Analysis of how real it was, headcanon to where the relationship is headed

Getting the obvious out of the way: Even though he’s glad to be out of being blackmailed and is thrilled to succeed against someone so powerful…. He enjoys the game of cat and mouse. That’s why he apologized to Evil Morty, Morty wasn’t supposed to actually interfere with the relationship of cat and mouse. Rick’s not apologetic for winning because that’s part of the game. He’s essentially telling Evil Morty, “I had to get the cops involved because Morty wasn’t supposed to catch us. I had to pretend I fully wanted you gone, and we had to end our affair. I love him, yes. But I reciprocate your feelings too, even though I broke it off”

BUT: He’s not more upset because, not only was it exhilarating to win, he knows in his heart Evil Morty will begin plotting and will return to him.

“I destroyed your shit and dumped you so you’d come after me. All so my Morty thinks we’re officially ended. That way we can continue our relationship in better-concealed secret. Please understand I didn’t actually break up with you. It’s just another Heist Episode.” And Evil Morty for once is too emotional to register it…. Until maybe, that last expression he gave us in jail…. 👀

What I think is, Rick did all the above unconsciously. He’s not in touch with his feelings, but he definitely acts wild with them, so his improvisational instinct took care of everything while he isn’t even fully aware of said feelings shared until the end. That’s why he was so satisfied when Morty loudly announced the interest Evil Morty had for Rick. Because Morty just revealed something Rick was only unconsciously aware of. “Wait that’s right! You had the same feelings I did!” Morty essentially and accidentally forced both of them to confess to one another, with Rick confessing at the end by apologizing and immediately gloating.

I think after Morty figured things out and after evil Morty’s emotional cooldown in prison… Evil Morty will realize… the game of cat and mouse will be so much more thrilling knowing Morty is now aware enough of the situations to complicate things further. He LOVES that feeling of being a Morty that a Rick not only respects, but DESPERATELY wants. ‘Evil Morty craves the drama of being the one Rick secretly wants but isn't allowed to have!’ Now with the time cops as another variable, the game gets all the more fun.
