The house didn’t look abandoned.
It looked patient and almost like it was waiting for anyone who dared walk into it.
It stood at the edge of town where the streetlights thinned and the pavement became uneven. Where the trees grew thicker and the air smelled faintly of damp rain and animal manure.
The locals said it had been empty for decades. Some said longer. The story always changed depending on who told it.
But no one ever said it felt empty, everyone always said it seemed like someone, no. That something lived in that house.
The porch sagged beneath its own age, wood warped and split from years of winter frost.
Paint peeled in long, curling strips, revealing older colors beneath, a pale blue under gray, like the house had shed identities over time.
The windows were clouded, the glass slightly warped, reflecting the moon in a distorted shimmer.
It didn’t look haunted. It looked like it remembered the old and the new.
And unfortunately for Y/N, she had to go inside it alone.
Behind her, her supernatural club members huddled dramatically near the car, whispering and filming like this was a low-budget documentary instead of a stupid bet gone wrong.
“Ten minutes,” her friend called. “Upstairs footage or it doesn’t count.”
“If I die, I’m haunting you hoes,” Y/N shot back, rolling her shoulders like she wasn’t aware of the way her stomach had tightened.
She wasn’t scared. She was curious. There was a difference, she hoped there was at least.
She stepped onto the porch. It groaned under her weight, a long wooden sigh that seemed to vibrate up through her sneakers and into her spine. The front door was slightly ajar.
That felt intentional, like it was inviting her inside. With a final look back at her friends who only nodded she sighed as she pushed the door fully open.
The sound dragged through the house like something being woken up.
Inside, the air was thick it felt unmoving. As if no breeze had touched it in years. Dust floated lazily in beams of moonlight that slipped through cracked curtains.
The floorboards were uneven, scuffed in places that suggested movement long after abandonment.
Her breath fogged faintly. It wasn’t that cold outside, so why was it freezing inside.
She flicked on her camera. Static.
Her phone buzzed weakly in her palm. 3%.
“That’s literally impossible,” she muttered, checking it again like the number might change.
Her EMF reader blinked once, twice and went black. Dead.
The silence deepened. Not the quiet of an empty house. The quiet of something listening.
Her pulse began to beat harder, almost panicked, but aware. It was a drum under her skin.
Only her flashlight remained functional, its beam slicing thinly through the dark. The light didn’t reach far. It felt swallowed by the walls.
She swallowed.
Fine. Upstairs. In and out. No burgers though
The staircase curved slightly at the top, disappearing into shadow.
Each step groaned beneath her weight, the wood protesting her presence like it hadn’t carried footsteps in a very long time.
Halfway up, she stopped. It wasn’t a sound that made her pause. It was the feeling growing in her stomach.
Like stepping into water too deep and realizing the bottom wasn’t where you expected it.
The air felt denser. Her chest tightened.
Don’t be dramatic. Grow some balls pussy, keep walking.
She kept climbing. At the top of the stairs, a narrow hallway stretched ahead.
Wallpaper peeled in strips, revealing older floral patterns beneath newer faded ones. Moonlight pooled at the far end.
One door stood closed. All the others were open. Her throat went dry.
“Hello?” she called, voice echoing more than it should have.
No answer. But something shifted. Not physically. But she felt it in the atmosphere.
She stepped toward the closed door, the beam of her flashlight trembling slightly despite her steady grip.
The handle was cold. Cold enough that her fingers ached.
She turned it and did a slight prayer.
The hinges creaked as the door opened slowly. Moonlight spilled across the floor.
And there he was kneeling. Still with a rabbit limp in his hands.
Blood trailed down his fingers in slow, deliberate drops that darkened the old wood beneath him.
The metallic scent hit her a second later. It was sharp, coppery, unmistakable.
He looked up. His eyes weren’t just red.
They were alive with it. A deep crimson that caught the light like burning embers beneath ash.
For a split second, neither of them dared to moved.
Her brain scrambled for logic.
Costume? Nah.
Special effects? Too realistic.
Human? the FUCK not.
Her scream tore through the room before she even registered it.
She spun, nearly slipping as she sprinted toward the stairs. She didn’t even make it.
FUCK
A hand wrapped around her wrist. It was freezing cold and strong beyond her comprehension.
Her body jerked backward so suddenly her breath left her in a sharp, startled gasp.
“Stop.”
His voice was calm despite the authority it held. It didn’t rise. It didn’t rush.
That terrified her more than if he’d shouted at her.
“Let me go—what the hell is wrong with you?!” she yelled, twisting in his grip, heart slamming against her ribs so hard she thought it might bruise.
He turned her to face him. Up close, he didn’t look monstrous.
He looked carved. Sharp cheekbones. Pale skin that didn’t reflect warmth. Lips faintly stained red.
And those eyes. They weren’t wild they were assessing her but God they were so mesmerizing.
Oh fuck off. why did he have to be gorgeous.
“What are you doing here?” he asked quietly.
