Around 1905, Gustav Klimt began spending his summers at the Attersee, painting gardens like this one. No figures, no gold leaf, no mythology. Just flowers packed so densely that the canvas feels almost alive.

In “Farm Garden with Sunflowers”, depth nearly disappears. Sunflower heads rise from a mass of green while red and pink blooms crowd every corner of the picture. Klimt isn’t interested in leading your eye into the distance. He wants you to stay right here, surrounded by color. The longer you look, the more the garden feels less like a landscape and more like its own living world.

Together they create a holy space of rest in the middle of an increasingly hostile world that persecutes them: for their faith, their sexuality, and because both women are trans.

John Singer Sargent, 1856-1925, American.  Man Reading, Nicola d’Inverno, 1904-1908, oil on canvas, 25¼ x 22¼ in.

Nicola D’Inverno was a 19-year-old Italian immigrant and amateur boxer who knocked on Sargent’s door seeking work in 1892. He stayed with the artist for 25 years. Hired initially to model, D’Inverno became Sargent's studio manager, valet, and frequent travel companion.

While Sargent never explicitly confirmed his romantic relationships, art historians widely consider D’Inverno one of his muses, primary subjects for private male nudes, and a strong candidate for being one of his lovers. The duo lived in close quarters for decades until 1917, when D'Inverno was dismissed following a bar fight in Boston.

John Singer Sargent, 1856-1925, American.  Nude Study of Thomas E. McKeller, between 1917 and 1920, oil on canvas, 49 1/2 x 33 1/4 in. 

Sargent met Thomas Eugene McKeller, 34 years Sargent’s junior, an African American elevator attendant, at Boston’s Hotel Vendome. McKeller posed for most of the figures—both male and female—in Sargent’s murals in the Museum of Fine Arts.
