as a teen, i was constantly harassed by adults enforcing ''dress codes'' on me. I very much experienced this as sexual harassment. I think this is one of many cases where people would more easily understand this as sexual harassment if I described it as if it happened to an adult.
imagine being on your lunch break, and your supervisor comes over to your table, tells you to stand up in front of everyone. they draw everyone's attention to your thighs. they tell you that you have broken the dress code because of the length of your shorts. they tell you to go change (so you do not get the rest of your lunch break). they do this every single day at lunch. every day. so you read the whole dress code front and back, and you choose your clothing carefully to not break it. you bring a cloth tape measure with you to work because they will not believe you. this time when your supervisor tells you that you're breaking dress code, you pull out your tape measure and show that you are within the limit. your supervisor says "I bet you wouldn't want me to bring you to the boss and let him measure it, would you?" it's clearly a threat: if you don't obey then you will be put alone in a room with your boss and he will touch your thighs. you don't know how to respond. you're taken out of lunch again.
this was my experience at school. replace supervisor with "teacher" and boss with "principal." this was sexual harassment. fuck dress codes.
UK petition: Maximum working temperature
UK work guidance has a minimum safe temperature for employees at work, but not a maximum one.

It's quick and easy and could save a life. My office reached 31 Celsius today. It was not the hottest office in the building. We do not have any fans for electrical safety reasons. There was an emergency ice pops run at lunch, which sounds funny but we were genuinely concerned our pregnant colleague was approaching heatstroke and the official guidance is to 'open a window'. Heat kills! Outdoor and manual jobs have it even worse right now too. I know I'm lucky to be able to be sitting down with free access to water during this!
nothing better than watching severe thunderstorms roll in after a killer heatwave

Why is it that every time I google something like "Are olives poisonous to cats" the top results are always like "Fun fact: Cats are carnivores! This means that they eat meat. There is no reason to include olives in a cat's diet. You should feed your cat cat food, which is dry or wet food especially designed for cats. You can purchase this at a store." like is there a single person alive on the planet who's googled "Are blueberry muffins safe for cats" because they're planning on switching their cat to a muffin-only diet??? No, I'm asking because the little bastard somehow popped open the packet while I was putting away the groceries and dragged one under the couch before I could react and now I need to know if I should call the after-hours vet. "Cats should not eat spaghetti." NO SHIT, SHERLOCK!!!! "Try to keep human food away from cats." i live in a studio apartment with a completely silent and permanently hungry apex predator who has the intelligence of a toddler and the desperate Machiavellian cunning of a creature who spent his formative months on the streets. He can already open doors and he is this 👌 close to learning how to open the microwave. He is stronger than me and covered in knives. So im gonna do my best but for the moment i just need you to tell me whether this yoghurt is going to kill my son y/n
I've been using the pet poison hotline's poison list cause it has a search function. It also tells you whether something is mildly, moderately, or severely toxic which can be very handy! It doesn't contain like everything but it might be a good place to start, it also includes plants for fellow houseplant lovers <3

I am sooooo tired of shit like this
Recently in France there was a huge buffet gathering up farmers and the main course was pork, and many people there were like "That's the soul of our country, muslims are trying to stop us from eating it but we will not give in!!" even reporters repeated that kind of discourse, how it's becoming so hard in France to consume pork and non-halal food. And as someone who grew up muslim and lives in a muslim family, what the hell are they all on about ???
When someone serve pork, we don't eat it. That's all. That's that simple. We don't insist that colleagues aren't allowed to bring pork, we simply eat whatever is safe for us and don't throw a tantrul over it. I work in a school and sometimes there's pork at lunch. Muslims kids get serve fish instead. They complain a bit cause they don't like it but they eat it. No parent write a letter to the school to complain about lunch, because they know they cannot dictate what other people eat.
Racists are making up problems that no one ever thought about. I used to walk in a supermarket and complain in my head that they should put something else than ham sandwiches, but it never crossed my mind to harass a worker over it. I don't know anyone who did. So what the hell are right-wing people talking about ??? "What would you do if your muslim neighbors-" NOTHING BECAUSE THEY WOULDN'T. NOT NOW NOT EVER. NO ONE CARES. EAT YOUR PORK.
This is Islamophobia
Saw the news about Venezuela. Two back to back earthquakes, that's terrifying.
Powerful earthquakes struck western Venezuela, killing at least 32 people, injuring over 700, and prompting the government to declare a stat
my mom just read a book where the author did not have the faintest idea how Appalachian dialect worked. She kept having the characters say "y'all" to refer to one person. How do you fuck it up that bad.