“ME? this is abandoned ?! who the hell are you? pause. what fuck ARE you actually?!”
His gaze moved across her face slowly, like he was comparing it to something in memory. There was confusion there with a hint of disbelief.
His thumb lifted, brushing lightly beneath her eye.
The touch sent a strange current through her skin.
“Forget.”
The word wasn’t loud. It wasn’t commanding. It slid into her mind gently.
It felt like it was lulling her to sleep.
Her thoughts unraveled. The fear loosened. Darkness folded around her.
—
When she stepped back onto the porch minutes later, the night air felt too sharp.
Her friends rushed her. “Why did you scream?!”
Her mouth moved before her mind caught up.
“There was a dead raccoon upstairs.” The lie felt easy.
But as they drove away, she turned in her seat. And for a split second, in the upstairs window.
Red eyes burned through torn lace curtains. Watching.
And something deep in her chest tightened. Not in fear, but a bit of recognition.
—
So she did what any reasonable person would do, she went back the next night. And the next. And the next.
Each time telling herself it was curiosity. Closure. Science.
But each time she stood in that hallway, staring at that closed door, her pulse felt steadier.
Like she was approaching something inevitable.
The house was empty. No blood. No rabbit. No gorgeous bloodied man.
But the silence wasn’t hollow. It felt expectant, like it knew she was going to come back.
“You’re persistent.”
His voice came from behind her. Low. Smooth.
She didn’t scream this time. Her shoulders tensed, but she turned slowly.
He stood in the doorway as if he’d always been there. Shadows clung to him like they were his cape in the wind.
“You erased my memory,” she said immediately. “Why didn’t it work?”
His eyes darkened slightly.
“It did.”
“No, it didn’t.”
The air felt heavier between them now. Not threatening. It felt more charged.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
“Then make me leave.”
He stepped closer. The floor didn’t creak under him. He moved without sound.
“You don’t understand what I am.”
“Try me mister.”
He watched her carefully.
Long enough that she became aware of the way her breath hitched slightly in her chest.
“I’m a Vampire.”
“Okay? And?”
A pause.
“You’re not reacting properly.”
“What do you want me to do? Scream? Faint?”
His lips twitched. It was subtle. But it was there and she caught it.
And something in her chest fluttered unexpectedly. Knowing she broke his cold facade.
Not fear.
Something she couldn’t quite name.
—
Weeks passed in a blur of moonlight and questions.
She returned every night. Sometimes he was there immediately. Sometimes she waited.
The waiting felt strange, almost like anticipation instead of dread.
“You’ve lived how long?”
“Long enough.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“You ask too many questions.”
“You avoid too many.”
Their conversations stretched longer each night. He remained guarded. Distant.
But there were moments, brief, fragile cracks, where something softer flickered through.
He noticed things about her.
How she paced when thinking. How her eyebrows pulled together when frustrated. How she crossed her arms but never stepped back.
And sometimes, when she laughed too loud, something in his expression shifted.
Like memory brushing against present.
And then she found the painting. It hung in a room he rarely entered.
Preserved perfectly despite the dust coating everything else.
The woman in the portrait stood beside him. Her hand resting against his chest.
Eyes bright. Familiar. Too familiar in a way that made Y/N step closer. Her breath left her slowly.
“Wait, pause. That’s, that’s me.”
“No she was my wife. Ten thousand years ago.”
The words didn’t echo. They settled in her chest.
It felt heavy. Like someone was pushing down on her chest.
“That’s not real.”
“It is.”
The grief in his voice wasn’t fresh. It wasn’t dramatic. It felt ancient.
Like a social studies teacher talking about history, it felt layered.
Like sediment pressed deep over centuries.
Her chest tightened painfully. Because for the first time, she didn’t see a monster.
She saw someone who had waited too long.
And that terrified her.
So her feet moved before her mind could process anything.
And before she knew it she was unlocking the front door to her apartment.
She didn’t return to the house the following night. Not the next night. Not the next week.
But the house didn’t leave her. It followed her home. Not physically.
Not in some horror-movie-shadow-in-the-corner way.
It lived behind her eyes.
She would lie flat on her back in bed, staring at the ceiling where a thin crack split the plaster in a jagged line. During the day, it looked ordinary.
At night, when headlights from passing cars slid across it in brief streaks, the crack looked like a fault line.
Like something had once split and never healed properly. She tracked that crack every night. Back and forth. Back and forth.
Trying not to think. Trying very hard not to picture red eyes in moonlight.
Trying not to replay the sound of his voice when he said ten thousand years.
It’s not real, she told herself. Reincarnation is mythology. Memory is fragile. Trauma can make your brain invent things.
She rolled onto her side. Closed her eyes. And then it happened. Not a dream. Not fully.
More like some pressure. It was behind her ribs, it was a strong pull.
And suddenly the ceiling wasn’t there anymore. She was standing somewhere else.
The sky was wrong. Not black like night. Not blue like day. It was red.
