Soaking up summer
I can’t believe July is almost over and there are only a few weeks left of summer break. We’ve been having a blast playing hard this year, but every once in a while it’s equally enjoyable to just sit back and soak up the warm rays of that Texas sun (assuming plenty of SPF/hat/sunglasses/rashguard etc are protecting our translucent skin, of course).
“Which hand is it in?” -- the kiddos found some quarters in my bag while we were at the pool today and immediately started brushing up on their magic tricks. I swear these two could entertain one another in a paper bag.

Veterans Memorial Pool
I never thought we’d bother venturing out to Austin’s public pools given we are lucky enough to have a private pool right in our backyard. Then a friend showed me pictures of some of the ones around town and we decided to finally go see what all the excitement was about ourselves.
Game. Changer.
These are not merely “pools.” They’re really more like mini water parks with extremely affordable admission, and they are perfect for the preschool crowd. I think I paid a grand total of $7 to get three of us into this pool at Veterans Memorial Park for the day. And we limited ourselves to the kiddie area, but there are a few other pools with water slides for the bigger kids, as well.
If I am being totally honest, it’s definitely a little harder than just stepping out your own back door, but not by much. You have to watch your kids more closely since it’s somewhat crowded and there are bigger kids trampling over the littler ones. Going to the bathroom isn’t as easy as being able to pee behind the shed at home (shhhh don’t tell). Getting snacks or drinks takes a little more pre-planning. And it’s definitely annoying (and gross) when not even seconds after you first arrive, the pool is cleared for 30 minutes due to POOP. Ugh!
But once you get over that disgust, and the initial effort of just getting into the car and driving somewhere, a visit to one of these public pools is definitely worth the trip. Toddler Gaga thoroughly enjoyed testing out four of the water slides in the kiddie area and Baby Gagette loved the water fountain features and zero entry ramp. While I still love how easy and convenient it is to swim in our own pool, it’s fun to shake things up every now and then. We will definitely be back, but probably not until we’ve toured some of the other pools around town first!

Toddler Gaga, the boy who can never slow his mind. Lately he wakes up in the middle of the night asking me to jot down his ideas for book titles. It’s been over 4.5 years since I’ve slept through the night. Someday...

“We’re in a ‘RADE!!!!” -- these two felt like VIP celebrities participating in the neighborhood Independence Day parade today. I hope their enthusiasm for the big and small things in life continues on as they grow.
Week 26/52
“Can we sleep here tonight?!” -- these two aren’t quite as little as they used to be, however, they thought it was pretty funny that they both still fit in the bassinet they slept in as newborns.
Week 25/52
“Mommy, look! We made ourselves look beautiful before bed.” -- anything to stall bedtime with these two future stylists / partners in crime.
It’s been a historic, drought-ending month of rain here in Texas. The kiddos have really enjoyed getting to use all the adorable gear they received around Christmastime. Here, Toddler Gaga wanted to race outside to see how many raindrops he could trap in his umbrella, however, we quickly lost count.

Just keep swimming -- it’s a whole new ballgame with the pool and these little fishies this year. So much fun and it’s not even officially summer yet!

Labor Day Weekend 2015 -- staying out past our bedtimes for post dinner frozen custard and tree climbing on a perfect summer night.
Pro tip: when your wrists are tiny enough to fit inside a toilet paper roll, you can make your own homemade Wonder Woman costume! Baby girl glowed with pride after figuring this one out all on her own today.
