No Snakes, Yes Snakes
It’s No Snakes Tuesday
It’s Yes Snakes Thursday
only 62 more frogs until we hit 8,000 species described. the moment we've all been waiting for
there are an average of about 150 new amphibian species described per year so I remain hopeful that 2026 will be the year of 8,000 frogs
I do love that somebody tagged tumblr's own frog scientist on this post. chop chop dr scherz, we've got 62 more frogs to discover and you're the only frog scientist any of us knows
happy world frog day, 50 frogs to go until we hit 8,000 species described!!
@markscherz
There is a small but real chance I will get to Do The Thing. Watch this space.
Everyone prepare the Frog Rave, which shall be the opposite of the Crab Rave, unleashed when someone on tumblr that we like does something nifty.

Not to sound like a decrepit, rambling corpse about it, but back in my day Word used to be a pre installed program that came with your computer, if you were running Windows.
No subscription. Just program.
On your computer. You got to use it forever and ever and never had to worry about it going away.
Because it was physically on your computer. As a program. That you actually owned. Not because you got it separately, but because it was a standard inclusion with your computer.
I'm sorry but I'll just never get over it. I remember when companies cared about their products being usable out of the box. I remember when our things belonged to us.

This has gone beyond "I cannot explain this to my spouse" and is firmly in "Archaeologists of the future will decide this is the point at which a group of people diverged from mainstream humanity and developed a new, indecipherable form of communication."
everyone say thank you ao3 volunteers you're the best ao3 volunteers ily ao3 volunteers
It’s back online
Human beings are predictable, people rarely surprise you.
WAREHOUSE 13 "For the Team"
Attended a rattlesnake conference yesterday and one of the presenters was talking about public attitudes towards snakes, specifically how showing them in a non-aggressive context helps to create more positive attitudes, and. Y'all. I NEED to show you the image he used as an example
Look at him. Look at this smiley newborn sidewinder sitting in a bottle cap. He is so small and so happy he is EXACTLY the right size to sit comfortably in a bottle cap

“why are you, as someone in their 30s, still on tumblr” oh so you think you’re gonna be normal when you’re my age? you think you’re gonna be CURED?? you think the witches’ curse will have been lifted by then?? cmon now
That really is how being in your 30s is like 😭
Introductions to academic papers will be like "everyone knows that the sea is cold (citation), as well as salty (5 different citations). Things live in there (citation) and the environment is important to that (2 citations)"
let me be clear when i say that this is objectively a good thing btw. not everyone who opens the paper is gonna be on the same level even if some of these things are obvious and from a narrative stand point or whatever it works as a baseline before you start yapping about your thing to get everyone on the level.
also like. we thought that nothing lived in the deep sea until the 1860s (edward forbes azoic hypothesis). maybe theres a vampire who hasn't caught up yet
I saw this post and not 5 minutes later found myself reading this paper about the universality of music that had this in the abstract:
