La Femme - La Femme Ressort

If there is a narrative to find out of this collection of reveries, it's the mystery of the woman: omnipresent, multifaceted, embodied by five lovely female voices. In the eerie 'La Femme', Clara Luciani's ghostly voice suggests the woman is a femme fatale, a vampire-like Salomé that will lead the hero to his fall, while in 'La Femme Ressort', a hypnotic and lingering piano melody, Clémence Quelennec, introduces herself as "the spiral", a jack in a Pandora's box.

This is some really plunky piano dance music that reminds me of Os Mutantes and summers in my uncle's place in Liège, playing Resident Evil on Playstation and listening to whatever was on the radio.

Caveman the Wise - Return of the Caveman

"'Everyone’s in it to make music, not to make money.' There’s nothing new about musicians giving their work away for free, forfeiting track or album sales to encourage future gains. Free downloads hypothetically attract more fans to listen, encouraging increased attention and exposure, and potentially leading to performance income or merch sales. The formula isn't groundbreaking, neither is it complete when encapsulating what Day Old Records is all about though. Here, Victor French — who records and releases downtempo electronic music for the label as Caveman the Wise — is referencing something greater than an art versus commerce debate: He’s talking about community."

Still banging around with this album, all of it sounding like something from Brainfeeder's future. I love his mix of Star Wars samples, acoustic instrumentation, and bass dub. Wish I could find more videos made for this guy's work.

Black Milk - Dirt Bells

"Comprised of just nine tracks, Glitches in the Break is a testament to a time when the geography of Hip Hop looked unrecognizable to today; a time so revered it has been dubbed as the genre’s Golden Age. Nothing - Bent Nail

"Oppressive and at times, seemingly suicidal, Guilty of Everything is a summary of the time preceding it shared by its founding members, including an attempted murder charge and years in prison spent reflecting through reading and writing. On top of that was the hopelessness of "recovery" after incarceration in one of Philadelphia's most crime-ridden neighborhoods and the deaths of two close friends. The album wasn't celebrated in a sleek, clean Center City venue (if such a place in Philly even exists), but in a dive bar in the very neighborhood the band seems to have, at least momentarily, defeated."

Caveman the Wise - Stranger in a Strange Land

This is right in line with artists like nujabes from the orient-influenced hip hop canon of hypnotizing beats that dance into the sunset. The footage is from Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (1954).

BRONCHO - Class Historian
