— summary : in which reader gets lost in hogwarts and the hufflepuff prefect helps.
you ran through the barren corridors in the large school, the remainder of your fellow students already in their designated lessons. regret had flooded your emotions as you began to have a conscience about your overly optimistic decision to have a mere five minutes extra in bed. as anyone could predict, those five minutes ended up being much much longer.
even though you had gotten more sleep than you bargained for, the sudden rush and adrenaline that circulated in your body as you hurried to get changed and eagerly run to your first (luckily, not your second) lesson, causing you to sprint absent-mindedly down the school halls and turning corners hoping that they successfully get you to your destination as soon as possible.
soon enough, your keenness inevitably led you to a corridor in the school that you have never come across before. you came to an abrupt halt as realisation dawned on you, not waiting much longer before you bluntly began to make a sharp u-turn. once you turned, you banged into a person that had suddenly appeared near you.
your books fell out of your grip and you had to quickly steady yourself otherwise you would have fallen to the ground.
“oh gosh, i’m so sorry…” you quickly apologised as you started to crouch down to collect your belongings off the floor.
“no, it’s fine. here, let me help you.” the boy followed in pursuit and assisted.
as the two of you were gathering your hoard of books, your fingertips accidentally brushed over each other’s and electricity began to flow through your veins. you recognised this boy instantly; it was none other than cedric diggory, a hufflepuff prefect and hogwarts’ golden boy. practically every student knew of him. you’d only ever seen him from a distance and never had the chance to appreciate his piercing blue eyes and his soft brown hair that complemented his appearance entirely. soon, you found yourself quickly looking back down at the remainder of the books on the floor in order to break the intense eye contact as you began to stutter when you next spoke.
“oh, yeah, thank you. i’ll try to, erm, take better notice of my surroundings in future.” cedric chuckled lightly at your statement. the pair of you stood up and he kindly passed your books back to you. you shyly remade eye contact with the hufflepuff as the conversation began to unfold.
“it’s hardly your fault. i shouldn’t have stood so close to you without your knowledge — an accident was bound to happen.” he shrugged. you gave a small nod in response. “though i do have one question,” he began once more, worry beginning to wash over you slightly, “what are you doing out in the corridors during lesson time?”
“oh, i may or may not have accidentally over slept and now i appear to have found myself in a part of hogwarts that i’m unfamiliar with. the past fifteen minutes have been sort of a blur, really.” you gave out a low and awkward titter in hope to slightly whitewash and humour your stupidity of the morning. you gave a mental sigh of relief when cedric, once again, let out a friendly chuckle.
“typically, as a prefect, i should be scolding you for your lack of decent time management and your absence in lesson,” he smiled, “but your beauty has convinced me to let you off the hook.” you could feel your cheeks heat up and knew that they were displaying an embarrassing amount of red blush at cedric’s unexpected, but nonetheless appreciated, compliment.
“oh, erm, thank you so much.” you stumbled. cedric’s grin widened as he watched you avert your eyes, looking anywhere but at him.
“though, i suppose i could ask you what you are also doing out of lesson, diggory.” you quickly stated, eager to change the conversation topic, hoping you sounded tough. your eyes now looking back into his cheerful ones.
“i was escorting a lost first year to their lesson just here. but apparently he wasn’t the only lost student this morning…” his voice trailed off, as though he was beginning to analyse how you would respond. again, embarrassment consumed you as you realised that you had admitted your silly mistake regarding sleep to the ever so handsome boy in front of you. “perhaps i could escort you to your lesson, if you’d like? which class are you supposed to be in?” cedric continued.
“that would be appreciated, thank you.” you spoke, you’re voice awkwardly squeaky as you answered the sudden question, “divination.” the grip you had on your books tightened as you wished this conversation would now end swiftly.
“we’re not far from the divination classroom actually… it’s this way.” and so cedric began to walk by your side as you allowed him to lead you to the classroom. as the adrenaline that filled your veins began to calm and as cedric ushered you closer to your destination, you came to recognise your surroundings. but you couldn’t bring yourself to mention that you were now no longer lost in fear that cedric would then leave you too soon. shortly, the two of you came to a halt as you reached the entrance of the divination classroom. cedric turned to face you.
“thank you,” you said, “i just can’t believe that after six years of attending this school, i’m still getting lost.” you hung your head low in defeat.
“don’t worry, it happens to the best of us.” cedric reassured.
“well, i better go in, i don’t want to be even more late than i already am.” you slowly began to saunter your way towards the classroom.
“yes…” cedric answered, he looked as though he had more to say. you placed your hand on the ladder when he spoke up. “i think i’d like to see you again and get to know you more.”
“oh,” you snapped your head back around to look at him so fast that your neck began sting, “i’d very much like that too.” cedric smiled in triumph.
“great. i’ll catch you around sometime, then.” he beamed as he began to step backwards, “however, i realise that i don’t know your name.”
“y/n.” cedric quietly repeated your name after you, looking pleased as he did so.
you both bid each other your farewells, and soon cedric disappeared back down the north tower. you began to ascend up the ladders into the classroom, your heart beating rapidly. however, you couldn’t help but feel disheartened about the uncertainty around getting to know cedric better. but for now, you tried to focus on what to tell professor trelawney when you reached the classroom.
