last thing i'll say tn--now that this is over i can finally decide what aspects of show daeron im incorporating into my old portrayal & how im making it all fit together so expect that some time this week.... show daeron is so very special to me BUT so is the daeron that has existed in notes on my google drive for the last couple years and i will be testing my cringe tolerance reading through my old writing to merge them into one being <3
this quickly devolved into explaining every thought i’ve ever had about him and where it came from so i've forced myself to write a shorter version; anything that’s a new integration or change from season 3 is in purple! i've put a‼️around the ones that are more worth reading bc theres a lot here lmao
( p.s. would love nothing more than for him to have his little gang of fellow squire friends <3 if anyone wants to write affliated OCs or just throw your existing OCs / characters with a HOTD verse at me so we can cook something up i will love you forever 🫀 )
traits & skills
‼️my daeron is more outgoing and gregarious than show daeron (though only see him around ppl his own age for like 3 seconds and they seem to get along great so maybe show daeron is like that too!). he is at ease around people because when he is alone it’s much harder to ignore the bone deep loneliness that he more or less always feels. people generally like him because he is self-effacing and kind to everyone, regardless of whether they are “beneath him.” while he’s definitely not the life of the party by any means, he will go out of his way to talk to the person who is standing alone in the corner at the party if that makes sense. ‼️
‼️daeron highly imaginative, prone to drift into daydreaming, and still kisses his little tapestry of his family goodnight before he goes to sleep. he adores tales of brave knights and beautiful princesses and has projected them onto his siblings, especially aemond, who he WORSHIPS. ‼️
‼️he is genuinely pious, attends whatever version of mass they have regularly (usually twice a week), engages in confession frequently, and prays daily. he was raised to be religious and there was an element of anti-targaryen sentiment within that, whether that comes from the faith’s historical view of them or from ormund’s beliefs. either way it’s got its claws DEEP in him and has warped the way he views himself mostly for the negative and given him intrusive thoughts abt targaryen behaviors ™️ that he obsessively monitors but that needs its own post. this is one of my OLD hcs so it can still stand regardless of whether or not ormund has directly told him his blood is “tainted" but the addition of that makes it even better. (ormund's thing about smells would be a contributing factor in a preoccupation with personal hygiene but again… i'll talk about that later.)‼️
he is somewhat more assertive than the show version, but rarely directly defiant.
in s2 gwayne said he’s adept with a lute and then they never referenced that again but he IS adept with a lute and enjoys music (given alicent says ormund is fond of ballads, i think this is an area of genuine bonding for them).
he has inherited aspects of both gwayne’s athleticism and ormund’s intellect. he dgaf about history the way ormund wants him to, for better or worse, but he can pretty much always find something to romanticize and that gets him through. but often those are the only parts he retains long-term.
‼️he is a period appropriate “benevolent” misogynist; though this doesn’t necessarily mean he believes a woman can’t rule, he does see women as inherently more merciful and gentle than men (ironic given how merciful and gentle he himself is, at least at the start of the war) and believes that a queen would be unable to do something harsh/seemingly cruel for the good of the realm if it was necessary (ironic bc he also wouldn’t be able to do that). like the rest of the hightowers, daeron genuinely does view the throne as aegon’s birthright and sees rhaenyra’s claim as illegitimate. ‼️
regardless of ormund’s view of the targaryens, his respect for corlys and his “sound breeding” indicates to me that he doesn’t view valyria as a whole with the same disdain. as such it doesn’t make sense to me that daeron wouldn’t be allowed to learn high valyrian. that being said, the only people around who are fluent enough to have full conversations with him are the dragon keepers; daeron isn’t fluent by any means and can just about hold a normal conversation. (aemond would not be impressed.)
one thing about him is that he will destroy his cuticles when distressed; as with alicent, it’s often his only tell.
