"rage against the vaccine" is the only futurama episode i just cannot watch anymore due to it Hitting A Little Close To Home and i've been thinking about my issue with it, and i feel like the stakes just... aren't played up enough to resonate with its audience post-COVID trauma, and the presentation is held back by the fact it's a COVID parody while simultaneously not allowing itself to make strong enough points about COVID.

like, the episode raises some very interesting points. a virus that generates pure rage? perfectly on-the-nose satire, makes logical sense. the fact it originated from a marginalized, historically isolated group in-universe, resulting in further alienation and isolation? perfect bonus opportunity to call out the prejudice (i.e. sinophobia) that arose from COVID, and even the social justice movements that followed as the anxiety and isolation and useless feeling really built up inside us all. and yeah that's a little too bleak for futurama, but i don't think it'd be too outlandish to lean more into the "them vs. us" mentality, given they did address how selfishness complicated the efforts to stop the spread, and brought up the spread of conspiracy theories to weaken the community... which was unfortunately pretty downplayed by the end :/

but the biggest thing for me is that i don't feel the life-or-death stakes from this. society can't function if everybody is too angry to focus, and they did illustrate how this puts people in danger. but i didn't feel like explovid was more than an inconvenience, nobody was at risk of dying from it, and that makes it a lot harder to watch because like, why aren't they reacting more strongly? why aren't they afraid?

and i think it could have been more interesting if they leaned away from the direct COVID parallel and instead made it a straightforward zombie apocalypse plot, just with an anger plague, but then you'd have to answer the question of where the virus truly originated and maybe they didn't want to give any credence to COVID conspiracy theories (despite joking about them in other capacities, including portraying certain vaccine conspiracies as true which i did admittedly find funny -- they did have good satire on how pharmaceutical companies prioritize profits and competition over actually helping people). and the voodoo stuff was deliberately as close to vaccine science as possible, so they didn't feel full sci-fi enough to add some emotional distance.

i just feel like they had to cram in so many obligatory jokes about COVID and hit this imperfect spot of being too close to the pandemic for people to want to joke about it but also having spent too much time in production to stay current to how people feel about it.

(granted this is coming off of long story short which IMO did the best job of incorporating the complicated feelings surrounding COVID and showing actual life or death stakes that permanently affected the cast but that's a very different show than the more episodic futurama. so it's an unfair comparison perhaps.)

checking the futurama tag and man there are so many posts that are quoting things that just. do not exist. and yeah it's prob just memes but the pedant in me kind of hopes people don't get the Wrong Idea lol

like that post using a leela of her own to discredit transphobia in sports is really great but it makes me sad imagining people going into futurama expecting that scene, and instead getting not one but Two episodes that are just...... incredibly dated and cringe in their portrayal of not just transness but also gender as a whole.

(a leela of her own is a great episode though. especially as a ND woman. feeling obligated to represent your whole gender but still being limited by something you can't change is a harsh but relatable story to me✌️😔)
