i do think people need to understand that when they see arguments over Jihad in Islam, and what it really means - whether it is about holy war or personal struggle - that they are NOT witnessing, in fact, an argument between a party that is misrepresenting Islam and a party that is truthfully representing Islam.

What they are witnessing is the externalisation of a debate which is internal to Islam and which is in fact centuries old. you are witnessing a battleground between ideas within Islam. Islamicate scholars themselves have debated and argued how to understand jihad, and what is principle to the idea. So keep in mind that, for example, when a muslim tells you Jihad is about personal struggle, and some people twist it to mean war, this is as much about their view of islam and what they believe is the correct way of following islam, as it is about correcting outsider misconceptions. By making this statement, they are attempting to make it true by undermining the ability of other people, especially other Muslims, to say it means holy war.

Truthfully, it would be dishonest, i think, to say either that jihad does not ever mean holy war or that jihad only ever means holy war, or even that it principally means holy war.

HUGE red flag by Bonesaw tbh

Nobody talks about this but her art is actually SUPER problematic.

First off, ONE of her guerilla sculptures, the anatomical piece she put up in the walk-in freezer of a rec center in Brockton Bay was APPARENTLY made with unethically sourced materials.

Not only that, but her red mist piece was put up all across Brockton Bay without consulting the city for environmental concerns, and was actually toxic, which hurt the most marginalized people in the city.

Then there's her "underwater" piece on sadness she set up under the harbor, which has the same problems as both of the pieces I mentioned, but also apparently had a widespread effect on the mental health of a LOT of people in the area.

Honestly I can't believe she hasn't been cancelled already. It really says things about people's priorities that they're okay with this, and I'm lowkey judging you all for it

There was some reasonable nitpicking from @centrally-unplanned and a few others when I posted this American Affairs article about the Navy, but I still think its basic premise stands:

The Navy is fully aware that winning a kinetic war with China is fundamentally impossible (doubly-so now that we’re going out of our way to alienate everyone who might be a potential friendshoring ally with trade barriers and general shithouse diplomatic behavior, which wasn’t yet obvious at the time the article was published), and so with that ostensible goal out of the question, they’ve pivoted to a much more achievable goal of “looking good in front of our geriatric Congress which still thinks it’s 1945.”