@reminiscentrevelry So I asked my mom about the book, and it did in fact take place in south-central Virginia.
So that's a mystery solved. I retract my criticism
Huh. This has always bothered me when media gets it "wrong" by having someone use y'all to refer to one person, as I had never encountered anyone do that in real life. Interesting to know there is a region where they do.
science has always been political. what gets studied. what doesnt. who gets to do the studying. on and on and on.
scientists on this post: yuuuup 👍
people who aren't scientists: um actually ☝️
I left research science for a multitude of personal reasons but a big one was that my autistic arse just could not keep up with the politics. Trying to increase your profile and your work's appeal for grant money (both critically important factors for succeeding in science) by carefully tailoring your work focus, grant proposals and papers to attract the interest of various grant committees focused on what research is in fashion and also to try to maximise the number of references to your papers in other people's papers takes so much time and just isn't interesting.
People in the notes are all like "yes sometimes The Government or The Lobbyists remove funding from sciences that might reveal things that they do not want known" and yes yes covid and climate change and vaccine denialism and racism and all that, but it's not just the obvious stuff. When I was working in labs, metagenomics was the next big thing, so EVERYTHING was metagenomics. If you worked in environmental or medical microbio, there was an 80% chance that you were taking some mud or poop or something and doing metagenomics on it whether or not it was the best way to analyse what you wanted to analyse, and bam, that was a paper, possibly two, it kept the lights on. And if 100 labs run 100 experiments where they do metagenomics for random things to do with the human body, then at a 95% confidence interval, 5 of them will find a completely nonexistent correlation for any random thing you can think of if they happen to check their data for it, and they need to keep the lights on and the PhD student who's running the experiment needs a paper so even though that wasn't what they were looking for, bam -- everyone's seeing that men and women have different microbiomes in their large intestine! People with autism nave different microbiomes, people with MS have different microbiomes, kids who are vaccinated have different microbiomes so watch out! And there's not enough papers to do a review paper for six or seven years, and when that review paper is done only other scientists will read it, because Everyone Knows that vaccines alter your microbiome so stay away from them, and Everyone Knows that men and women are so so different because why else would their large intestines be so different? Look at this paper!
And the psych guys are doing MRIs because that's the Next Big Thing, and any bias culturally relevant enough will get positive papers for it because the 100 labs will check their 100 papers and the 95 that show no difference at 95% confidence are of course never published because there's nothing to say. And the medicine guys are running ten thousand seaweed extract experiments to kill cancer cells, and their confidence intervals do tend to be better, but there is no defense against an industry where the only way to survive is to publish and the only way to get funding is to look into something that the grant committee wants you to find something interesting about, and you'd better find that something interesting even if you kind of have to publish your study before repeating it to check for that confidence interval -- someone else will repeat it, or you will once the paper's out, but you've got to get the paper out. And that paper had better be useful for other scientists to reference, even if you have to change the tone and the implications and choose which results are worth referencing, because getting more references is how you keep your job and how you convince the next grant committee.
Big Bad Government Lies About Covid is a problem, but it's not the problem. A perfect government with a massive science budget does not solve the problem. The system of research is inherently political because it is inherently competitive and because it deals with numbers and statistics that are not intuitive to humans.
#fuck capitalism
Nono this problem also exists outside of capitalism. Any economic system has to distribute resources and any actually useful one has to care if its workers are actually producing something.
when (some orb-weaver?) spiders are hungrier they build/adjust their webs so the strands are more taut, meaning the web is more sensitive, and smaller prey than normal will make it vibrate (every bite counts when you're starving!). but ALSO: if you station a well-fed spider on a web that was built by an extremely hungry spider, that spider will go capture the kinds of tiny bugs that the looser web it would have built itself wouldn't have alerted it to. they outsource the decision-making for which prey to go after to their web! they just adjust the settings til they seem about right for the moment and then go along with whatever the web picks up. "the spider will eat whatever it's aware of, and it sets the bounds of its awareness by spinning different kinds of webs." that's so cool....

Since Canada is currently trying to sell itself as an "ethical alternative" to Iran's oil, I would just like to remind folks / share some quick information:
More than 50% of Indigenous communities in reserve areas in Canada are at high risk of pipeline spills. When there is a spill, reserves are disproportionately impacted.
The National Energy Board and Supreme Court of Canada has a history of declaring the "public interest and economic interests outweigh Indigenous and treaty rights." Basically, Indigenous peoples don't count enough as "public" to matter.
