Is is one of those episodes that was so important to the show. Not because it was major plot device but because it was an episode that, for the most part, was random yet hit every viewer right in the heart.

This was one of the most brilliant episodes of DW ever in my opinion. Almost entirely dialogue based and shows how rapidly people want to throw someone out the airlock once they all decide he/she is the “problem” and they have to eliminate him/her to save themselves. Like a small scale view of how genocides begin. And the Doctor fights them at the lowest and the highest levels.

I remember when that song “Scott Pilgrim Ruined A Generation Of Women” and everyone got mad like “OMG! PUNK ISNT SEXIST! YOU TRIGGERED ME! THIS IS INCEL MUSIC!” Like yes. Yes, yes it is punk.

Punk is what society hates. Back in it’s hay day, it was anti-establishment, anti-capitalist, etc etc because that’s what society was and societal norms were AT THE TIME.

Fast forward to now and things like communism, feminism, BLM, GLBT, and everything else is mainstream. Society supports and pushes for these ideals and concepts more and more but there’s a problem. People still think this is punk.

Like I said, punk goes society and it’s norms and values, but societal norms change and when society began embracing these concepts and they became more popular with the masses then it’s no longer punk. You screaming about “PATRIARCHY IS AWFUL!”, “DOWN WITH CAPITALISM!”, “BLACK LIVES MATTER!” Isn’t rebellious. It’s the norm. It’s the establishment. You’re no longer on the outskirts of society sticking a middle finger to the man because the man is sponsoring you, the man is nodding his head with you, the man agrees with you. That’s not punk.

Scott Pilgrim Ruined a Generation of Women is punk. Many people called it offensive, sexist, incel, etc and yeah that’s the point. That’s the spirit of punk. It goes against societal norms and is supposed to offend the masses and make them angry. You being a feminist and getting mad at the song is the point. Punk can be sexist, racist, homophobic or whatever as long as that’s what society deems bad and wrong. You claiming to be a rebellious punk while also getting offended and screaming for the establishment or CEO of some social media company to get rid of him, well sorry to tell you this but YOU ARE THE ESTABLISHMENT!

Today’s punk is an empty shell what it used to be and the only thing that’s kept alive is the fashion which has even been watered down. If the news, social media, politicians, companies, and the masses agree with you, you’re not the revolution, YOU ARE THE ESTABLISHMENT!

@axelzp yeah, when it comes to scale it's a little hard to conceptualize so I hope you don't mind me getting a little woo about it.

I think big Force usage is precisely the reason Jedi put so much energy into thinking about how the galaxy works and their place in it.

So, ignorance itself isn't power; just because you think something is as light as a balloon doesn't mean that it is. But if you truly understand your place in the world, and the effects you can have, and the responsibility you bear...you can borrow the universe's cheat codes.

Enlightenment is power, but it's hard to come by because it requires letting go of your preconceptions about what's true and what you deserve and what you should be able to do. The Force is depicted as borderline sentient, and I think this is what Jedi mean when they start going on about listening to the Force. If you listen to the Force--if you surrender to it--if you accept that there's a greater power that you don't get to use by flexing hard enough--then it will help you. It will help you pick up that really big fucking thing.

Of course, the paradox here: the closer someone is to enlightenment, the less they're going to be inclined to throw big stuff around. Part of surrendering to the Force is accepting that you cannot control everything. That's why true massive Force use is so rare; it's not that it overloads your brain and makes your nose bleed, it's that it requires a knife's edge balance of caring enough to do something while accepting that you are not owed anything that's very fucking hard to achieve.

You might have noticed a key word there: balance. This is why balance is the watchword of the Jedi; it's not some 50% dark meter measurement nonsense, it's the paradox of being compassionate without losing yourself. Of trying to help without assuming that your way is best or that you have all the answers. Of emotion and peace; ignorance and knowledge.

And all this would fit with the things Ben tells Luke: "let go". "Trust the Force". It also fits with the MO of the Sith being trying to brute-force (heh) the Force under their control without trying to understand it or allow it to be a power higher than themselves.

Why is gatekeeping good?

Because something can’t ‘be for everyone’ and keep its identity.  If you appeal to everyone, you eventually appeal to none.

Gatekeeping keeps people who don’t want to adhere to the existing culture of whatever is being gatekept.  People should be expected to adopt the culture of whatever they’re joining to some degree.

Nobody actually believes gatekeeping is bad.  The people who decry gatekeeping absolutely gatekeep the fuck out of things they already enjoy.  Or worse, they’ll step into a space, then co-opt it and start gatekeeping the ‘old guard’ out of that space.  Which I call “Hobby Gentrification”.

These are the same people who will demand that toxic or bullying individuals be kept out of a hobby, failing to realize that people want to gatekeep them for the exact same reason.  Because they’re toxic to the hobby.

when we have someone legitimately asking if having a favorite color is a neurodivergent thing i think we need to address how we talk abt neurodivergence on this site skdnfsmdkms.

speaking from experience, and this is still a habit i have yet to rid myself of, constantly analyzing every aspect of your behavior for any signs of pathology(tm) is like...bad. breaking yourself down into little pieces and sorting them into diagnostic categories, when it comes to things that aren't impairing to you or harmful to anyone else is just not something i can see as good for your sense of self. for me and others i'm sure it likely arises from having identity issues due to trauma and therefore grasping onto anything that gives us a "place" and while that may be cathartic, i don't see it as something positive for overall personal growth.

like, there's a difference between identifying symptoms of a diagnosis you have in order to learn to manage them vs. associating harmless and relatively normal behavior with having a weird brain. aside from messing with your sense of self it also has people saying "oh i do [a behavior not even indicative with any conditon], does that mean i'm [x]?" which is misleading to people searching for answers and support about issues they're having and therefore would obstruct the "recovery" thing you guys keep talking about. come on now