Deep and endless, like a sun permanently caught at the edge of setting.
Wind pulled at fabric around her body, heavier fabric than anything she owned.
Long sleeves. Layers. The weight of something embroidered and ceremonial.
Her hands were different.
Rings on fingers she didn’t recognize.
Stone walls rose behind her. They looked beyond ancietn. And they were cold, like freezing cold.
And in front of her, Ryul. Just quite the same.
His hair longer and his clothing was much different.
It was darker, heavier, detailed with metal clasps and sharp lines. His posture straighter.
Older somehow, but not in age. In responsibility.
He was saying something. But she couldn’t hear it. The sound was muffled, like she was underwater.
And then she felt it, this strong pain. It wasn’t physical or anything.
But a sense of something ending. His hand in hers. Tight. Desperate.
The sky above them splitting with thunder.
And a light voice, too delicate to ever be his, began to whisper something about a bargain.
Her eyes snapped open. Her bedroom ceiling stared back at her.
The crack in the plaster looked the same as always.
But her chest—
Her chest felt hollow. She sat up abruptly.
Her room was quiet. Soft hum of the heater. A car passing distantly. Normal.
“I’m losing it,” she laughed to herself.
But when she lifted her hand. For half a second, she swore she could feel the phantom weight of rings that weren’t there.
The next night, she tried to stay awake.
If she didn’t sleep, she wouldn’t dream. If she didn’t dream, she wouldn’t see him in another lifetime.
But exhaustion won.
And the moment her body slipped into that in-between space—
The red sky returned. This time she was inside stone walls.
Candles lined a corridor. Real flame. No electricity. The air smelled like smoke and iron.
Footsteps echoed behind her.
She turned. It was him again.
But he wasn’t looking at her the way he did now.
There was no distance in his eyes. No coldness, there was a sense of devotion.
Familiarity.
He reached for her face and the vision fractured like glass.
She jolted awake, breath coming fast.
Her heart hammered violently in her chest. And that’s what scared her most.
Because for a split second, it didn’t feel like her heart.
It felt borrowed.
She pressed her palm against her sternum.
Counted. The rhythm was steady. Oh so very normal.
But something in her bones whispered that it hadn’t always been.
She swung her legs off the bed and walked to her mirror.
Her reflection stared back. Same eyes. Same birthmark at her collarbone. Same face.
But now when she looked at herself, she didn’t just see her.
She saw echoes. And she hated that.
“I’m not her,” she told the empty room.
But the room didn’t argue. The following days blurred. She went to school. Laughed with her club members. Pretended the house didn’t exist.
But every reflective surface made her pause a second too long.
Every red traffic light made her chest tighten. Every time she heard the word “forever,” something inside her recoiled.
And at night—
The sky behind her eyelids turned red again.
Not every time. But just enough to keep her unsettled.
Just enough to make the idea of him not feel imaginary.
And that’s what terrified her. Because if the visions were fake, she could dismiss them.
But if they were memory?
Then who was she? The girl in her bedroom?
Or the woman under a blood-red sky making a bargain she couldn’t remember?
And that’s when the cold shift in her room happened. The air pressure changed.
The rain tapped against her window. And she knew before she looked.
He was there.
The rain actually started before he appeared.
Softly at first, a thin tapping against her window. Then steadier. Rhythmic. Like fingers drumming against glass.
She was sitting on her bed again, staring at the ceiling crack that now felt like a map to somewhere she didn’t want to go.
The red-sky visions hadn’t stopped. They’d grown clearer.
Not full memories, just a few fragments.
The weight of fabric against her shoulders. The smell of stone after rain.
His hand, warm. So much warmer than it ever was now.
And that was the part that disturbed her most.
Because if she had imagined him entirely, why did her brain insist he had once been warm?
The air in her room shifted. Subtle.
Like someone had opened a freezer door in the hallway.
Her skin prickled. She didn’t turn immediately. She didn’t need to turn to feel him in the room.
“You can’t just—show up?!”
She whipped her head toward the desk.
He sat there like he had materialized out of the shadows themselves.
Back straight. Hands resting loosely on his knees.
Watching her the way he always did. He was observant, calculating, but tonight there was something else beneath it.
Uncertainty.
“You stopped coming.”
His voice sounded different in her room. Less echo. Less ancient. Less stable. More restrained.
“You think I wouldn’t need space after finding out I’m your ancient dead wife?!”
The words left her sharper than intended, but she didn’t take them back.
“You are not her.”
“Then why do I look exactly like her?!”
The rain intensified outside. The window rattled faintly in its frame. He didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he studied her.
Not the way he did in the house, that was detached, distant. This was closer. More searching.
He stood slowly. The movement was fluid.
Controlled. No wasted motion.
He took a step toward her. Then another.
Stopping just far enough that the air between them felt charged but not touching.
“I need to ask you something,” he said quietly.
Her arms crossed instinctively. She became defensive. But she held her ground.
“What.”
“Answer honestly.”
