Last night I wrote a Reborn!Bubba fanfic with my OC Clever because I love evil angst

Knock knock knock!
This again… Bubba thought he made it very clear he didn’t want to talk to anyone.
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK!!
“Bubbaphant! I know you’re inside!”
Wait… this voice wasn’t familiar. Who was at his door?
“Bubbaphaaaant! You better not be backing out now! We agreed on today!”
It was a feminine voice, but nothing like Bobby, Crafty, Picky or Hoppy’s. He really wasn’t in the mood to talk, but it didn’t sound like they would leave until he acknowledged them… he’ll just tell them to leave and be done with it. He begrudgingly put his hand on the doorknob.
creeeeeak…
It was… a cow? She was off-white with brown spots, with a pair of goggles on her head, and a cowbell pendant around her neck. He had definitely never seen a toy like her in the factory before… who was she supposed to be??
“There you are, Bubbaphant! You didn’t think you could hide from me, did you?” She casually leaned on the doorframe with one arm, the other on her hip. She had a smug expression on her face, staring right at him.
Bubba leaned away from her. She may seem familiar with him, but he was not familiar with her. “What are you talking about? Who-“
“Don’t tell me you forgot, Bubbaphant! We agreed that we would have an inventing contest today!”
“…no I didn’t.”
“Don’t be ridiculous! We did so a week and a half ago! You actually seemed excited about it…”
“I don’t know who you are.”
The cow critter paused. For a moment, she looked utterly shocked… before bursting into laughter.
“OHOHOHOHO! Oh, Bubbaphant, since when were you the joking type? Of course you know who I am!”
“I don’t.” Bubba was starting to get annoyed.
Her eyes darted back and forth, anxiously. “…It’s me! Clever Cowbelle? Your greatest scientific rival? If this is meant to be funny, I’m afraid comedy just isn’t your calling, Bubbaphant.”
“I said, I don’t know you.”
‘Clever’ frowned. She didn’t seem to believe what she was hearing… she almost looked… upset? Until a realization seemed to cross her mind.
“Ahhh, I see what’s going on here!” Clever grinned, and took a step closer. Bubba took a step back. He didn’t like this.
“What-“
“You thought you could fool me there, didn’t you? But I’m far too smart for that!” Another step closer.
“Stop-“
“You’re simply scared to lose to my overwhelming genius, so you’re pretending to have forgotten completely! But I know better! Like you say, an elephant always remembers!”
She leans in, inches away from his face.
“I’m flattered, but wouldn’t it be more fun if-“
“GET AWAY FROM ME!”
SMACK!!
Bubba pushes Clever away from him, hitting her right in the face and sending her to the ground.
“OWW!!” She rubbed her face where Bubba had hit her, now utterly enraged. “WHAT IN THE WORLD IS YOUR PROBLEM!? DON’T YOU KNOW HOW TO-“
“Leave.”
Clever tenses up. “Wh- what?”
“I don’t know who you are, and I don’t want you here. Leave, now.”
Clever sits there, stunned. After a few seconds, she stands up, brushes herself off, and smiles.
“Fine. I understand. If you really weren’t in the mood, you didn’t have to lie to me. Even I can take a hint…”
Bubba is silent.
“I… apologize for bothering you, Bubba. It won’t happen again. Good day.”
Clever turns around and walks away. Bubba shuts the door and lets out a long sigh.
That was… incredibly uncomfortable…
He didn’t mean to hit her so hard. Was he too harsh? She didn’t seem malicious…
…No. She shouldn’t have gotten so close to him. And he didn’t have time for any stupid contests. He needed to figure out why he was here.
…and barricade his doors.
“Goodness, what was his problem!? He’s never gotten that angry with me before! I didn’t even do anything to him!” Clever complained to no one in particular as she stormed away from Bubba’s house.
“…did I?”
She stopped in her tracks. She’s not too proud to admit that she could be… annoying at times. But he was annoying too! And they were supposed to have a mutual rivalry!
She did get rather up in his personal space… but he’s never reacted this badly to it! Hell, he would sometimes return the favor when their competition got particularly intense! This sudden hostility was completely unwarranted! Right!?
…Did he just get tired of her? It wouldn’t be the first time people got annoyed with her and… started avoiding her…
Maybe he only agreed to that competition so she would leave him alone… maybe he was finally sick of her too…
A familiar feeling creeped up her throat… she covered her face with her hooves.
“Goodness, Cowbelle. You can’t be acting so childish out here in the open… someone could see you…”
Try as she might, she couldn’t hold back her tears. As much as she hated to admit it… she cared about Bubbaphant. Their rivalry, silly as it may have been, was so important to her…
All good things must come to an end, Clever supposed. Bubbaphant clearly didn’t care about her anymore. For goodness sake, he was claiming not to know her! And that was… fine. She didn’t care. There was nothing she could do about it now. Nothing except move on.

• projecting here but i hc him as the kind of guy to loooove video game soundtracks and anime openings 😭 he branches out to other genres too though!
• trans (ftm) and bi
• he has personalized house keys hidden on his front porch for each of the smiling critters 🥹 they’re all in places they would individually think to look first
• trumpets when he gets really excited
• very enthusiastic about his interests + love love loves infodumping + collecting merchandise
• loves space!! loves reading about it, loves looking at cool images, star gazing and talking about it with friends
(this headcanon was kinda confirmed for me in the critter comic with touille and baba where he brings a planet sleeping bag to the haunted house which made me. Super normal)

• the friend with the loud ass laugh💀💀 you will hear him from a mile away
• jokes consist of a lot of Niche nerdy internet references
• pursues some kind of scientific career later on in life (my mind is stuck between a planetary scientist / medical lab scientist which is why i have him in a lab coat + goggles in my older vers of my starstudent designs!!)
• takes a while to get really comfortable around others + standoffish when meeting new people but it’s not intentional
