New painting from member Joanie Krug! Follow her on Facebook to see all of her latest work.
"This lady started out as a rather stiff portrait, very geometiric and cubist. I went to bed last night unsure whether I would even continue to work on it, and this morning decided to start over. But, the scraping revealed something, I can't exactly say what, and I responded by attacking the board in a fury with my crayons. I had no idea if I was destroying the painting or recovering it. Then, it just took off from there. It now has an overlay of unleashed energy. No background yet and no ideas for that yet. I might let it dry and leave that for another trip." - Gallery 114 member David Slader

Gallery 114 is proud to partner with Deskhub, located at NW 11th and Flanders. Deskhub offers three floors of collaboration areas for entrepreneurs and creative space for events. You may remember them saving the day last month when a broken pipe flooded our space. They have once again made part of their work space available to us for satellite shows. Three gallery members, Jon Gottshall, Al Stone, and David Slader, are now exhibiting in the space. We look forward to our association with our new neighbors and friends!

Artist Statement
My work attempts to capture the essence of the vibratory energy exchanged during human interaction. As our interactions with each other and the world become more abstracted by the use of technology, the presence of feeling begins to dissipate and transform. We are attracted or repelled in a way that expands beyond the base human condition, sight, sound, smell, sense and we form connections with a broader scope of like minds to form a global webbing of communication. My work seeks to capture the essence of the fourth dimensional intuitive sensing of each other, call it vibes, and transmute it into a two dimensional representation. I work with imperfect symmetry and a flatlanding of the human condition. I then build these characters into detailed paper cut mandalas. The mandalas have an essence of organic flowering when viewed from a distance and a sense of organized chaos when viewed up close. The submission pieces are layers of cut paper prints made from a collating of my illustrations.
"I enjoy a good story. Most of my paintings are what I call 'abstract narratives.' I think of them as illustrations separated from their text. I hope each viewer wonders, 'What IS going on here?'"
- Curtis Settino
