Quick Editing Tip: Down & Up
The words âdownâ and âupâ are often unnecessary and can be edited out of your writing. More often than not, their meaning is implied in the words theyâre attached to.
Before:
I sat down on the couch.
After:
I sat on the couch.
Down is implied in the verb âsit,â so itâs unneeded. Same thing goes for âupâ in many cases:
Before:
I stood up.
After:
I stood.
Unless youâre a soldier, you probably arenât going to âstand down,â so you can safely omit the âup.â
Of course, there are times when the words âdownâ or âupâ are necessary. A quick test to see if theyâre needed is just to delete them. If the sentence still makes sense without them, youâre good to go. If not, put them back in.
Hope this helps!

Expanding the reach of âdoes this still make senseâ to the entire paragraph or scene is sometimes crucial. Delete the word, check to see if the sentence still works, then perhaps check the rest of the passage. Based on experience.
