You actually cannot skip to being good at a creative endeavour that you haven't put much practice into. You cannot trick your way out of the 'knows that your work is not what you want it to be but don't know how to improve it' stage by planning or reading or talking about it really really hard. At some point you just have to craft through it until your brain finds it's own unique way back to the 'everything I make slaps' stage and be prepared to start the cycle all over again. You just have to make that project you're excited about slightly less good than you want it to be. (Says this standing in a pool of blood and covered in blood and also coughing up a little blood)

Decided to do a Warehouse 13 re-watch for the hell of it... and I'm laughing at the scene where Pete is shocked and excited by a farnsworth's "two way video communication". Like I know this was made pre-smartphones but I don't think it was made pre-Skype? Sure it's impressive that it's in so small a package at that time, and impressive that it was apparently invented right after television, but c'mon man. It's not a huge jump. Or maybe it just feels silly to me because in less than ten years or so two-way video communication becomes so normal and widespread.

OP I don't know how old you are - I am old enough to remember the advent of the internet and of mobile phones, as well as Skype/video calling.

And in 2009, when Warehouse premiered, Skype was very much a "local desktop connected to LAN or at best WLAN" option, and not ubiquitous in every household at that. The notion of not just having a small handheld device for video calling but one that didn't need to be connected physically to the internet *was* wild, and while yes, Pete's excitement reads nostalgic and over the top these days, it wasn't undue back then. That really was out-there tech, even if we caught up with it a few years later.

See also the phones they're using - those aren't smartphones yet, far from it. Those are just your regular old mobile phone bricks, with not a single sparkle gleam of video calling in anyone's eye. Maybe with Snake or rudimentary email or WAP but that was it.

FaceTime didn’t come out until 2010, and wouldn’t have been that great when it first released. I was an adult by then, actually my first smartphone was the 3S but I don’t really remember. It would have been quite blocky and pixelated with jumpy framerate etc. and that would have been over Wi-Fi. It was 3G back then if you were lucky, 4G wasn’t a thing and 5G is only last couple of years.

I agree it’s a little funny watching Pete’s excitement and knowing that within a year of the 2009 Warehouse release, smartphones would be a thing. I feel like that’s why they explained towards the end of season 2 the extra benefits - no signal issues, can use even deep underground etc.

Technology has come a fair way in the last… oh Merlin 17 years 😬 though I FaceTime with mum most days and even on WiFi I’ll still get the “your signal is unstable” message if mum wanders too far from the router. When she calls me in the car (don’t worry her husband is driving) then it’s back to the blocky pixel jumpy frames most of the time, and the connection will randomly drop completely, or sometimes just can’t call at all. So the Farnsworth is still the superior system 😉

Does anyone have any headcanons or fic recs for when Helena's attempts at getting Christina back caused the death of an agent? That moment must have been delved into in the fandom loads of times, and potentially borrowing or building upon someone else's idea would be more convenient than coming up with the idea whole cloth (unless I happen to come up with an idea of my own that fits with the rest of the story)

My current fave is that said agent stumbled upon Helena as she was about to use the time machine for the umpteenth time. He caught on to what she was doing and tried to gently persuade her that that wasn't a good way of coping; she, having now witnessed her daughter's death a dozen times over, was in no mood to hear it. Crazed and hurting, she laid into him with words; he took it as further evidence that she wasn't well, and tried to physically restrain her from using the machine again.

She killed him.

(for added angst I want to say it wasn't even an accident, like shoving someone and they fall badly and hit their head - I want to say that *in that moment* she absolutely wanted to kill. Not him personally/specifically, but him as an obstacle that stood between her and saving her daughter.)

(more angst: this didn't stop her, not then. She tried the time machine again (for however many times we want to torture her with), and it took her being completely spent before she would stop trying to save Christina - so she stumbles away from the time machine, utterly beaten and anguished, and then she sees his crumpled form, just lying there. The memory comes back that yes, it was her who killed him.)

And that's what made her think of herself as a danger, and ask to be bronzed.

That’s a really good (well bad because it hurts) headcanon. Like the tragedy, the crazed heartbreak, the anguish, the pain. Not Wooley though right? Not Wooley? 🥺

Personally I wonder… as my take on it. I think the line was something like “twice the regents caught me, and twice they were lenient but the third time led to the death of an agent” and HG said “I worked in a place of endless wonder” and while I am not a fan of season 5, or most of the whole Paracelsus thing the idea of combining artifacts is one I have knocked about in my brain.

It has occurred to me that the issue of HG’s Time Machine being a “viewer” rather than able to change anything, could be because of the tether to the body. That you can’t do anything in the past that would change the future, because of the paradox. The you wouldn’t be sitting in that chair using the Time Machine to go back, so the past couldn’t change, and so the you would be sitting there etc. Therefore in order to change things you’d need to break that chain. Find an artifact that can separate the consciousness from the body. Go back and HG could essentially possess her past self the very day she had originally decided to send Christina to France for the summer and just not send her. If Christina was never there, then there can’t be any burglars expecting an empty house and finding Christina instead.

I can see how experimenting to find something that would work like that could go wrong.

I put this in the comments while I was scrolling past, but I have time to make it a proper reblog, so I shall.

I was thinking about this episode recently! At the end, Myka assumes they're going to arrest the bank robbers, but Pete stops her, says their only goal is to get the record back and the thieves should be allowed to take their chances. He understands that while what they did was "wrong," they had a reason, and that matters to him.

Then a year later, Myka meets Helena--a woman who has done many things wrong, known and unknown, but she had a reason. And because of Pete's influence, Myka allows that to matter to her.

Pete, knowing what a hardass Myka is, knowing her judgement is both harsh and sound, trusts her over his own vibes, something he has only once before done, ever.

They're both wrong, and both right, and either way, Bering and Wells never happens without the love and trust that exists between Pete and Myka.
