Fuck No Ableist Fandoms is going on hiatus

I've decided to put this blog on hiatus for a while for a number of reasons. For one thing, I don't feel I can give it the energy it deserves now; for another, I'm not sure I'm comfortable speaking about ableism that applies to disabilities I don't have.

If anyone wants to contact me about this the askbox will still be open; but I won't be publishing any messages or posting any content for a while.

I have a question. I roleplay as a character who canonically had an undiagnosed mental illness (depression and anxiety issues). Since he was a lesser-known character, his mental illnesses were never really explored or explained. I want to portray the character accurately, so I did a lot of research on various anxiety disorders and depression, and I'm tempted "diagnose" him so my rp partners can understand why he acts like he does. Is that ableist? Is even rping him at all ableist?

i don't think so. as long as you're being accurate and respectful i don't see the problem.

'a lot of the characters kick ass despite their disabilities' Um, wow, that's really insulting and demeaning. Screw you, anon. Re; Psychonauts, I'd say the 'poking around in someone’s mind without their consent' angle is a pretty damn important and disturbing one. It's one of the reason I have to be careful around sff fiction featuring neuroatypical characters, just in case the author decides to have the telepath/wizard/hacker/whatever sneak into their head and 'fix' them without their consent.

A while ago, there was a discussion on here about Percy Jackson and dyslexia + ADHD. I'm not into Percy Jackson, but my brother is, and he told me that Rick Riordan invented the character for his son, who was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. I'm not sure which side I'm on with this, but I wanted to out there how Percy Jackson was initially created.

I saw one about Sherlock describing him as "a human iPad, with a hint of Aspergers thrown in". I almost cried, Sherlock's a dick who makes a woman cry because he wanted her to speak quickly. I have aspergers. I would never do something like that.

people should never use "aspergers" as an insult, regardless of whether the character or person in question is autistic or not (and many people on the spectrum *do* see him that way including myself)

The Hannibal fandom is actually really, really good with mental illness? I've been in the Sherlock fandom and the way they treated sociopathy and similar illnesses really bugged the fuck out of me. The worst thing that I've seen in the Hannibal fandom is actually a quote from the show that's been put on some edits, but other than that, mental illness is typically treated with a lot of respect. [Did that make sense--]

I'm not really in it, but in the show itself mental illness is shown pretty accurately and most of the fandom seems to have taken the hint.

I'm sure in some rare fic will isn't portrayed in the right way or something. (I don't watch the show but a friend does and asked me about how she was characterizing since I guess he's autistic too??) But overall I think they're p good?

Have you seen any ableism and fetishization in the Hannibal fandom? I watch the show but never really got involved in the fandom so I'm not sure. I just hope it doesn't go in the same direction as the Sherlock fandom, you know?

I'm not actually part of the Hannibal fandom; i have seen some resistance to "going in the same direction as the Sherlock fandom" coming out of it but no fandom is perfect.

Hopping on "Psychonauts" bandwagon. I don't think the game is ableist. Quite the contrary: one of the morals of the game is that letting your mental problems control your life is unhealthy and can hurt you and people around you. Also the game's humor isn't built upon "lol crazies r funny", and a lot of the characters kick ass despite their disabilities. The prime example of this is Ford Cruller, who, despite being deemed useless by his colleagues after mental trauma, helps defeat the bad guy.

I'd like to interject that "not letting your mental problems control your life" *can* be a damaging and ableist message when it's applied to things people can't control. Humor isn't the only invalidating tactic out there.

But thanks for the input.
