Major Project - 'Fisk'
This was my final third year design project, which marked the end of my university degree at Northumbria University. I graduated with a First Class Honours (BA) degree in Interior Design.
For this project, I was required to designate a suitable site, establish the function of the building and design the interior space as well as creating a brand. I also produced design proposition, research and feasibility documents to ensure the viability of the project.
Design Rationale
Fisk, located on the rugged North East British coastline, combines a diverse fish market, enlightening cooking classes and a sophisticated fish restaurant to create an idyllic and inspiring sensory experience for it’s customers. Saltburn pier entrance building is the chosen site for this venture, providing sweeping views of the North Sea, whilst enhancing the nautical nature of the project.
In keeping with the maritime location and the historic nature of the Victorian timber pier building, a sense of raw simplicity has been maintained throughout the building’s interiors. The use of unfinished materials such as concrete, timber and steel adds to the industrial, nautical feel of the interior, whilst frosted glass with a bespoke illustrative pattern enhances the sense of depth, reflecting the transient layers of the North Sea.
Fisk aims to be a supportive pillar to the town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, by providing not only retail, leisure and hospitality to it’s residents, but also by recomposing a sense of community for the local fishing industry, which has declined considerably through the past century. By supplying sustainably caught North Sea fish to the establishment, fishermen will ensure the highest quality of fresh fish is bought and cooked throughout the building.