appearance
‼️ im keeping his brown hair i think that’s such a slay but i am giving him a little blond streak that’s often twisted into his braids. (it seems feasible that he’d be able to stain it with henna to approximately match the rest of his hair if needed for keeping him “disguised”.) ‼️
his eyes aren’t strikingly purple necessarily but they are a violet enough shade blue that people wouldn’t have reason to doubt his valyrian blood upon looking closer
he was always quite small for his age until about 12 years old
timelines
the show timeline confuses the hell out of me because it requires entire armies to teleport on command and i do not know how old anyone is actually supposed to be at any point, so my daeron’s age will be flexible-ish (between 16 and 18) in order to keep his age the same in relation to other characters where that is important. for example, if writing with an aged up jace or baela, he will also be aged up to somewhat keep intact the dynamics and thematic contrast created by the three of them being the same age, unless plotted otherwise. i’ll usually keep him a bit closer to aemond’s age than he is in the books (2ish years rather than 4; so approx 3 years younger than helaena and 5 years younger than aegon) so that he has at least some memories of important events of their childhoods lol.
(this isn’t super relevant i’ll default to assuming addam and alyn are also teenagers/young 20s unless discussed otherwise or like specified on your blog.)
he was sent to ward at approx 5 years old, so he has some memories and some existing relationship with his family, and stays in touch with his mother, grandfather, and siblings to whatever extent they are willing through letters. (this can be adapted younger for plotting if needed, or older for interaction with book based muses! in the latter case he’ll get his religious guilt from alicent and otto <3)
family dynamics
i like the show angle of ormund and gwayne both infantalizing him in different ways for different reasons, but he does have feelings about it that he will express in various ways depending upon who he’s interacting with.
his desperation for paternal affection is pretty well aligned with what i had going over here. regardless of how ormund (& ormund’s father before him) and gwayne are as father figures, he’s got deep abandonment wounds from like. being abandoned <3 (the blame for which he directs almost solely at viserys, even if he knows for some reason what alicent’s role in sending him away was)
similarly he craves someone to mother him, though this feeling is more repressed bc he feels like he's betraying alicent when it surfaces
( + he is very detached from his father & has had almost no contact with him since leaving king’s landing; any contact he has had is likely via otto. all he really remembers of viserys before that is being forced to (pretend to be) friends with jacaerys and otherwise being ignored/forgotten. )
tessarion
tessarion being chained up in the sept is unique to tumbleton and is as much a practical choice as it might be from ormund's distaste for dragons. in oldtown, she has dragonkeepers, some sort of makeshift dragon pit, and quite a lot of freedom. being confined makes her act more feral than she typically would lol but she’s always very strong willed and sort of unruly. (idk what to say about her eating that man but i doubt she’s being fed very well in there)
‼️she is nothing if not possessive lol and it sort of goes both ways, he isn’t generally a jealous person but he HATES the idea of her bonding with someone else one day when he is dead. tessarion is the only being he doesn't fear being abandoned by. ( in combination with ormund’s possessiveness to whatever degree that exists, his view of love is Not Healthy.) ‼️
hatched from her egg shortly before he was sent to oldtown, so she has had very little interaction with other dragons.
i am not sure how this aligns with either the book or the show, but tessarion has been big enough to bear a rider since he was about 14.
a few thoughts on events of the war
‼️i can follow show or book events depending on what writing partners need/prefer, but i generally write with a mixture of the two in mind… this warrants its own post but for the moment just know that he and tessarion would be doing SOMETHING during the siege of tumbleton, whether that’s scouting and eventually engaging in combat or having an instrumental role in taking tumbleton in the first place. there needs to be a reason for him to be knighted lol. ‼️
‼️it is extremely unlikely that my daeron would stand by and let ormund usurp his brother’s throne in his name if he believed either aegon or aemond were still alive. while he might not actually be able to do anything about it, ormund would get a considerably more pushback about it and he might fly away in the middle of the night lol ‼️
as in the show he doesn’t have much interest power and hates the idea of being king, but will continue fighting for the greens either because aemond isn’t dead yet OR because his nephew (maelor) has a claim to the throne. once maelor is dead he continues because he wants to kill rhaenyra and free his mother and sister, and because conceding to her out of fear of ruling would mean everyone died for nothing.
