My head canon is that Sanae wasn’t raised by Kanako and Suwako, but she spent a lot of time at the shrine because they treated her better than her actual parents. She probably went to Gensokyo because she had no attachments to the modern world. Her parents were overbearing and demanded nothing but the best, and she couldn’t connect with her classmates. The goddesses at the shrine offered her an out, and she took it. She was a shrine maiden, so why not go to a place where she could feel like that status was appreciated? There isn’t much to leave behind if you don’t feel wanted by your family and peers.

She traded a stressful life for a real family.

Tea? Inside? Come inside? For tea? Invitation? Socialization? What a twist! To think that giving a girl chocolate would spark up a conversation! It was the chocolate, of course! Not the shouting. Or the blushing. Definitely wasn’t the unexplained “friend chocolate” wording either. None of those things! Just the chocolate. Obviously.

Poorly drawn conclusions aside, there was still the matter of answering Reimu’s question. Gawking is a bit of a social faux pas, or at least Kanako always said so. “O-oh. Um, yes, of course. I’d love to!” Nailed it! She didn’t even embarrass herself this time! Of course, she isn’t moving, despite having accepted the invite...
