel that Ecco the Dolphin is an often unappreciated game that deserves more love. Ecco played a big part in my childhood and I was able to share that experience with Conner. So, we hope through our Let’s Play of Ecco the Dolphin that you’ll be able to feel it too.

Wednesdays became our day to play Donkey Kong Country. Another game that had a big impact on us growing up. This time we had a co-op game so viewers would also get to see my lack of gaming skills. We’re now finishing up Donkey Kong Country 2 and have enjoyed playing as a team so far.

We crash into Fridays with Crash Bandicoot. A game I played a little later in my childhood but enjoyed immensely nonetheless. I felt including three games would give the channel variety and keep everyone entertained. Besides, who doesn’t like a little bandicoot in their lives?

Lastly but certainly not least-ly we have the Kevin-solo Sims 4 legacy let’s play. I wanted to include my love for Sims games as I personally spend way too much time playing different sims families to this day. It’s pretty exciting because you never know exactly what’s going to happen.
