The Road Less Traveled

Deduction: John wanted sex and took a traditional approach to obtaining it.

Supplementary deduction: Possible additional need for more generalised physical affection.

Summary: To avert the potential crisis of John getting married, these additional requirements must be included in his relationship with me, thus making third party involvement unnecessary in John’s life.

Conclusion: I need to make John Watson fall in love with me.

This was one of the first Johnlock fics I read and I am in love with it! It definitely makes my Top 10 fanfic list for the perfect writing. The detail is fantastic and the romance scenes were some of the best I’ve read ( Seriously Chapter 8 isn’t even a sex scene and it was super hot). It should be read by mature readers only for the sex scenes.

This was the first ever review posted to this blog, so I’m very sorry that this is such an awful review of a great story! I’m a bit sad that I can’t remember many details to pull together a more detailed review but this will have to do for now.

In honor of Br0-harry and his wife verityburns I would like to pass this story, and it’s art, onto the new fans of Sherlock. For those of you who have joined the fandom more recently maybe you haven’t heard this story or of Br0-harry, but I hope you take the time to explore it now. During the early years of the Sherlock fandom this story was one of the most popular stories around. It was on the top of every fic rec list, and if you were new then, this was the story to read. It was one of my first fics, and it had a great deal to do with the creation of this blog. This story is also what brought Br0-harry and verityburns together, a combination of words and art that would blossom into a real life romance.

I never knew Harry or Verity personally, so I won’t even pretend to know what they would want us to do now. However I believe that in a time like this we should reflect and be grateful for every beautiful thing that the Sherlock fandom has brought into our lives. The friends we made, the art we drew, the fics we wrote. The love and creativity that came from a little BBC show, our lives forever changed by Sherlock Holmes and John Watson.

Rest in peace Harry, thank you for your contribution to this fandom. Tonight I will be reading The Road Less Traveled in memory of Harry, I hope you guys will do the same.

A Tribute to br0-Harry

As many of you may know, our beloved friend and fandom artist by the name of br0-Harry passed away late last year. Br0-Harry was such an inspiration for a lot of us in the Sherlock fandom from the very beginning, blessing us with his talent of art and sharing it and the world. His wife, Verity Burns, a beautifully talented writer in the fandom, recently wrote and posted about Harry’s passing, telling their story of how they fell in love through the Sherlock fandom, which can be read here: [link]

The Three Patch Podcast @threepatchpodcast and I wanted to show our support for all Harry has done for us, from bringing us together as a family to giving us happiness on our cloudy days, so we asked Verity if there were any charities we could donate to in memory of Harry. She decided on Macmillan Cancer Support, since they did so, so much for the both of them.

Sherlock Masturbates the night before John's wedding.

Now don’t get too excited, this may be about masturbation but you’re not going to feel much like masturbating after this one! This was good, I truly felt the shame and regret rolling off Sherlock here. It made sense that Sherlock would have a background where he felt sex and masturbation was a dirty, shameful thing. I think it fits in well with the shows characterization but doesn’t get tropey. I love love love the addition of Irene and Mary in this (no spoilers) which is a very rare thing to find in a Johnlock fic but fits Sherlock so well. Obviously this work is explicit, however I wouldn’t describe it as raunchy. If very intense sexual themes aren’t for you, you may still like this one. This isn’t a happy story, it’s pretty sad and lonely to be honest, but if you have a weak spot for pining Sherlock you’ll hate to love it.

A Vintage Exceptionally to Your Liking

Sherlock and John met seven years earlier than canon and fell in love. When John dies, Sherlock is introduced to the concept of alternate dimensions and given the opportunity to visit a different universe where he can have a second chance with a new John Watson. A love story across alternate dimensions.

Alternate dimensions! Always a fun AU, and this is no exception. I think this was a very well written story with interesting characterization but to be up front it ended up not exactly being my personal cup of tea. I want to put that out there before I get too far because I think the author wrote exactly the story they wanted to tell and many many many people will love it even though I’m not the biggest fan. 