Pipelines are built without proper consent from the Indigenous Nations they choose to occupy. Keep in mind I say choose, because this is the case even when alternative pipeline routes are suggested that could avoid reserve land. This is a direct, constant, and often violent threat to Indigenous sovereignty.
The MMIW crisis is funded by the oil industry through the creation of worker's "man camps" near reserve land. These "man camps" are nothing but pits of sexual violence and human trafficking of Indigenous women and girls. I am not exaggerating; this is well studied and well documented.

Oklahoma (my home state) fully banned gender affirming care for EVERYONE regardless of age (Image below, please read it)
I'd be really happy if people shared this post around because I am sick and tired of nobody talking about this, y'all remember those anti trans laws that passed in Florida?
Those originated in Oklahoma.
My state banned gender affirming healthcare for anyone under 25 before Florida did and guess which one got widespread discussion and which one got completely ignored?
It especially hurts given all the violently racist and anti indigenous shit my state's governor has said over the years that has gone completely under the radar in wider online leftist circles.
Please, if you actually give a shit about trans people in the south (especially indigenous people here) share this around so people can actually pay attention to what happens here.
Some opponents say the law’s quick turnaround and vague language may have led to overcompliance and confusion among patients and providers.
Senate Bill 904 was one of several measures introduced this session focusing on restricting gender-affirming care. It prevents the state Medicaid program, or SoonerCare, from covering it, and bars public funds from being used to provide or subsidize it. State property, facilities and buildings also can’t be used to deliver this care. [...] SB 904 was filed during last year’s legislative session as a measure establishing criteria for incentive payments to contracted Medicaid long-term care providers. Sen. Todd Gollihare, R-Kellyville, submitted an amendment in March to replace the language with his bill on gender-affirming care. Affected services include surgical procedures to alter or remove physical or anatomical characteristics “that are typical for the individual’s biological sex” and drugs used to suppress or delay puberty, or to promote the development of feminizing or masculinizing features “consistent with the opposite biological sex.” Exclusions apply to things like behavioral health services and depression or anxiety medications, and individuals with differences in sex development[*]. People who violate the law can be charged with a misdemeanor. [...] That impact is being felt in the limited spaces statewide that offer gender-affirming care. Lily Pina is the family nurse practitioner at the Oklahomans for Equality Health Clinic. The clinic is one of the newer arms of the nonprofit organization, which has served the LGBTQ+ community since the 80s. It offers several services, including gender-affirming hormone therapy. The clinic is fully credentialed with Blue Cross Blue Shield, and its lab is credentialed with all insurances. It also accepts self-pay patients. But Medicaid is no longer an option. LGBTQ+ adults are twice as likely as non-LGBTQ+ adults to rely on Medicaid as their primary health insurance source. “We've definitely had an influx of patients needing to transfer their care because their current provider couldn't continue to provide their transgender services,” Pina said June 3. “So, as of right now, we're booked out for the next five weeks.” Hailey Briggs, the executive director of Oklahomans for Equality, added that OU was quick to reach out the day after the legislation passed to ensure its patients could continue to access care. Briggs said the “intentionally vague” language has left a lot up to interpretation for providers. “There are a lot of medical institutions that are publicly funded in some way, and so how those institutions are interpreting this legislation has a big impact on who we're seeing,” Briggs said. Oklahomans for Equality currently has a fundraising campaign to support patient assistance and is working to stretch its resources to serve more people.
*By which they mean "we will still happily fund whatever procedures and medications doctors want to force on intersex adults & children"
You know what I know I'm usually pretty silent but I need you all to understand the horrible impact SpaceX and Starship has had on South Texas.
Yes, fuck those ugly ass cyber trucks but FUCK that Space Center.
Starship genuine danger to the people who live here. It's to the point many of the people here when they heard the explosion joked that it was probably another one of Elon's rockets.
This is a horrifying pattern we are becoming numb to, we hear about a planned test launch and brace ourselves for more debris.
Several of Musk's attempts at rockets, especially after the deregulation, have resulted in catastrophic explosions. Want the list? Here are a few!!
December 9th, 2020- Starship serial No. 8, or SN8. Exploded upon landing.
February 2, 2021- Starship SN9. Exploded upon landing.
March 3rd. 2021- Starship SN10. Landed in one piece. Fire at the skirt caused an explosion.
April 20, 2023- Starship. Exploded once more. Debris scattered in Port Isabell.
March 6, 2025- Flight 8. Spun out of control and exploded in a mass of fireballs. Planes had to be grounded due to the mass explosion and the debris are stills scattered in the ocean.
And now we have the most recent and the worse one yet.
