About the community you made a few mistakes-Abed is actually part Polish, Annie is Jewish, and Ben Chang is Chinese.(Also one episode said that Jeff's comes ancesty is Wales and Britta's ancesty is Sweden.)

In the original post, I noted that Abed is mixed (though, truthfully, I didn’t mention that part of the mix was Polish), but I missed out on Annie’s heritage entirely, and I apologize for that. Ben Chang the character might be Chinese, but his actor IS Korean, which was what I’d written. As for Jeff and Britta -- while they might have Welsh and Swedish heritage, I generally look for that heritage to influence more than just a line in an episode before I include it on a post, as otherwise it doesn’t really inform their characters much.

Example of racial diversity: Elementary

Example of gender identity diversity: Elementary

This series is an example of racial diversity through its main cast. Lucy Liu, who plays Dr. Joan Watson, is a Chinese-American actress. Jon Michael Hill, an African-American man, plays Detective First Grade Marcus Bell. Ato Essandoh, another African-American man, plays Alfred Llamosa, Sherlock's sponsor in NA.

This series is also an example of gender identity diversity. While the majority of the people of the show are cis men and cis women, Candis Cayne, the actress who plays Mrs. Hudson, is a trans woman, and is the first trans actress to break into prime time, though this show was not her break into primetime. Mrs. Hudson is also a trans woman in the show's canon.

The show airs on CBS, and is currently in its third season.

The West Wing

The West Wing is a TV show that I’ve loved watching, and while I’ve only gotten midway through Season 4, I’ve been watching for ways that I could classify it on the diversity blog. I did find a way, so expect to see it on this blog sometime in the near future!

Example of racial diversity: Selfie

This series is an example of racial diversity through its main cast. John Cho, a Korean actor, played the eventually romantic male lead, Henry Higgs, to Karen Gillian's white Eliza Dooley. Da'Vine Joy Randolph, an African American actress, played Charmonique. David Harewood, a British Black actor, played Sam Saperstein. The series, which aired on ABC, was cancelled before the end of its first season, but the final episodes are being released weekly on Hulu.

Example of racial diversity: Falling Skies

This series is an example of racial diversity through its main cast. Moon Bloodgood, a Korean-American actress, plays Anne Glass, while Seychelle Gabriel, a Mexican-American actress, plays Lourdes, and Mpho Kaoho's parents were South African before they moved to Canada. Kaoho plays Anthony on the show. Falling Skies airs on SyFy, and will be entering its fifth and final season.

Example of racial diversity: Big Hero 6

This movie is an example of racial diversity through its main characters. Hiro Hamada is biracial (Japanese-American), as is his older brother, Tadashi. Go-Go Tamago is Korean. Wasabi no Ginger, in a change from the comics, is African-American. Honey Lemon is a white-passing Latina woman. In another change, Fred, who was originally Ainu (a Japanese racial minority) in the comics. He was changed to white for the film.

Example of racial diversity: Survivors

This series was an example of racial diversity through its main cast members. Patterson Joseph, who played Greg Preston, is a black man. Chahak Patel, who played Najid Hanif, is Indian, from the best research that I could do. Nikki Amuka-Bird, who played Samantha Willis is an African woman, and was born in Nigeria. Phillip Rhys, who played Al Sadiq, is a dark-skinned man, but I was not able to find any information on his heredity. It is worth mentioning that the name 'Sadiq' means 'friend' in Arabic. It is also worth noting that this show was a reboot of a 1970s show, and that when the show was being rebooted, Adrian Hodges, one of the screenwriters and creators of this version, placed an emphasis on ensuring that the new version reflected a cultural and class mix. To help with that, he created two characters (Al and Najid).

Example of racial diversity: Dogma

This movie was an example of racial diversity through its cast. Chris Rock played Rufus the 13th Apostle, and commented on the whitewashing and inherent bigotry found in many Christian churches, as well as Catholic dogma. Selma Hayek, a Mexican actress, played Serendipity, a muse, and commented on how women are portrayed in the Bible. The film itself is a satirical look at the Catholic church and its theology.

Example of racial diversity: Cyberchase

This show is an example of racial diversity through it's three lead characters; Jackie, an African-American preteen girl, Inez, a Hispanic preteen girl, and Matt, a White preteen boy. The show taught kids about technology, math, and computer science through the kids' adventures.

Example of racial diversity: Maya & Miguel

Maya and Miguel is an example of racial diversity through its main characters, Maya and Miguel, who were siblings. They are the children of a Puerto Rican father and a Mexican mother, and their friends also qualify. Maggie Lee, one of Maya's friends, is Chinese-American, while Chrissy Lum, another friend, is Dominican-American. For Miguel's friends, there was Theo McEwan, who was African-American. Another one of Miguel's friends was Andy Arlington. Andy was white, but he was an example of diversity in another way: he only had one hand.

Example of racial diversity: Agents of Shield

This show is an example of racial diversity by being the first series to have two leading women who are Asian-American -- Ming-Na Wen, the actress of Melinda May, who was born in Macau, and grew up in Hong Kong, and Chloe Bennet, the actress of Skye, who is biracial with a Chinese-American father. The series' regulars also includes BJ Britt, the actor of Antoine Triplett, an African-American man who joined the cast later in the first season. Among the less morally-inclined on the cast is Ruth Negga, a biracial woman of Irish-Ethopian heritage, who plays Raina, also known as 'Flowers' on the show. For all of the show's racial diversity, though, it's starting to gain a habit of killing off the comics-canonically lesbian women before the women have a chance to establish their sexuality.

Example of racial diversity: Brooklyn Nine-Nine

This series is an example of racial diversity through its cast. Stephanie Beatriz, who plays Detective Rosa Diaz, is from Argentina. Terry Crews, who plays Detective Sergeant Terry Jeffords, is an African-American man. Melissa Fumero, who plays Detective Amy Santiago, is of Cuban descent. Andre Braugher, another African-American man, plays Captain Ray Holt. The TV series airs on Fox, and is currently in its second season.
