Hello! I've just discovered your lovely blog and I've had a thought concerning Thorin/Dori. I agree that, sexually, they're not really compatible, for all the reasons you gave, but I think perhaps Dori would be quite good at mothering Thorin. Not where anyone could see, Thorin being so serious and concerned with his pride as a king. But I get the feeling that Thorin needs a safe place where he can be cuddled and kissed and I think Dori would be quite good at that.

Oh, I absolutely agree that there’s much Dori could do for Thorin. I just don’t think Dori would get much out of it for himself! He’d be a great comfort to his king if requested, but I think Dori spends so much time mothering and looking after others that what he really needs in a partner is someone who will look after him. Balin and Gandalf fit that bill rather nicely. :D

Two mugs for tea, two cups of wine, AND YET STILL THE BLASTED WIZARD CAN'T TAKE A DAMN HINT. What is Dori meant to do? Start unbraiding his beard in plain sight? Might as well go traipsing naked through an avalanche if that's what it will take to land the old fool.

Among most dwarves of status, this sort of overt flirtation, especially with a non-dwarf, is considered highly salacious. It would be cause for scandal if Dori weren't already known to be from a family rather fallen from grace. It's all a bit desperate really, and at least Oin's eyebrows are raised, even if no one else in the company much holds with stuffy old traditions. A slow enduring courtship might ensure a slow enduring love, but Dori's had quite enough slow enduring heartbreaks for one life-time--he simply doesn't have the time to waste anymore on subtleties!
