I love how Obra Dinn tells you so little of what went on during the trip. You're only privy to the moments someone died and most of those moments display the crew at their best or at their worst. We rarely get to see what anyone is like when life is normal so we can never know for sure who most of them truly were.

Take Leonid Volkov as an example.

The first few times we see him, he's one of the miscellaneous crew members fighting the kraken.

But the first and only time he ever has any prominence is when he murdered Paul Moss and was killed when he tried to attack the group leaving in the last life boat. He shouted that he wasn't going to let them escape in the last life boat when he attacked.

So we know he attacked them because they were trying to escape, but we don't actually know why. We don't know what he was doing prior to the boat casting off. Was he planning to steal the boat for himself? Was he trying to punish deserters after there had been two previous desertions? If he wanted the boat, was he stealing it for himself or was he working with Olus?

Also, he's one of the crewmen not shown doing anything when they get invaded by attackers. He was helping the other topmen lower the sails when the attack started, but most of them got involved in the fight. Did Volkov hide from the fighting? Was he involved but never somewhere someone died? Was he part of the last line of defense alongside Maba and Booth?

And finally, why was he not part of Nichols's conspiracy. Nikishin and Toporov were part of it and they hung out with Volkov in all the casual scenes we could get. Did they only hang around because they spoke Russian? Were the three of them friends before the trip or was this their first meeting? Was Volkov their employer and if so, was he stealing their wages? Was Volkov part of Nichols's plot and got left behind? Was Volkov an honest man and Nichols did not approach him because of that? Did Nikishin and Toporov join Nichols's conspiracy because Volkov wasn't paying them?

We can't ever know the answers to any of these because all we ever got to see of Volkov was what he was like when he was fighting for his life and desperate.

I like to think Nichols approached either Nikishin or Toporov and they told the other about it, and both agreed to leave Volkov out cause they're still salty that he cheated in poker
