Fundamental: Necessary base or core; of central importance. Urbanism: The characteristic way of interaction of inhabitants of cities with the built environment. Fundamental Urbanism then entails tenements of central importance to create more just, livable, and resilient urban environs. What is a city? What determines its specificity? What shapes its quality? How do human activities interact with its material processes? The evolution of the contemporary city does not follow a linear movement. It is shaped by transformation processes that are directed towards often distant and conflicting goals, promoted by a multitude of actors that interact without knowledge of the overall situation. How can architecture and urbanism interact with the contemporary city’s internal form-generating capabilities? How can they relate to evolution by drift that is the hallmark of the contemporary city, and to its inertia?
