Michael:Â Have you spent a lot of time thinking about the past? Hana:Â You mean, with you? Michael:Â No. No. I didnât mean with me. Hana:Â Before the trial I never thought about the past. I never had to. Michael:Â And now? What do you feel now? Hana:Â It doesnât matter what I feel. It doesnât matter what I think. The dead are still dead. Michael:Â I wasnât sure what youâd learned. Hana:Â I have learned, kid. Iâve learned to read.

Do you think that acting can fufill a higher purpose, and if so, what is that higher purpose for you?
Well, I would answer that by thinking of the performances Iâve seen given by other actors where I feel moved, and challenged and provoked by something in them that theyâve done â and it stayed with me. And I donât know concretely how itâs affected me in terms of itâs made me a better person, but I do feel that itâs possible to be changed by an actorâs performance. And by change I mean you go on and you take that with you, and it affects your response to things and your memory of things, how you engage with things.Â
There are people who say, âOh itâs just entertainmentâ, and you escape, and then you leave and you get back to your normal life. Well Iâve⊠I know Iâve been affected by and excited and inspired by the work of actors when theyâve shown me the full humanity of someone. I think, probably, itâs changed me and made me⊠I donât know, I couldnât say easily what itâs made me except that I like the fact that itâs changed me.Â
I just think film/theatre at its best, provokes. Provokes full emotions and change and catharsis. And if that can happen in us, and collectively, too, the collective spirit of the audience being changed by a performance is really powerful, and itâs something innate in us that we want in theatre and film, too. We want that change. [x]

Maurice Bendrix: Iâm jealous of this stocking. Sarah Miles: Why? Maurice Bendrix: Because it does what I canât. Kisses your whole leg. And Iâm jealous of this button. Sarah Miles: Poor, innocent button. Maurice Bendrix: Itâs not innocent at all. Itâs with you all day. Iâm not. Sarah Miles: I suppose youâre jealous of my shoes? Maurice Bendrix: Yes. Sarah Miles: Why? Maurice Bendrix: Because theyâll take you away from me.
