VIDEO #22: EMPIRES
Side A
We met with Chicago four piece Empires when they passed through the city on their tour late last fall. We had not completely decided on a filming location and when we called the called the guys to see where they were, they appeared from a white van parked on the street and began to haul their equipment onto the Lower East Side sidewalk.
With their equipment set out in front of their venue, Pianos, vocalist Sean Van Vleet sat down to perform a beautiful rendition of ‘Spit The Dark’ and it seemed our location was decided. We then moved on to film two more songs in the empty back room, where the guys would be playing that very evening.
We loved these guys so much we waited for the show which did not disappoint. Thank you to Pianos, our favorite bar in the Lower East Side and thank you to Empires for a fantastic Secret Sound Shop video #22.
MAX STEGER of EMPIRES, on
How and why independent musicians are utilizing the internet
So, last semester I was writing on the above topic (which I chose because of my interest in the shift towards DIY on the internet instead of the traditional Recording Company route, and also because of my interest in Empires)
My professor claimed no one in the class could land a primary source.
Challenge Accepted
Stephanie, Rebekah and I were going up to see the Empires in Baltimore the last week in October.
Before hand I shot them an email about the possibility of meeting them before the show and getting some input from them.
Tom responded with an affirmative, but due to timing constraints he volunteered Max instead.
The wise panda speaks.
(I also interview Sean and talked to Tom briefly on the subject, but sadly neither of those were recorded.)
Note: This is only an informal interview regarding Max’s thoughts on the subject. It was recorded by Stephanie in the Golden West Cafe where they were preforming, thus there is a level of background noise courtesy of the opening band.
ENJOY!
~8 minutes long
(…also regardless of what he says at the end, I have a very hard time believing he was drunk~)

Empires, Live at the Alley video.
Fast forward to about 14:45 to get to the Empires portion of the episode!