One of the best things about this fic is characterization. I thought it was amazing, the way the different universes shaped the characters bring on subtle changes and shows you a Sherlock that never pretended he didn’t have a heart. It was great and anytime I thought something might be OOC it was justified within the narrative. I particularly loved the characterization after the season 3 timeline. It fit so well with the show’s canon while having excellent backstory to what was really going on! That was great.The story is interesting too, a lot of planning went into it and it paid off big time. There’s no clumsy reveals, all the big twists and turns were always a part of the story. However for me, the story got a little too fanciful particularly when we get to Mary’s story line. It wasn’t for me. I want to stress that this is personal opinion though, it’s nothing wrong with the writing. Constructive criticism wise though, I think the very end tail of the story wasn’t as nicely paced as the rest. A bit awkward and rushed, so much happened in such a short time I didn’t have much time to adjust to the major game changers happening. Overall all though I’m impressed with the amount of planning that went into this story and I think it was a very good fic that a ton of you will love.

Breakable

After John is seriously injured, Sherlock struggles to figure out how to help him, keep himself sane, and maybe, just maybe, get their life back to the way it's supposed to be.

A minute later and John was asleep again. Sherlock wanted to wake him up and grab him by the shoulders and shake him and demand that he try to wiggle his toes, kick his legs, stand up and walk. He wanted to weave his hands into John's hair and kiss him until they both couldn't breathe. He wanted to crawl into bed next to him and cry himself to sleep. Instead he just settled back into the moulded plastic chair, leaving his fingers wrapped in John's, waiting, waiting.

Well, hello! It’s a bit awkward trying to remember how to write a review!First off let me say that this fic is perfect for people like me, people who were strong into fandom pre-season 3 and have now fallen away from the Sherlock fandom. This fic is reminiscent of fanfics published before the airing of season 2. Back when Moriarty and Mary weren’t huge plot devices that had to be worked in. In fact this story makes no mention of Moriarty or Mary even existing! Unless I missed an author’s note my interpretation is basically that nothing past The Blind Banker happened in this story. So if you’re looking for a Johnlock fix without drama this is the one for you! Now, on to the story!

In this fic, John has been paralyzed. If you are uncomfortable with hospitalization, rehab, depression,  and other injury related topics maybe it’s best to skip this one. I however find these types of stories fascinating, and this was an excellent read! I felt John’s injury and the boy’s reaction to it believable and in character. There are of course very out of character moments but they are intentional and part of the story. Our boys are very romantic and sweet to each other, which I personally wasn’t feeling at first but grew to love and respect this characterization when I realized that the canon completely veered from what I was used to. If the characterization and plot hadn’t been this excellent I wouldn’t be writing up a review for it now. It was pretty damn good. Personally, I feel the story could have used more nitty gritty (to the point of embarrassing) descriptions of John’s recovery. More description on the messy side of hygiene, sex, and using the bathroom would have helped to add some gravity to the situation and make the reader feel the shame John was feeling. There are descriptions but getting even more graphic (medically) I personally would have liked better. The only true negative of this fic was the removal of Molly! Where is she? I miss her! I would have loved to have her in this but I’ll get over it.

 Overall  I thought this was an excellently written fic in both characterization and plot. A great welcome back to fanfiction. I want to reiterate what I believe is this fics greatest asset, this fic deviates completely from the canon after TBB. If you’re unsure about how this author handles Sherlock’s return or Mary or some other aspect of the show where people disagree on, don’t worry about it! It’s not relevant here. I should point out that this was at least partly written after season 3 aired so you will get a canon supported Mummy and Dad Holmes and various other canon additions. So canon without canon problems? Yay! I’m honestly happy I read this and I’m actually going to go read some more fanfic now because this was such a positive experience.

The Three Laws of Fandom

If you wish to take part in any fandom, you need to accept and respect these three laws.

If you aren’t able to do that, then you need to realise that your actions are making fandom unsafe for creators. That you are stifling creativity.

Like vaccination, fandom only works if everyone respects these rules. Creators need to be free to make their fanart, fanfics and all other content without fear of being harassed or concern-trolled for their creative choices, no matter whether you happen to like that content or not.

The First Law of Fandom

Don’t Like; Don’t Read (DL;DR)

It is up to you what you see online. It is not anyone else’s place to tell you what you should or should not consume in terms of content; it is not up to anyone else to police the internet so that you do not see things you do not like. At the same time, it is not up to YOU to police fandom to protect yourself or anyone else, real or hypothetical.