“I always do.”
His gaze flickered briefly to the birthmark at her collarbone. Then back to her eyes.
“Do you like jasmine tea?”
Her breath hitched.
The image came before she could stop it.
Them sitting on a stone balcony, steam rising from a delicate cup, wind brushing her hair back.
“Yes,” she said slowly.
His expression didn’t change. But something in his eyes sharpened.
“Do you prefer silver jewelry over gold?”
A memory of her fingers adjusting a silver ring engraved with intricate patterns.
“Yes.”
The word came easier this time.
“Do you wake before sunrise without meaning to?”
Her stomach dropped.
She had all week. At exactly the same time.
“Yes.”
The room felt smaller. The rain louder.
He stepped a fraction closer.
“Do you dislike roses?”
A flash of white flowers in her hand instead of red roses. Always white.
“Yes.”
Each answer felt like stepping further into something she didn’t want to accept.
His jaw tightened slightly. One more step.
“Do you like garlic bread?”
The question landed heavy.
She blinked.
“Man what?”
“Answer.”
The images stopped.
No stone walls. No balcony. No red sky.
Just her bedroom. Her bed. The faint glow of her digital clock.
“No?”
The word felt normal. She was entirely her. And that’s when something in him broke.
Not violently. A quiet relief.
It swept through his expression so quickly she almost missed it.
His shoulders lowered slightly.
His eyes, those red, unnatural mesmerizing eyes seemed to soften in a way she hadn’t seen before.
“It’s you,” he murmured.
“What does that even mean?” she demanded.
He closed the final distance between them.
Close enough that she could see the faint vein patterns beneath his pale skin.
Close enough that she could feel the unnatural coolness radiating from him.
“In her last life,” he said carefully, “you were half-breed. Born between worlds. You possessed weaknesses neither fully human nor fully vampire.”
Her pulse stuttered.
“In this life, you were meant to be born whole.”
Her throat felt tight.
“You said I’m not her.”
“You are not,” he replied. “You are the continuation. Not the copy.”
“That doesn’t make it better.”
He lifted his hand slowly giving her time to pull away.
She didn’t.
His fingers hovered near her collarbone.
“You were always meant to awaken.”
The word awaken echoed in her skull.
“Do you like garlic bread?” she repeated faintly.
A corner of his mouth twitched, almost imperceptibly.
“In your previous life, you loved it,” he said quietly. “It made you ill every time. You never cared.”
Her chest tightened painfully.
“And now?”
“Now you don’t.”
Something about that, something so small and human and ridiculous, shattered the fear into something more complex.
She wasn’t a replica. She wasn’t a ghost. She was different.
And he could see that. He disappeared.
The air snapped inward.
She stumbled back slightly at the sudden absence.
Seconds later, he returned with a glass in his hand.
Dark liquid. Something denser than water.
It clung to the sides of the glass as he moved.
“Drink.”
Her stomach flipped.
“Absolutely the fuck not.”
“You must.”
“Are you insane?”
“Trust me.”
Those words again.
Trust me.
And she realized something terrifying. She did trust him.
Her fingers brushed his as she took the glass.
The cold of his skin against hers felt less shocking now. The metallic scent hit her instantly.
Her instincts screamed no.
But something deeper leaned forward. She raised the glass to her lips.
The liquid touched her tongue. A warm copper-rich taste.
It burned as it slid down her throat. The world tilted violently. Her vision blurred at the edges.
The rain outside sounded like thunder in her skull.
Her knees buckled and a darkness swallowed her whole.
—
When she woke, the world was too sharp. Sound sliced through her.
She could hear individual raindrops sliding down the window.
The hum of electricity inside the walls.
Her own blood— No. Not blood? Something else.
She sat up slowly. Her skin felt tight. Cold from the inside out.
She swung her legs off the bed. Walked to the mirror.
And the absence hit harder than anything else.
No reflection.
Just empty space where she should have been. Her stomach dropped so violently she felt like she was falling.
“Ryul.”
He stood near the window. Watching her with dread in his eyes.
“You turned me.”
Her voice sounded steady.
But inside, everything felt fractured.
“No.”
“Then explain.”
“You were always meant to awaken. You were born vampire. The blood only triggered it.”
Her hands trembled as she pressed them against her chest.
No heartbeat. No rhythm. Just stillness.
“I didn’t choose this.”
“You did. Long ago.”
“I’m not her!”
The words cracked. Not angry but so terrified.
“I don’t remember loving you. I don’t remember dying. I don’t remember making deals.”
He stepped forward slowly. Each step careful.
“I know.”
“Do you love me? Or do you love who I used to be?”
The question felt like stepping off a cliff. His eyes didn’t waver.
“I loved her. I waited for you.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Silence. They felt the rain softened outside as the taps against the window began to fade.
“I am learning to love you.”
Present tense. Not memory. Not obligation.
Just now but that was worse.
Because it meant this wasn’t destiny pulling him forward.
It was a choice.
