Nope. Fictional characters cannot be hurt. They have no existence outside our imaginations. Fetishize fictional characters to your heart’s content. No one is holding a gun to anyone’s head to force them to read the fic or look at the art, and people can do whatever they want to fictional characters while at the same time treating real live actual people with respect.

Yes, fictional characters are fictional but let’s not act like this kind of behaviour is restricted to ao3 or easy to avoid and that it doesn’t have a negative impact on real lgbtqia people.

I am a queer writer in the Harry Potter fandom and I regularly have people message me saying that they love what I’ve done with their “gay trash babies” and linking me to their own writing. That’s not me searching it out, that’s the language some pockets of fandom has developed where it’s ok to reduce lgbtqia people to a kink or fetish.

So yeah, fictional characters are fictional but representation is a thing and impacts real people.
