If thereâs one word Gabriel associates with his childhood, itâs ânostalgiaâ. Not many members of the Steinberg family survived WWII or stayed in Poland after its end but even his parents, born in the early 1940s, longed for the times they couldnât possibly remember; for the late 19th century when Szlomo Sztajnberg, Gabrielâs great-grandfather, had his famous shop on the main street of ĹĂłdĹş. Almost one hundred years later, when Gabriel was born, the famous haberdasherâs shop no longer existed, just like the local Jewish community in its bygone form. But there was a small flat in an old tenement in downtown area and enough determination to try recreating the atmosphere that had already been gone forever. Gabriel and his twin brother - Jeremiasz - were living surrounded by dusty books and slightly shabby antiques, raised by people that maybe didnât know how to answer most of the difficult questions and couldnât afford much more than basic needs but there was no doubt about love and care being essential values for the family.
Despite all the desperate attempts to stay in ĹĂłdĹş and never give up in a fight against the inimical local community that felt like letting all the remaining Jews know that they should leave the country just like their friends did over a decade ago, it was impossible to keep battling. Introduction of the martial law lengthened the process of getting all the permissions and visas but when it ended in 1983, the whole family moved to Toronto where Gabrielâs aunt had been living for the last thirty years. Adapting to a completely new situation, country and language wasnât as hard for the very young boys as it was for their parents but complaining about it would be senseless, regarding everything that had been going on before they managed to leave Poland. Life had to go on somehow and, with Mrs. Steinbergâs sisterâs invaluable help, it did because even though the family loved to argue about everything, its members also knew how to stay strong and united.
Regardless of all the problems and financial shortages, education had always been a priority for Gabrielâs parents. It required a lot of effort but ended up with both of their sons starting medical studies at University of Toronto in the mid-90s. Even though Gabriel isnât very proud of that, becoming a doctor wasnât purely a vocation to dedicate his life to other people. It was also about prestige and following his grandfatherâs path which meant a lot to his parents but also to Gabriel himself. Leaving motivations aside, he knew that med school was a challenge, even for a hard-working young man that had his priorities set right. And he wasnât wrong because his way to the graduation ceremony couldnât be called smooth and trouble-free but at the end of the day it was all worth the struggle. During the third year of studying, Gabriel decided that operating rooms, great discoveries and huge successes werenât really that exciting for him. He wanted a job that could provide adrenaline rush and multifariousness which made him leave the big plans of becoming a neurosurgeon behind and switch to emergency medicine. To be honest, he also realized that for an average student it wasnât really possible to become an exceptional specialist in such a challenging field. And heâs far away from being ashamed about that or feeling like heâd failed.
Now, over a decade later, Gabrielâs living in Montreal where he moved together with his brother in 2006. Being that close to their parents was a good thing for many reasons but both of them needed some separation from the loving family to fully grow up and start their own lives. And it worked, surprisingly. Even though there was enough tough moments to make them both want to run back to mama and never again think that it was a good idea to move out. But at the end of the day, it was a great decision to start living on their own. Just like the decision to move to separate apartments after three years and to come out to their parents was.
Gabriel is very vivacious and active, sometimes to the point of it being burdensome for the people around him. Which, unfortunately, doesnât stop him from expecting everyone to have that much energy to spend. His hyperactive nature tends to be annoying even for himself because itâs great while working for twenty four hours without a break longer than fifteen minutes or running on two hours of sleep during a weekend trip but when falling asleep is a challenge, itâs no longer fun. Gabriel is very straightforward which also has its pros and cons because regardless of all the problems he avoids by speaking his mind, âslightly rudeâ is still most peopleâs opinion about him. And itâs hard to disagree with that but on the other hand, heâs far away from being mean or hostile on purpose. Gabriel is extremely proud and respectful when it comes to his descent and family, sometimes to the point of being irritable. Heâs also very religious but after moving out of Toronto, his approach towards religion changed a bit and became more personal.