The first week after being “turned” was brutal.
Not physically. Emotionally.
He wouldn’t touch her. Not even accidentally.
Every lesson was delivered with space between them.
Measured. Controlled. Like she was something fragile and volatile at the same time.
“You need to learn restraint first,” he told her one night in the abandoned courtyard behind the house.
The moon hung low and cold. Too bright. It hurt her eyes now.
She could hear everything.
Crickets three streets away. A dog shifting in its sleep.
The faint pulse of blood in the veins of someone walking past the gate.
It was overwhelming.
“You’re clenching your jaw,” he said calmly.
“I can hear everything.”
“Focus on one thing.”
“That’s not how ears work.”
“It is now.”
She glared at him. He didn’t react.
He stepped behind her. Far enough to not be touching but just close enough that she could feel the chill of him at her back.
“Close your eyes.”
She hesitated.
“Trust me.”
She exhaled sharply but did it. The world grew louder in the dark.
Her breathing. The wind. Leaves scraping across stone.
“Find something steady,” he murmured near her ear.
His voice was low, careful, and steady.
She focused on it.
Not the wind. Not the crickets. His voice.
And slowly everything else around her began to dull.
When she opened her eyes, he was already two steps back again.
Always distance. Always restraint. And it started to hurt her more than she could word.
—
The hunger was worse. It came in waves. Not constant waves but sharp when it hit.
He refused to feed her directly. He brought sealed bags instead.
“Drink.”
She hated it. Hated the metallic taste. Hated the way he watched her like she might lose control.
“Stop looking at me like I’m going to snap.”
“I’m making sure you don’t.”
“You don’t trust me.”
His jaw tightened.
“I trust you.”
“That’s not what it feels like.”
Though he looked away first he felt the girls eyes on his head.
—
The breaking point came on the twelfth night.
She could hear a heartbeat too clearly. It was close, too close. She stepped toward the gate without thinking.
The scent hit her it felt warm, alive.
“Don’t.”
His voice cut through her mind like a blade.
She froze but her body trembled.
“I can handle it.”
“You cannot.”
“Stop treating me like I’m weak!”
Her eyes flashed red, bright, volatile. The hunger surged. Her control cracked.
And in less than a second, she was at the gate. Hands gripping iron. Breathing uneven.
The heartbeat on the other side sped up. Fear.
She swallowed hard. Her fangs ached. And then—
A pair of cold hands gripped her wrists.
Not violent but firm and grounding.
“Look at me.”
His voice was lower now.
Not commanding but almost pleading.
She turned and her eyes were bright crimson but his were darker, they began to anchor her.
“Breathe.”
“I don’t need to breathe,” she snapped.
“Then focus.”
Her hands shook in his grip. He didn’t let go.
“Listen to me,” he said softly. “You are not your hunger.”
Her chest tightened.
“You don’t know that.”
“I do.”
“You don’t know who I am.”
His grip loosened slightly but he didn’t step away this time.
“I am trying to.”
The confession slipped out raw. It felt unpolished.
And it stunned her more than the hunger.
Her red eyes that were once a bright red began to dim slightly.
“I’m not her,” she whispered.
“I know.”
“Then stop looking at me like you’re afraid I’ll disappear.”
That hit in his “heart”. Because he was and she saw it now.
Every time she faltered, he braced for loss. Like history was repeating.
His hands slowly dropped from her wrists. But neither of them moved apart.
“You almost died last time,” he said quietly.
“I don’t remember that.”
“I do.”
The weight in his voice wasn’t dramatic. It was exhausted.
Centuries heavy. Her hunger receded. Replaced with something worse. Understanding.
“You waited for me.”
“Yes.”
“And now you’re scared I won’t stay.”
Silence. That was answer enough. She stepped closer.
He stiffened instantly. Not rejecting her but restraining himself.
“Don’t,” he said under his breath.
“Why.”
“You’re unstable.”
“I’m not thinking about blood.”
That made his breath catch. She was so close now she could feel the cold radiating from him.
Could see the faint tremor in his fingers where he kept them rigid at his sides.
“Do you love me?” she asked again.
He didn’t answer this time.
“Not who I was,” she pressed.
“You.”
The word cracked slightly.
Like it cost him something.
Tears stung her eyes — ridiculous, because she didn’t need tears anymore. But they burned anyway.
“You’re learning to,” she whispered.
“Im trying to learn.”
That did it. Her hand rose slowly, giving him enough time to stop her.
He didn’t so when her fingers touched his cheek. It was like ice against ice. But somehow it still felt warm.
His eyes closed for a fraction of a second at the contact. Like he’d been denying himself this for weeks.
“Stop treating me like I’m going to break,” she said softly.
His hand lifted, hovering near near her waist.
“I don’t know how to hold you without losing you.”
Her chest shattered.
“You’re not losing me. You only lost her”
His hand finally settled at her waist carefully.
Like she was something sacred. The world felt suspended.
No crickets. No wind. Just the space between them tightening.