June 18-19, 2025- Starship 36 during a GROUND test caused a mass explosion, the looming mushroom cloud causing locals in Cameron to believed they had been bombed.
The loser describes this it as a "rapid unscheduled disassembly" instead of what they are: fiery failures locals have to deal with as a result.
Pretty much everyone locally knows Elon Musk and his negative impact on our home, people who have had the unfortunate curse to have worked with him and the center call it Cultish, 8 members of his staff who spoke out against his behavior and sexual harassment were all fired.
Its a well known fact he hates the people here, and he goes out of his way to find employees who are not from this area and move them down here.
Musk has tried to encourage even more white people to come down to South Texas and live in his "Starship City". An attempt to gentrify and push out local citizens.
Rebekah Hinojosa, a local Activist with Another Gulf Is Possible, even had her home unlawfully entered by police after an alleged graffiti on a mural he commisioned (which didn't even obscure the mural).
This article is a good read on everything Musk has done to South Texas

This June, I need Gen Z queers to understand that some people are closeted.
I am saying this as a Gen Z queer, before y’all get your guns out to fucking shoot me.
But I need y’all to understand that if someone doesn’t give you their government name in a queer space, it’s not because they’re “mysterious,” and you do not have permission to take it upon yourself to figure out their “real identity” and go digging for them online like a private investigator. First, that’s creepy and a violation of privacy and reasonable boundaries. Second, some of us keep our private and professional lives very separate because we need to keep food on the fucking table and a roof over our heads, and our private life could jeopardize that.
“Why won’t you tell me about your parents?” “Why can’t I know your real name?” “Where do you work?”
1.) Not all our parents would bake us a fucking cake when we come out. Some of us are closeted. Surely you understand this? You also do not need to know my parent’s names or occupations; we are both adults. I do not need nor want to mix you and my private life with my parents and my public life.
2.) Trans people do not owe you their dead name or government name
3.) I’m not telling you for the sake of job security. I am a government fucking caseworker working amidst a fucking lavender panic!
“There’s no way you’re a different person outside this; you’re still you at your core. What harm is there—”
No, I am a completely different person. A different person with a different personality and different interests and a different name and presentation. I am a completely different person because I keep this life and my public life private to avoid fracturing 90% of my interpersonal relationships and 100% of my professional ones.
“You’re not out? But you’re so confident.”
See— that’s part of the issue. Y’all assume someone is in the closet because they hate themselves or lack self-identity. Some of us know exactly who we are, but need to prioritize financial stability or else our entire life gets exponentially harder immediately.
You meet queer people over the age of 40 and one of the first/earliest questions is “who knows?”
I need y’all to start bringing that energy. Because it’s not always safe for someone to be out and not everyone is safe to be out around.
There is a misnomer that “the closet” inherently means “doesn’t know they’re queer” and not “isn’t out widely and publicly.” “Outness” is often a patchwork.
Even if someone who isnt out does share any life details with you, you keep those to yourself. You tread carefully and assume others dont know until told otherwise. And sometimes you lie and help keep that closet door shut. It is ok to feel super weird about it if someone comes out to you as trans but tells you to only use their preferred name and pronouns privately just the two of you. It's fine to feel uncomfortable when people ask you if a gay person has an opposite gendered partner. It is so valid to feel weird and bad deadnaming someone even though they requested it. It stops being valid if you do anything other than they asked. Feel your feelings, and keep them to yourself - someone else's identity isn't about you.
okay, i’m curious. let’s play a game. reblog this post and put in the tags the name of a fictional Indigenous character.
No headcanons, no ‘coding’, only CANONICALLY Indigenous characters. You have unlimited time. Go.
if another FUCKING person mentions the fucking werewolves from twilight I'm going to burn this whole site down and take you all with me
Iran were hustled out of the United States so quickly that the team’s players had to be iced and bandaged on the plane back to their base in Mexico. [...]
The impact on players has been so disruptive that it is hard to fully estimate, Mr. Araujo said. Iran’s squad has had to make do without its media officers, analysts and other staff members required to carry out crucial tasks like managing mid-game substitutions. [...]
Boarding the plane presented its own challenges. A checkpoint was set up yards from their airplane, where two at a time, Iran’s players and delegation underwent a second screening after already having cleared security checks and passport control inside the airport. “It took more than three hours to get inside the plane,” Mr. Araujo said.
new york war crimes
this is security theatre performed solely to humiliate the completely civilian representatives of another country and arguably, a bit of cheating to prevent even a minor bit of sporting success that could rally the iranian people and/or make the usmnt look bad.
