Random ROR angst headcanons‼️‼️ Nobody is safe tonight ‼️‼️❤️
Johnny Worthington III
—Ah, the good old Worthington generational trauma + daddy issues combo. Being born as the sole heir to such a prestigious family comes with its challenges. Lots of expectations and pressure put on you from a young age. Johnny has to be the best because he has no choice. He’s messed up before, of course, when he was little, and he learned his lesson quickly. And gained a crippling fear of failure as an added bonus.
—He was born a Worthington. He was destined to scare, and eventually inherit the family business, since the day he was born. He learned to fear the scrutiny and disappointment of his father early on. His relationship with his family wasn’t quite affectionate. Every interaction was always so uptight and punctual, feeling more like business meetings than conversations.
—If you know me, then you already know I hate how MAW portrayed Johnny, mostly how it watered down his character into ‘evil CEO number two’. My ideal version is more like this; Johnny didn’t do what he did out of pure greed or envy. He did what he did because he felt as if he had to.
—When the shift to laughter began, it was a threat to everything Johnny and his family believed in. Monsters were meant to scare! Their entire legacy was built on fear, harvesting screams, and providing for monsterkind. And to see laughter being so much more powerful than screams… It changed everything.
—He’s a Worthington. He was born, raised, and lived to scare. His family had done it for generations, and if scaring became obsolete… Then everything he’s ever done has been for nothing. Yes, it was about money. Yes, it was about pride. But first and foremost, his actions were motivated by legacy.
—Yeah, everything about Randall in season two was bullshit, and since my retelling is a bit long, I’ll shorten it. Basically, Randall returns to the monster world via one of FearCo.’s doors, and because Randall is mentally ill and extremely petty, he gives Johnny the idea to steal laugh energy and mix it with screams, his ultimate goal to get Johnny to blow himself up. Johnny didn’t know mixing screams and laughs was dangerous, since laugh power is a fairly new discovery and monsters don’t fully understand its full power. And Randall doesn’t reveal himself to Tylor. (Even if he did he wouldn’t have done that stupid exposition dump and EXPLAINED HIS EVIL PLAN to Tylor who he didn’t even know if he was really with them?? Dumbass plot istg)
Javier Rios
—Surprisingly he’s the least messed up mentally. The only thing I really have is that his dad is dead, but it didn’t affect him because he died before he hatched.
—And while yes, it WAS a rumor that his mom ate his dad, Javier himself never heard about it until he was much older, and even then nobody knows if those rumors were true.
—Yeah, there’s really nothing seriously wrong with him. He’s just naturally quiet and reserved like that.
Chet Alexander
—There’s a lot that happened to him, as a child. I’ll just say that his dad wasn’t very nice to him. He’d hold his son close, and hold him very tight, but with no love or kindness in his embrace. His mom didn’t do much about it. This is where the people pleasing comes from. If I make them happy, maybe I’ll be worthy of loving.
—Unsurprisingly he was bullied all through school. Despite coming from a wealthy family, no amount of social status could protect him from the ruthless cruelty of his peers.
—But then college rolled around. And he met Johnny. His hero. The first person to see potential in him, to show him an ounce of acceptance, to care. And then pleasing Johnny became the only thing that mattered in the world. He’d be whatever Johnny needed him to be; a jokester, a bully, a punching bag… Anything. Johnny had hand-picked him, sculpted him, MADE him into a real monster, and placed him amongst his elites.
—And that’s how college went. He gave it his all, for him. And in those instances where he failed, or he spoke too much, or acted wrong, it was the end of the world. He’d go to his room, where nobody would have to witness his ugly emotions, and stew in his own self hatred. Tearing himself apart. And the next day, it’s as if nothing happened. And as far as everyone else was concerned, nothing did happen.
—It took a while— About a decade, to be precise— To start to doubt him. To realize he never cared. That nobody was there. And he’s all alone. Gone. Family disowned him. His old ‘brothers’ have moved on. Without him.
—And even when he’s free, when he’s helped save the city… Somehow freedom feels worse than being caged. Johnnys in jail, because of him. A part of him wants to run back to him, beg for forgiveness, and go back to how things were. Despite knowing how awful he was, he misses him, grieves him.