She leaned in first. Not rushed or desperate, but certain.
Their lips met softly. And it wasn’t fiery nor wild, but was trembling.
Years of waiting poured into something painfully gentle. His hand tightened slightly at her waist.
Like he was confirming she was real. She felt it all.
The restraint cracking. The centuries of discipline fraying. He deepened it slowly but carefully.
Like he was afraid she’d vanish if he moved too fast.
Her fingers slid into his hair.
And that’s when he broke. Not violently but emotionally.
The kiss turned desperate. Not hungry but afraid.
Like he was memorizing her. Like he needed proof she was here.
Her hands moved to his shoulders. Pulling him closer. And for the first time, he didn’t hold back.
His other hand rose to cradle her face. Cold thumb brushing beneath her eye.
“You’re here,” he breathed against her lips.
“It’s me, not her please remember that.”
The first day after their kiss she didn’t respond, he told himself she was resting and still processing everything.
The second day, he told himself she needed space.
By the third day, he couldn’t hear her heartbeat from across town anymore.
That’s when he knew. She wasn’t feeding. He’d left the sealed bags at her door.
They were all untouched. The metallic scent had faded from the hallway.
She thought if she ignored it, it would go away. Like cravings. Like grief. Like him. Like whatever fucked up joke this was.
It didn’t. Hunger doesn’t disappear. It ferments.
—
By the fourth night, the house was too quiet.
He stood outside her door. There was no movement. No pacing no music. Just pure silence.
He knocked once. No answer. He didn’t wait.
The door was locked. It didn’t matter. Wood splintered inward under his hand.
And the smell hit him first. The metallic smell of blood, it was thick and sharp so he knew it was fresh aIron.
The room looked like a storm had passed through it. Her dresser overturned. Drawers ripped out. Curtains half torn from the rod.
The lamp shattered against the wall.
Glass everywhere. And the mirror that was once her favorite thing was gone. It was destroyed.
Fragments glittered across the floor like ice. And in the middle of it she sat.
She was sitting against the wall beneath where the mirror had been.
Knees pulled to her chest. Hands red with streaks.
Like she’d tried to claw something out of herself.
Her hair was tangled. Her breathing uneven, even though she didn’t need to breathe she was forcing herself to try to breathe.
Tears slid down her face anyway. They looked wrong against skin that no longer needed saltwater grief.
He stepped forward slowly. Glass cracked beneath his boots.
Her head snapped up. Her eyes were glowing. They were no longer the controlled red he left her with a week ago.
They were wild and if anyone looked at her they’d think they were he prey.
He felt it instantly. She hadn’t fed in four days.
“You broke the mirror,” he said quietly.
Her laugh was brittle.
“I don’t have a reflection anyway.”
His jaw tightened. Her hands trembled harder.
“I can hear them,” she whispered.
“Who.”
“Everyone.” Her voice cracked.
“Every heartbeat. Every vein. It’s so loud.”
She pressed her bloody palms against her ears.
“It won’t stop.”
He moved closer. She flinched violently.
“Don’t.”
The word came out half snarl a half plea.
“I’m not going to hurt you.”
“That’s not what I’m scared of.”
Her fangs extended fully now. Not controlled and far from subtle. Her gaze flickered to his throat.
Just for a second.
And she recoiled from herself like she’d been burned.
“I can smell you,” she said, horrified. “It’s different.”
He didn’t react. Didn’t step back only moving closer.
“You’re starving.”
“I don’t want it.”
“You need it.”
“I don’t want to be this.”
Her nails dug into her own arms. Skin tearing slightly under pressure.
Her control was slipping. He could feel it in the air.
The way the shadows in the room bent toward her. The way the temperature dropped erratically.
“You think refusing it makes you human?” he asked softly.
Her eyes flashed toward him.
“I don’t want to crave people.”
“You don’t.”
“I do!”
Her voice shattered against the broken walls.
“I walked past a jogger yesterday and I imagined it, I imagined”
She choked on the rest.
He closed the distance carefully. Every step deliberate to keep her calm.
“You imagined losing control,” he said.
She shook her head violently.
“No. I imagined liking it.”
That silenced him. Her tears fell harder now.
“I don’t recognize myself.”
“You are dehydrated. Your mind is unstable.”
“Stop making it clinical.”
Glass shifted under her as she pushed herself up unsteadily.
She swayed yet he caught her automatically. She gasped at the contact. His hands were firm around her arms.
She tried to pull away. He wouldn’t let her.
“Let go.”
“No.”
“Ryul—”
“No.”
His voice wasn’t loud but it carried weight.
“You are not your worst thought.”
Her chest rose and fell unevenly.
“I wanted to bite someone.”
“You didn’t.”
“I wanted to.”
“That is not the same.”
Her eyes glistened she felt frantic, but more ashamed than ever.
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand more than you think.”
Her body trembled in his grip.
Her gaze drifted again to his throat.
He saw it. And this time, he didn’t pretend he didn’t.