There are tools out there to help protect you if you have triggers or squicks. Learn to use them, and to take care of your own mental health. If you are consuming fan-made content and you find that you are disliking it - STOP.

The Second Law of Fandom

Your Kink Is Not My Kink (YKINMK)

Simply put, this means that everyone likes different things. It’s not up to you to determine what creators are allowed to create. It’s not up to you to police fandom. 

If you don’t like something, you can post meta about it or create contrarian content yourself, seek to convert other fans to your way of thinking.  

But you have no right to say to any creator “I do not like this, therefore you should not create it. Nobody should like this. It should not exist.”

It’s not up to you to decide what other people are allowed to like or not like, to create or not to create. That’s censorship. Don’t do it.

The Third Law of Fandom

Ship And Let Ship (SALS)

Much (though not all) fandom is about shipping. There are as many possible ships as there are fans, maybe more. You may have an OTP (One True Pairing), you may have a NOTP, that pairing that makes you want to barf at the very thought of its existence.

It’s not up to you to police ships or to determine what other people are allowed to ship. Just because you find that one particular ship problematic or disgusting, does not mean that other people are not allowed to explore its possibilities in their fanworks.

You are free to create contrarian content, to write meta about why a particular ship is repulsive, to discuss it endlessly on your private blog with like-minded persons.

It is not appropriate to harass creators about their ships, it is not appropriate to demand they do not create any more fanworks about those ships, or that they create fanwork only in a manner that you deem appropriate.

These three laws add up to the following:

You are not paying for fanworks content, and you have no rights to it other than to choose to consume it, or not consume it. If you do choose to consume it, do not then attack the creator if it wasn’t to your taste. That’s the height of bad manners.

Be courteous in fandom. It makes the whole experience better for all of us.

We always talk about the downside of [fandom] because that’s the more colourful thing to talk about. There are many more fans out there whose response to wishing for creative control is to make up their own stories. And to make up their own ideas, and to make beautiful drawings, and scripts of their own. There is the slash fiction - and why not? What’s wrong with porn? It’s made many people in this room happy; it’s a vessel of human happiness, why should we object to it? It’s a creative response to something! That’s brilliant and wonderful and heartening and exciting when that happens. Because that’s how people start being writers. It is. You start being a writer by imitating other writers. Mark and I never stopped!…That is a hugely positive thing and yes, of course, somewhere in amongst that there is the clinically insane, but we can’t allow that to dominate the conversation.

Nineteen Seconds of Falling

Sherlock spends exactly nineteen seconds zoned out after John asks him to be best man. He retreats to his mind palace in the desperate hope of figuring out what he wants, unfortunately for him his mind palace is full of people who keep trying to give him advice.

I haven't read fanfic in a very long time (as our lack of updates suggests) but a link to this was on my dash and I thought 'what the hell', expecting to close out of it right away (no offense, that's just my relationship with fanfic these days) and it's honestly really good. Like because of this I might actually start to read fic again, I know I'll check out this author's other works. The characterization, pacing, and expressions are spot on. It's engaging and humorous, but pulls on your heart strings as well. This story exists only in Sherlock's mind palace, and it's amazing how the different elements from the show and the author combined. This is exactly how I want Sherlock's mind palace to be, especially with the memories. Honestly well done, this is a great fic for people who love unrequited love fics and pining Sherlock!

An Acquired Taste

When an injury forces adventure and travel photographer John Watson to take more sedate jobs, he worries he might be bored - until he meets Chef Sherlock Holmes.

Shoy's posting a review? And it's for an AU that doesn't have to do with vampires or werewolves or wings? WHAT?! Okay, all joking aside, I finally remembered that I used to REVIEW fics instead of just read them, and I thought I'd share one I just finished.

This is a lovely romp into an AU I would love to read more of. Both Sherlock and John seem to be spot-on in their new roles, and I really appreciate that the author let the world slowly build as their relationship did. I can totally picture Sherlock as an amazing chef, and his explanation for how he got into the food business felt perfectly in-character for me. John as a travel photographer was a little harder to grasp, but it didn't take me out of the story by any means. I was almost disappointed when I reached the end, because I wanted to read more about the food and the photography and, of course, the budding romance... This fic has definitely (if you'll pardon the pun) left me hungry for more.