speaking of the man in the sept, that really seemed like a good set up for ormund asking him to do progressively worse things for approval until it eventually reached the point of burning bitterbridge (for which there is no good explanation without maelor), but then that went absolutely nowhere??? so i think im gonna say that that didn’t happen unless we’re working it into a plot as something that actually has consequences.
this is what’s happening with the fake daeron. in relation to my daeron, clemment is one of a half dozen or so boys that make up daeron’s little “clique” (not in like a mean or exclusive way he’s just a creature of habit) in oldtown so he certainly hates the idea, but clemment is of an age that daeron (and probably everyone else?) would consider a man so he’s ultimately willing to respect his decision and trusts that he is resourceful enough to make it through somehow.
if you read all that or even some of it here’s a gold star and a kiss on the forehead i love you ⭐💋
suddenly very nervous that s4 gwayne is gonna end up taking the place of the hightower knight who kills ulf with poisoned wine but ends up having to drink the poisoned wine and also dies........
actually ive changed my mind, this is considerably less sad than the idea of him surviving the war if daeron ends up dying so perhaps i will make this my canon........

⚔︎ · @g0dseye gets an ANGST STARTER ( NO LONGER ACCEPTING ) for gwayne. context as plotted.
BAELOR HAS NEVER BEEN FOND OF FEASTS, and even less so of the scheming lords and lickspittles they are often filled with. for years, all he has known is war — a war so devastating and crushing that it still weighs on his bones, even now. even with the crown secure on aegon’s head, the pin of the king’s hand glistening on his own chest, and vermithor safe and sound and retired from battle for what baelor hopes will be forever. the great beast has fought enough in his lifetime — as has baelor. ( after his death, he wants aegon to claim him. the king’s own dragon succumbed to his injuries a while ago, and with baelor having abandoned the thought of ever siring children and instead allowing the vale to fall to another family branch, that will be the only legacy he’ll ever have: the beloved son he never had, and the beloved dragon he never expected to gain. )
on the other end of the great hall, the light of the torches and candles falls upon gwayne hightower. his hair looks auburn in that lighting, baelor notices, and his eyes somewhere between blue and green. up close, he remembers, there are little specks of dark in it. he cannot look away.
each of his limbs is aching, and the burning sensation drags on until it reaches his ribcage. by the time his feet have brought him over to gwayne, close enough to smell his familiar scent in the air, the fire has crawled inside his ribs, piercing his heart. there had never been a time, never been a moment — and baelor was no fool, at least not foolish enough to believe a creature of such beauty and elegance could ever give itself to him in any way or form. still, he breathes in the air next to gwayne like a man drowning, gulping in what he knows will be his dying breath. they had fought side by side, won side by side [ . . . ] and yet, the victory feels hollow. baelor is not happy. ( is aegon truly happy? is anyone? or is unending grief the price one pays for winning a war? ) he’s been happiest in a dirty tent, next to gwayne in the freezing cold, nose buried in soft hair. he wants to go back there, to the simplicity of just being, of yearning for something simultaneously within reach and far out of it. ❝ mylord hightower ❞, he rasps, not bothering to hide the pain in mismatched eyes. a few times, he blinks, getting rid of the moisture. ❝ may i talk to you in private? just a moment. on the balcony, mayhaps. ❞
THE LORD OF OLDTOWN sits at the head of the table beside his betrothed, lady cassandra barratheon, an arrangement made to reward her house for their loyalty in aiding the greens in the battle of the kingsroad. his hand surely is a poor consolation prize to replace what she had been promised. ( a prince, a dragon knight, a match of suitable age. does it make it better or worse, he wonders, that her husband will never love her the way he ought? ) the days has been long, and he has played his part -- he has laughed and smiled at all the right moments, danced with his soon-to-be-wife and all of her relatives, greeted every lord and lady with the grace that befits his so suddenly elevated station -- all the while distant, what remains of the light in his eyes dimming with each passing moment of pretence. he is as dull and dead with as the halls of oldtown seem to him, now that daeron is no longer here to light them up.