“Look at me,” he said.
She resisted.
He gently tilted her chin upward.
“Look at me.”
Her glowing eyes met his.
“You are starving. Your instincts are screaming. That does not make you monstrous.”
She squeezed her eyes shut.
“I don’t trust myself.”
“I do.”
Her voice cracked again.
“Why.”
“Because you’re fighting.”
Her knees buckled. He pulled her against him before she hit the floor.
She collapsed into his chest.
And for a second, and for just that one one second. Her fangs grazed his collar.
He didn’t move. Didn’t shove her away. Didn’t tense just allowed her.
“You can,” he whispered near her hair.
Her whole body froze.
“I won’t stop you.”
Her breathing went ragged. His pulse was steady. He was offering and she felt it. The warmth of the permission.
Her mouth hovered near his throat. Her hands gripped his shirt tightly. Tears soaked into the fabric.
“I don’t want to hurt you.”
“You won’t.”
Her fangs pressed lightly against his skin. His hands tightened around her back. Not restraining just holding her still.
“You need strength,” he murmured.
Her control snapped. It as not outward but inward. She pulled back violently.
“No!” She shoved away from him, stumbling. “ I won’t take from you!”
Her voice cracked into something feral. He moved instantly. Faster than she could react. One hand braced the back of her head.
The other at her waist. He pulled her against him again. He felt firm.
“Enough.”
The word reverberated through the house.
“You are not alone in this.”
Her body shook. Her nails dug into his shoulders.
“I feel insane.”
“You are starving.”
“I hate it.”
“I know.”
Her forehead pressed against his chest. He could feel her unraveling.
“You should’ve told me,” he said quietly.
“I didn’t want you to look at me differently.”
His hand slid into her hair.
“You think I waited centuries to lose you to pride?”
Her grip tightened.
“I broke the mirror because I thought maybe I’d see something. Anything.” Her voice dissolved.
“There’s nothing.”
“There is.”
“Where.”
He pulled back just enough to look at her.
“In me.”
That did it. The last thread snapped. She sobbed, soundless but devastating. He held her tighter.
One hand cradling her head. The other steady at her back.
“You’re still you,” he whispered. “Hunger does not erase you.”
Her fangs slowly retracted. The glow in her eyes dimmed. The room stopped vibrating.
Her body sagged fully into him. She was exhausted and weak.
“I’m scared,” she admitted softly.
“I know.”
“I don’t want to become something I can’t control.”
“Then we train harder.”
“And if I fail?”
His grip tightened.
“You won’t.”
“How do you know.”
“Because even starving, you chose not to bite.”
Silence filled the ruined room.
Not tense.
Just heavy.
He brushed the dried blood from her knuckles gently.
“You will feed,” he said softly. “And you will hate it. And you will survive it.”
She let him guide her toward the door. Glass crunching behind them.
The broken mirror catching moonlight in shattered fragments.
And for the first time since she woke as this new thing, new person.
She didn’t feel like she was falling. She felt held.
But something in the air shifted. No. Someone else shifted the moment she felt alive.

It was Monday, the first day of the week and Leilani was not happy about it. She woke up 30 minutes before her alarm and could not go back to sleep.
After 10 minutes she decided to start getting ready. Going through her usual morning routine, just a little earlier than usual.
“Lei are you up baby,” she heard a soft voice call from behind her door.
“Yes mommy I’m up early” the girl smiled opening the door for her mom
Knowing she just got off work from her third shift job, Leilani could see the tiredness in her shoulders
“Do you want me to drop you off since it’s early? We could probably get you breakfast or something”
“Only if you aren’t sleepy, I know you just got off work”
“I’ll let you drive”
— 🍼
Now walking into school with her breakfast sandwich and a smooth energy drink she was in such a better mood.
“Is that our Lani?” she heard a voice call from further down
“it’s too damn early to be yelling in the hallways” the girl mumbled to herself
“Oh how we’ve missed you honey” Hyein smiled as Iroha and Woojin trailed behind the girl arguing.
“I missed yall too, what are they arguing about now” Leilani asked peering over Hyein’s shoulder
“Bro let me tell you- NO IM TELLING HER” Woojin said stepping in front of the girls
“What now son” leilani asked looking up towards the boy
“Martin scored first in every subject expect science. So you scored second in every subject except science” he mumbled reaching for the girls sandwich
The girl stood in thought for a minute before nodding her head and passing her sandwich over to the boy.
“Mm it’s whatever. I already knew anyways, aye that’s enough” she mumbled taking her sandwich back before he could take a third bite.
“Woah, is this character development?? what’s with this nonchalant ass reaction” Iroha mumbled putting her hand on Leilani’s forehead.
“Maybe she’s finally tired of fighting” Hyein smiled before she sighed, “YoungKeuKeu coming chat”
Leilani only sighed before she felt a tap on her shoulder knowing exactly who it was
“So how do you feel knowing I scored higher than you leilei?”
