A new girl started at my job today and I was jamming out to WDBHG at my station when she walked up.

Her: “Sooo, You like 1D?”

Me: “yes girl! I LOVE them!”

Her: “So you’ve heard about the baby scandal then?”

Me: 😒 “it’s not true though, i’m fairly certain he’s g-”

Her: “GAY! I knew it! But, I thought 2 of them were gay, not just one?

me: “I have work to do right now. meet me in the walk in cooler in 2 hours. We’ll talk then.”

*2 hours later*

Me: “okay, spill.”

Her: Talking 90 MPH-“he’s so gay. My brother is gay and I asked him when realized that he liked boys. He said he always knew, but it really hit him when he fell in love with his best friend. Do you think that maybe that happened to Louis and Harry? Is that his name? The one with the awesome Mick Jagger vibe going on? Anyways, maybe they got too close and then their management made them stay separate because you know, they’re supposed to look straight because they’re in a boyband like what happened to lance bass you know? Then they had to do all this stupid shit like pretend Louis had a baby?”

Her: “Am I crazy? Maybe other people think that too?”

Me: “Welcome to hell, darling.”

I don’t want my kids growing up afraid to tell me things. You drank? Okay. You smoked? Okay. You’re struggling? That’s alright. I want them to be able to talk to me without feeling like they’re going to be punished, so they end up isolating and keeping things from me. Yesterday my mom posted a picture on Facebook of my 5 year old brother Sam wearing a pair of shoes he picked out for his first day of preschool. She explained to him in the store that they were really made for girls. Sam then told her that he didn’t care and that “ninjas can wear pink shoes too.” Sam went to preschool and got several compliments on his new shoes. Not one kid said anything negative toward him about it.

However, my mom received about 20 comments on the photo from various family members saying how “wrong” it is and how “things like this will affect him socially” and, put most eloquently by my great aunt, “that shit will turn him gay.”

My mom then deleted the photo and told Sam that he can wear whatever he wants to preschool, that it’s his decision. If he wants to wear pink shoes, he can wear pink shoes.

Sam then explained to her that he didn’t like them because they were pink, he liked them because they were “made out of zebras” and zebras are his favorite animal :)

What does it say about society when a group of adults could stand to take a lesson in humanity from a class of preschoolers?