the entire evening evening gwayne has avoided anything more than quick glances in lord arryn’s direction, despite the pull to do so. it isn’t him whose eyes he is avoiding, but aegon beside him and alicent to the king’s other side. his sister, in particular, he cannot face; gwayne has failed her in ways he will never sufficiently atone for. baelor stands before him now, mercifully alone, and the knot that has long been wound tight around gwayne’s lungs relents, just from looking upon him. the lord of the vale has ever been a steadying presence. ❛ i am yours as long as you need me, my lord. ❜
in truth he is glad for the excuse to slip away. with all of his guests sufficiently wine-drunk and generously fed, many of them turning in for the night himself, he may not even have to return. after leaning over to exchange a few brief words with his wife-to-be ( their conversations have yet to amount to anything beyond that, even when the setting permits ), he rises, and gestures for baelor to follow. gwayne makes for the servant’s entrance in the near corner of the room, so as not to draw excessive attention to their exit; two short flights of stairs bring them to a floor of modest guest chambers.
❛ is something amiss, my friend? ❜ he asks as he pushes open the door of a room he knows is unoccupied, though it is a poor question; everything is amiss about the situation the present situation. as soon as the door is closed behind him, he pulls the other man into a crushing embrace. there is an adjoining balcony, if baelor wishes for the fresh air, but gwayne hardly trusts himself with heights these days. ❛ what troubles you? ❜

&. CLEMMENT FLOWERS, baseborn son of ser martyn tyrell
( masterpost )
BASIC INFO.
name clemment flowers
lineage illegitimate & favorite son of ser martyn tyrell, who is one of many cousins of the infant lord lyonel tyrell, and the nephew of lord matthos tyrell, the previous lord of oldtown. his mother was martyn's lyseni lover of ambiguous ethnic heritage; clemment does not know her nor know what became of her.
born between 113 and 115 AC, timeline dependent; making him 6-8 months older than prince daeron targaryen.
appearance with blue ( not violet or purple ) eyes and light blond ( though not quite silver ) hair, clemment is, at a glance, what one would expect a targaryen prince to look like.
orientation bisexual
personality some might say deception comes naturally to him, as a bastard, given that he can talk himself out of most any situation. clemment is intelligent, kind of mouthy, arrogant, generally considered to be funny and charming, but often inconsistent / flaky ( because of an enduring fear of attachment ).
skill he lacks the combat skills coveted by boys his age, at least the “honorable” kind; he’d never do well in a tourney but can be quite scrappy if backed in a corner. in more intellectual pursuits, he learns and adapts quickly; his wit is undeniable.
summary clemment takes the place as hostage to daemon and rhaenyra, who believe he is daeron targaryen, a choice he makes to aid lord ormund’s battle plans and advance the greens’ cause. exactly how this decision is reached and how much daeron is privy to the plan will be verse / plot dependent; it could range from being clemment’s own suggestion to ormund manipulating / convincing him to agree, but he wouldn’t be forced or threatened and would feel quite strongly that it’s the right thing to do. clemment believes he is uniquely equipped to be helpful ( to daeron / to the greens as a whole ) in this particular way, which is true in many ways, as someone who knows daeron well enough to convincingly mimic his mannerisms and looks like the platonic ideal of a targaryen princeling. ( + the story that they bleached his hair and threatened to kill his mother is something he might convincingly lie about if push comes to shove, but he'd likely be able to maintain his disguise for a lot longer than the kid in the show and wouldn't be so meek and silent while doing so lol. to be clear, he knows there's a very high chance of death and does it anyway; it's not like he'd be particularly useful as a soldier, and that would be certain death. )
before the war he is a squire ( by default to my gwayne, but it could be any knight ) in oldtown, where he has lived since he was seven years old when his father was given a place at the hightower court. ( of note, martyn left his wife and trueborn children behind in highgarden; it is no secret that clemment is the favorite among his father’s children. )
a quiet hum sounds from the young prince as a way of greeting his companion, though his lavender hues still attempt to focus on the words laid out before him. there was a passage in this particular tome that he had tried to read and comprehend about a dozen times, to no avail, even before clemment appeared in the solar. the gentle hand placed on his shoulder did nothing to help the fact that his mind was elsewhere today. perhaps he was exhausted by the sheer amount of information that ormund had instructed his tutors to bestow upon him. this one, in particular, was a bit grim as clemment said. a break may do him some good.