LeiLei. The name only Martin called her. It was like a silent agreement she was leilei and he was tintin. No one asked, but everyone knew.
“I don’t know TinTin, how was that science grade? you didn’t even score second this time” the girl said with a fake pout turning towards the boy
The boy only snickered at her comment and smiled looking down at the girl.
Despite how annoying she was to literally only him, he’d be a fool to say she wasn’t at least pretty.
The two continued to stare at each other before the bell rang.
“Alright you two let’s go to first hour” Juhoon mumbled as he began to walk next to Woojin.
This was their biggest problem. The friend groups overlapped. So they couldn’t even try to not be friends if they tried.
Hell they even sat next to each other in their first hour, child development.
— 🍼
“Well if it isn’t my favorite class” The teacher smiled walking into the class
The class only mumbled in response. If it one one thing? Mrs. Kim had all the energy in the world and it was only 8 in the morning.
“You know the only thing we can agree on is how loud she is in the morning” Martin mumbled into the girls ear
The girls breathe shifted at the unexpected moment taking a moment to look at the boy she only sighed.
“You’re right but would you get your hot ass breathe out my ear” the girl sighed turning back towards the front
He only elbowed her side in response and nodded. They both quickly began to drown out Mrs. Kim though until they both heard their names.
“Leilani and Martin, you’ll get baby 1”
“Juhoon and Iroha, baby 2”
“Woojin and Hyein, baby 3”
“pause. what the hell is she talking about” the boy asked the girl
“baby project. it’s literally written on the board moron.” leilani sighed as she went back to drawing i her notebook
— 🍼
“Okay now please come grab your babies” Mrs. Kim smiled as she began to explain further
“Go get it tintin, or should I say baby daddy?” the girl asked watching the boy freeze before turning red and going to grab the baby
“The baby will not be active until tonight. It’ll be on during school hours, and other teachers know so do not worry about having to leave early because of a baby crying.”
“I WILL know if you throw, kick, suffocate, or neglect the baby. Each time is a different amount of points taken off”
“Please name your babies, please get along with your co-parent partner and treat this like a real baby. The rest of class will be dedicated to you”
“So it’s just on how handle the baby?” Woojin asked the teacher in confusion
“Oh i’m sorry, the most important part is the baby book. You need documentations of everything. Pictures and little notes attached to them. That’s what this project is. it’s not just raising a robot baby, it’s raising a kid”
— 🍼
“I have practice today I cannot watch the baby” Martin said to the girl as he watched her dress the baby
“Mm I don’t care nor did I ask. what’re we naming my baby” she shrugged not even looking at the boy
“Kiyomi” the boy sighed pulling his phone out to take a picture of the girl
“Mm that’s cute, what time does practice start and end?” she asked smiling as she noticed the camera
“Umm. what? oh umm it starts at 4 and ends at like 8” he stuttered looking at the girl
“awwn you stuttering because of me?” the girl smiled as she stood up and began to gather her belongings
“As if uglahh” he laughed to himself only stopping when the girl gave him a straight face.
“Right anyways give me your number so I can contact you about my baby” the girl sighed putting her hand out to take his phone
“stop saying ‘my baby’ that’s OUR child” he mumbled giving the girl his phone

The girl had just been called into work last minute and needed to switch the baby off. He was done with practice so where the hell could he be.

“MARTIN” the girl yelled entering the house only to stop and take her shoes off
“Hello, Leilani. He’s upstairs baby?” Martin moms said pointing the girl towards the boys room
It was completely normal for the family. One day Leilani would just come in arguing with Martin or he’ll show up to Leilani’s house arguing.
Walking into Martins room without knocking and barging in she saw the boy with just his sweatpants on.
Looking the boy up and down before scoffing and setting the baby bag on his bed. Passing him the baby and turning on her heels to leave.
“Pause lei chill” he mumbled grabbing the girls arm causing her to look him up and down
“Next time answer the damn phone. i don’t care what you doing answer the phone when i got our child” the girl stated while crossing her arms looking up at the boy
“You don’t get to boss me around leilei, i was busy. i’ll let you boss me around when you score higher than me in anything but science” he smiled at the girl
“I don’t know why you’re so cocky. Science was always your thing when we were little. wait, no way you’re staring to fall behind?” the girl mocked with a slight smile
Watching the boys face instantly turned sour she knew there was nothing else to say.
“Now if you’ll leave me be. I have work so watch my daughter and I’ll take her during school after lunch” the girl said throwing a fake smile to the boy
Watching her leave and drive off through his window he couldn’t help but sigh.
“Your mom is lucky she’s pretty or else i’d actually strangle- whyre you crying now” martin asked the robotic baby as he began to dig through the bag for the diaper and bottles
Hearing his phone go off he sighed as he began to try to feed the baby and find where ever he put his phone.

Martin smiled knowing he was the knowing person who could get Leilani to act this way. He loved getting under her skin just to see her upset. He felt so accomplished.