—Johnny had become such a large part of his life, of him, like a fucking tumor, that his absence has left a giant empty void in his wake. He depended on him to survive, he kept him so busy he was isolated from society. All to keep him dependent on him. Chet did everything for him. Because of him. Now he’s gone. Left without a purpose, no one to please, no point to exist.
Reggie Jacobs
—When Reggie’s mother gave birth, she’d hoped for a good child. A normal one. But instead, she got Reggie.
—From a young age, Reggie was prone to tantrums and screaming and being difficult. But all children do that, dint they? No. Reggie was worse. Something was wrong with him.
—It was maddening. The crying, the screaming. There’s only so much a woman can take. Of course she’d never hurt her child… But this was no child. It was a mistake.
—Eventually she couldn’t handle it anymore. When Reggie was being unbearable, she’d lock him in a cage, somewhere dark and warm and dusty. The screaming would become crying when he noticed nobody was coming to take care of him. That he was scared. But she wouldn’t come down, not until the noises stopped. He developed severe claustrophobia from this.
—Eventually he’d figured out when his mother was taking him to the cage, and he’d begin to struggle against her. He bit her. And then came the muzzle.
—He didn’t understand. How was a baby supposed to understand that its mother didn’t want to deal with it anymore?
—His mom learned of more things wrong with him when school began. He wasn’t keeping up with the other children. He couldn’t speak right. He could spell or read or count right. And worst of all? When he’d get upset, he’d scare the other children.
—Reggie would try to be good, he really tried. But everyone seemed to either hate him, or be afraid of him. There seemed to be no point in trying to be better. And since everyone already decided he’s a monster, then why not show them just how bad he could get?
—It was a miracle he’d gotten into Monsters University. It was most likely for his scary looks. And somehow he’d been picked up into ROR. His scary looks and beastly tenacity made up for his lack of smarts.
—He tries to act like he knows what he’s doing. He won’t let the others find out how much of a moron he is. He knows he isn’t smart, and he hates it. He tries to learn, read books, study in his free time all to try and get smarter, but he just… can’t.
—He’s insecure about it, too. Whenever someone makes fun of him for being dumb, assuming he doesn’t know they’re mocking him, it sends him into a rage. If it weren’t for his tiny legs he’d catch up to them and kick their asses.
Chip Goff
—Unlike his current self, Chip used to be a very happy and sweet little boy. It was just him and his mom against the world.
—But everything changed when she started getting sick. It wasn’t a regular sickness. It never got better.
—Chip’s grandparents would take him to visit her a few times a week. He’d sit on her lap and tell her about his day, what he ate for lunch (whispering to his mother that grandmas food wasn’t as good as hers), while drawing in crayon. She’d laugh at his silly antics, with love in her eyes… What color were they again? His memory of her has been slipping.
—But she never got better. She only got worse. Soon he wasn’t allowed on the bed anymore because she was too sick. His drawings adorned the sterile hospital walls.
—One time he went in for a hug… Only for his mother to seize up violently. And then she began to thrash around in a way that wasn’t natural at all. Contorting and twitching, making a horrible groaning noise. As the doctors rushed to her, there was a brief moment where he met her eyes. He’s never quite recovered from that moment.
—The next visits, he was scared to approach his mother. It broke her heart. But it only got worse. She went into a long sleep. Little chip would sit next to her, drawing, but with less joy, less liveliness. The sound of the equipment beeping and the sound of her oxygen was a sound he’d never forget. He’d lay his head next to her and tell her what they’d do when she woke up.
—That day never came.
—He doesn’t remember her face anymore. But everything else continues to haunt him. Sometimes he still hears the sound of the hospital around him. Sometimes he sees things moving in the shadows when he’s trying to sleep. Sometimes he sees her, dressed in a hospital gown, her long hair a mess. Sometimes she turns to face him. And to try and fill in the blanks of his memory, his mind tries to make up an image to replace her forgotten face.
—Which is why he never meets her gaze. He knows she’s not real. But he can’t stomach to see what horrible shape it could take this time. But despite himself, sometimes he looks by accident. And it makes him wish he could just forget her completely.