there was truly no need to convince him. the moment clemment mentions a visit to the water, he is on his feet. "it is as if you can anticipate the exact moments in which i need you the most." a small smile adorns his lips, once pinched features softening into something more carefree. "a few hours with you will not push my studies too far behind," he murmurs, his finger tracing the title of the book once more before placing it down on the table. if he was lucky, then he would return with a fresh mind that was actually capable of retaining the information that this particular book showed him. until then, he would... relax. it is what gwayne had always suggested, at least, when he struggled to focus. and yet there was no better person to do that with then with clemment.
"shall we, then?" his head inclines towards the entryway, taking a few slow steps in that direction until the other followed. "i feel as though i have not seen much of you as of late." there were instances in which his friend would sometimes disappear for a few days at a time but daeron felt as if it were not his place to question why. if he wanted him to know then surely he would explain himself. until then, he'd be a steady rock at his side. always there when he returned. "do you think that fruit vendor will be out in the market today? she always has the best dried peaches."
𝐈𝐓 𝐈𝐒 𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐘𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐃, to be met with such patience, to be told he is needed without reprimand. daeron is steadfast and patient as ever, and yet only one thought remains to clemment beneath the warmth of his friend's gaze: i do not deserve you.
still, he cannot help but mirror a gentle smile as he moves to open the heavy wooden door of the chamber. the thought isn't a sad one, not in this moment at least, though anything else he might have wanted to say is simply gone, sure to plague him at a later time, when his attention is required elsewhere.
when daeron does not linger on the topic of his absence, clemment follows his lead more than willingly, remaining half a step behind him in the corridor, as befits their respective stations. ❛ the woman with the little black dog? i cannot recall if i saw her on my way here. ❜ and if she is not to be found at the market, clemment makes note of daeron’s affinity for the dried peaches; he will bring them as a gift another day.
once they have descended the long spiral staircase and emerged into the busy courtyard -- where it is unlikely that they will be noticed by anyone who cares for the finer details of propriety in their time spent together -- clemment falls into step side by side with daeron. ❛ i have missed you, you know, ❜ he admits, both abashed and relieved to have spoken the words. there is safety in saying it into the noise of courtyard, perhaps in the small hope that it won't actually be heard, or merely because they aren't facing one another. clemment nudges his shoulder against daeron's, the briefest of touches, but doesn't break from looking straight ahead at the path before them. he only hopes the sentiment is somehow received as the explanation it is supposed to be, not only for why he has returned but as the cause of his disappearance, too.

"No," Gwayne said with the anger and worry that only fatherhood could offer. "Aemond said he will not come to Tumbleton so why would your appearance move him? He did not come when me and my men were out there, he did not come when you and Ormund came here." He spoke desperately as he stared at the back of Daeron's head. The colour of the boy's hair was similar to his own, but exactly like Alicent's. From the his face alone, Gwayne saw his sister within his nephew and everything hurt even more.
He took a step forward, stilling then. "It is not just a fool's errand, it is death. Even if you find Aemond who says that he will not be the one to kill or hurt you? It is not so simple, it never was."
The Knight allowed a moment of peace and thought between them before he reached out to place his hand atop Daeron's shoulder.
"Perhaps," Gwayne suddenly said in a hushed whisper because no one else shall hear his treason. "We can write to Rhaenyra or Daemon. You. And Ormund will not know." His fingers tightened their grip as he urged Daeron to look back at him. "Maybe we can offer reason and terms. You said you do not care about the throne. Tell me, my boy, has that changed?"
the possibility of aemond striking him down has not been lost on the younger prince. daeron has committed treason against him, or at the very least, allowed it to continue; if he did, it would be deserved. frustration aside, daeron drops the volume of his voice to match his uncle’s, ❛ the throne is not mine to rescind, not while my brother still lives. i will not have him think me a craven as well as a traitor. ❜
with a heavy sigh, he turns to face gwayne, and tenderly places a hand upon the one that sits on his shoulder. for now, daeron refrains from reminding him that he does not need permission to take his leave. it was a mistake, he thinks, to make his uncle aware of his plans, but the thought of gwayne sick with worry when he discovered daeron’s temporary chambers empty and his dragon gone from the sept was too much to bear.
