“ah, shihyun, we weren’t expecting you today.”
silas offers a smile to the caretaker of his grandmother, a woman he hired around the time of his grandfather’s death to keep her company in the absence of her husband. as badly as he wishes to be by her side day in and day out to take care of her and spend time with her in what could be her last years, his career and obligations unfortunately take precedence. mobius is understanding in letting him visit her when he so desires, but.. they also don’t want him slacking off on his responsibilities.
“i had some free time today, so i thought i’d come over. i apologize for not informing you in advance, yeseul. is this a good time, or should i come back another day?”
it’s been a while since he’s visited, and he tries his best to keep in contact with her to check up on his grandmother and speak with her when he can. it’s not often that he visits without scheduling beforehand, but for once he’s been given an entire week to have free time for himself and the first thing he thought to do was go see her. silas doesn’t plan on staying the entire week, but he’ll spend a few days with her at least.
“today is a good day, don’t worry. the doctor was by yesterday for his weekly visit, she’s pretty stable compared to last week..” she trails off, and silas recalls the troubled texts sent to him a handful of days before on her oxygen levels coming out lower than ever before and her worrying lack of energy. it was one of the rare times that brought silas to resent his busy schedules and never ending responsibilities. however, the resources that helped her become stabilized in the comfort of her own home were a result of his hard work and the money that comes from it, so he can’t stop now.
when he’s taken back through the home he grew up in to his grandmother’s room, he can’t find it in him to muster up a smile upon seeing her bedridden with oxygen tubes hooked over her ears. only her grin when she spots him brings his own, and he makes his way over to embrace her carefully and gently in concern for her current state.
silas takes a seat by her side, holds her hands and listens patiently as she tells him stories he’s heard over and over again. she asks about what he’s been doing these days, and he tells her of his recent schedules and how he truly feels about everything currently going on. she’s the only one he can really express his feelings towards, despite that he knows she won’t remember much of what he tells her. she still listens, takes it all in and looks at him with the gaze of a mother’s. she did raise him, after all.
she’s always been so proud of him, tells him every time he visits. tells him that even though his grandfather doesn’t support his career, she’s his first and biggest fan. she uses present tense when speaking of him, and his heart aches for her because he realizes today is one of the days she doesn’t remember his death. he wonders if she’ll remember tomorrow, or the next day. when she asks where he is, silas tells her that he’s just gone and won’t be home for a bit. she’s pleased with that answer, and goes back to the topic of his career.
“my shihyun,” she cradles his hands between her own, “your parents would be so proud of you now. i wish they could be here to see you today, they would be your biggest fans.”
it’s not the first time she’s said those exact words, and it won’t be the last. that doesn’t mean he’s immune to them, and his eyes sting with tears as he nods in response. he never responds, never speaks of his parents, doesn’t know if he can even do it. any time he tries, he opens his mouth for only silence to follow, and anyone but her has long since given up mentioning them to him.
