There’s this outcropping back home, it overlooks... a forest? I suppose you can call it that. The trees aren’t what you’d normally see, and the creatures are weird as hell but, yeah. It was a forest. The rocks there must have been damaged from storms or alien fights or something, because they were easy enough to climb. 

I used to climb them all the time. Would climb as high as I could go to see as far as I could. Of course with it just over looking those stupid bizarre trees, I could never see much. But at night? When I could sneak out without anyone noticing... you could see so much more. 

Not on the planet of course. As much as the stories say it was some paradise, it wasn’t. It was a prison so don’t get that shit twisted up. Dad, liked his tall tales in his stories, and his paradise wasn’t what you all think it is. But the stars? Oh man... the night sky there was better than anywhere. 

You could see so many. I tried to count them once and ended up falling asleep there. Because I was so small, no one could find me. I remember Troy calling for me in the morning. He was the only one who knew about my spot. I told him about it. Said I’d bring him up there when we got him a better arm, not the one he built...

Never got to show him that view.

But we got a better one now. One without the bars keeping us in.

The easiest one to mention would be when I was forced from my brother, but as I was newly born and don’t honestly remember that... I can’t use it here huh? I mean I still have phantom pains sometimes. I have the scar too... not like he does but... 

Guess the event I can talk the most about... that was actually the most jarring... was the death of my mother. She was a saint, so don’t get that twisted. I am... I am not. Age doesn’t really matter and I guess it means fuck all now, but I was young. You see... I was born a Siren. Sweet deal right? Father thought I was a monster from the start, probably wanted to kill me after he saved his baby boy from me... but that’s not the event here. 

The event... is her death. You see she was teaching me. About Sirens, about my powers, about the universe that was going to come for me. She knew that life would find a way and that someday someone was going to come for me. I wasn’t going to be safe forever in dad’s little paradise prison. She knew the truth. I was going to have to defend myself. No one else was going to be able to do it for me. 

So she trained me. Taught me. She didn’t shelter me. She didn’t lie to me. She told me the honest truth of this rotten world, and what they would eventually do to me... or what they would do to Troy to get to me. 

During one night... I had a nightmare. A bad one. One that shakes you for days and weeks later. I still see those shadows today actually. Inching towards me. Looming. Threatening. Wanting me. My mother, the saint she was, came running. I could hear dad telling her not to. That I was dangerous... I think Troy was somewhere close too, he always was back then. I couldn’t leave him alone. It wasn’t him who clung to me... I clung to him... 

Mom she... she climbed up onto my bed and... started singing and the nightmares faded into this mist. She kept saying over and over again, It’s gonna be okay Starlight. You are stronger than you know. The universe isn’t ready for you. The stars will be yours...

She was gone. Dust in my hands. 

I remember crying myself to sleep for years.

The main one I think a lot of people have probably guessed by now... I killed my own mother. I’m not going to claim it was an accident or anything like that, because well... I don’t want sympathy. I’ll live with the nightmares from that day for the rest of my life. I have scars on my heart from it. She was my hero and my idol and... I took her away from the world and from Troy. When he needed her the most... That’s on me. 

She knew I was a siren, and her research... she found what siren I had taken my power from. She knew it was going to be hard and she tried... she tried so hard to make me understand. But I was a brat... still am. I didn’t listen. I wish I had. I wish I had paid attention to her and...

I wish I could go back just to hear her voice again.

I do actually. It’s not really that great of one, but I think it’s pretty neat. You see we didn’t really have things back home. A few lost relics from the company wars, lots of alien bullshit, but nothing that really stood out. I guess there were some cool plants but I wasn’t allowed to bring anything back “home”. As if you could ever call it that... 

Then... we came to Pandora and... whoa. There was just so much here. And that’s when my collection started. 

At first it was just one or two little pieces but once our followers found out? Well let’s just say that I have a castle of stuff now. 

Hundreds of little pebbles that I’ve never seen before. Hundreds of thousands of shinny little stones and... 

I have a stone garden now. You see I pretty much can’t touch most living things. But stone? Stone I can touch. And here on Pandora there are so many different ones. Whatever the DAHL and ATLAS and HYPERION did to this place... it turned the very ground into incredible jewels.