❛ we’ve long passed the time for terms, uncle. what do we have to offer them now, save for my head on a spike? ❜ enough will to live remains to daeron that he’d like to exhaust all other options first. only the gods know what ill fate has fallen upon aemond now, but daeron must know for himself before giving up on him. ❛ rhaenyra has no reason trust our word after ormund’s feigned surrender. if she showed any mercy to the last boy they thought was me, they will not make the same mistake twice. ❜
i've been back and forth on this forever but i'm gonna stick with writing rhaena as baela's twin, but with the assumption that most people treat them as if she is meaningfully younger, showing baela more outward "respect" while placing an often unfair amount of responsibility on her, and contrastingly doting on rhaena but implicitly treating her as though she is inept.
there are any number of reasons why this might be the case, but rhaena will jump to the conclusion that it's because of her lack of dragon.
❛ you could have necked me in the night, but you didn’t. ❜ // aurane & clem when they're "roomies" in KL lol
AMUSEMENT TUGS at the corner of the boy’s mouth. of all the attributes that make him an ideal candidate for the task at hand, physical prowess is not among them. there is about as much strength in clemment’s entire body as prince aurane has in his left hand; even in his sleep they are no match.
❛ doubtful i would have succeeded, ❜ he says, turning his gaze away from the window’s view of the blackwater. though marred by his sour attitude and simmering temper, aurane is so close an image of his younger brother that clemment’s chest aches just looking upon him. if daeron lives to be his age, clemment’s hope that he’ll be around to see it is ever dwindling. ❛ and you could have done the same at any other time, my prince, so i suppose we are even on that front. ❜
"My boy." Gwayne calls, sounding just a little broken. "Do you not see how you were never meant to fight such war? Please." The hand upon his shoulder grounded him momentarily as if Gwayne would actually cave in to such rushing matters.
But the knight stepped back, freeing himself off of his nephew's grasp. "It is not so simple," Gwayne stated.
"Ormund is behaving foolishly and putting many lives at stake here, including your own. That is why you must stick by my side. Ormund cannot protect you anymore. He signed your -our- execution as soon as he titled you the true King."
When he looked at Daeron, his expression was apologetic as his hands settled upon the brown strapped leather keeping his sword attached around his waist. Gwayne shook his head. "What options are we left with? I am nearly tempted to let you fly away with Tessarion. . . But even then, they would hunt you down, Daeron."
Gwayne saw no exit or plans to efficiently work. He somehow could smell the blood from afar; hightower blood and tumbleton ruin. Despite it all, he did not wish to break his nephew's heart and mind much like Ormund did, unwilling or not.
"Do not play hero for what Ormund has done. Will you have me beg, Daeron?"
my boy. the words prod the lost child within who so yearns for a parent’s love. it feels like a cheap trick, but it is not ormund who stands before him now. gwayne has always been sincere in his affection, and daeron hurts all the more for it. his arm drops to his side, pulling forth a defeated exhale as gwayne backs away from him.
❛ neither of us will survive the week’s end if we remain sitting ducks. how do you intend to protect me from rhaenyra and her forces? from daemon and his blood wyrm? ❜ daeron asks, hands tucked behind the small of his back as he walks toward the window where honeyed evening light sends long shadows spilling across the stone floor. ❛ already i have dithered too long. i should have sought my brother out the moment ormund named me king. ❜
countless nights since then the weight of betraying his own blood has kept him from sleep. aemond was his hero as a boy, and even still there is a naive part of him steadfast to the notion that his brother will arrive on dragonback just in time to save them. ( and that he will forgive daeron, in the end, when he does. )
❛ we’ve a few days still before the black army is upon us. ❜ riding gloves tucked into his belt and a small satchel atop the desk betray his intention; all he now awaits is darkness. ❛ it is a fool’s errand, i know, but i must try. aemond will know what to do. ❜
