What Queen Visenya would have worn, Nicholas K

Visenya was described to be one of the most beautiful women in history, scarily stunning even when considering her bloodline that was considered above - human in their allure. Possessed of the silver-gold hair and purple eyes of Valyria, tall and lean, voluptuous and elegant, she was a cold, harsh and ethereal beauty, stern in her looks as she was in demeanour. Though, despite her attractiveness, she was viewed far differently than any queen or highborn woman ever was, not only by those who knew her best but also by the smallfolk. She was feared by most, known to have a dark and unforgiving side, a powerful, recalcitrant and brilliant ruler with an unequaled mind for politics and supreme talent for tactics, much more a warrior than a lady, and not the innocent, lively maid people expected to see in a female of her status.

Visenya both in personality and behaviour, defied all rules and norms that were accepted by a patriarchal and misogynistic society where women were seen as delicate, fragile birds, treated like objects or property of men, expected only to sing and sew, to sit silent and look pretty, while she, on the other hand, was a natural leader, lethal and extremely capable, refusing to be what everyone willed see as the perfect comely maid, unafraid to show that she was very comfortable both in silk and velvet as well as chain and armour. 

Even Aegon himself was undoubtedly intimidated by her, presumably annoyed and bothered by the fact that she didn’t hold back for the sake of ‘pleasing her king’, and that she didn’t act the pliant wife or the blushing bride. While he most definitely trusted and respected her, he canonically tried avoiding her presence in council, often sent her away on oversea quests since they both aimed for the same power-place, and she opposed him and reached for the spot herself, which was very ‘unusual’ for a woman all by itself, but she was also stubborn and cunning and intelligent on top of it, and it probably didn’t serve his claimed title of ‘mighty king’ very well.

‘Aegon married Visenya out of duty’ indeed because she was no soft, gentle lover, she was competition. And she married him out of duty because she wanted no husband, she wanted a throne to sit and an army to command. It was also said that ‘Aegon spent 10 nights in Rhaenys’ bed for each one with Visenya’, and that was what they both preferred and not just Aegon’s choice. Visenya had no interest in being bedded lest for the purpose of bearing a child as legacy and for safety, and while she deftly handled seducing him, she turned into a block of ice right after and became inevitably disinterested in the actual act that followed, while Rhaenys was a delicate flower of a woman that knew how to act warm and pleased to get her way. 

Thus, quite naturally, Aegon chose the younger sister over the older, because while Visenya was an exceptional woman and was quite literally said to be a ‘seductress’, he probably knew it was only she following an obligatory responsibility, especially because she was being openly manipulative in her advances (which were already quite scarce and more often not initiated by her) towards him to secure her place as an heir-bearing partner. She was more a ‘king’ herself than ‘a wife’, which made them almost rivals rather than husband and wife, but more the conventional brother and sister. 

Rhaenys, even though she perfectly fit the ‘feminine’ expectations of people, was more than capable and powerful herself and quickly learned how to use her qualities which made her desirable to Aegon, for her personal gain. He desired the soft, kindhearted, free-spirited and warm Rhaenys over the harsh, cold, dangerous and ambitious Visenya, and she was not bothered by it.
