Spilled coffee on her thumb painfully brings her back to reality. Clearing her throat ( 𝙳𝙴𝙵𝙸𝙽𝙴 : clearing her thoughts ) , she sets two cups on the newly bought table , coasters meant to accompany their cups sat haphazardly forgotten on her kitchen counter. It’s hard to keep her head on straight when she’s never really there. ❝ It’s been a while , ❞ Said more like a fact than an admittance of guilt. She bears the blame , knows her connections would fare better if she stayed put for more than a month , but life had other plans for her that she had no intention of stopping. She’s a pawn and invisible hands lead her from square to square.

She doesn’t remember the last call she had picked up that hadn’t been from Benny , Beltik or anyone else who she considered part of her tight knit team. She only had so many minutes of her time to spare these days , and their conversations would sometimes span hours she couldn’t take back. New York was no vacation either , a match in a week’s time and that Wednesday evening was the only one she could spare for rekindling. ❝ I just got a little [ . . . ] ❞ Occupied dancing with death. I don’t see Beth having ever dressed up for Halloween. Not because she doesn’t like the idea but because her imagination is very linear. She’s not one to fantasize and even when she does it’s very practical, very much real life. If she’s dressed up it’s always a niche artist or chess player and she tries to explain it people once but when they don’t get it she’ll make up another costume explanation on the spot. Usually something more morbid like “I’m dressed like the death of joy, can’t you see?”
𝙱𝙴𝚃𝙷 : & 𝙳𝙴𝙰𝚃𝙷
beth never gets a chance to deal with death in a healthy fashion. when her mother dies, she’s in shock. she’s young, but not so young that she doesn’t understand the permanence of death. she’s young, but no so young that she doesn’t understand that her mother’s death was intentional. she never did close her eyes when her mother told her too. but she’s left with the question of why, and never does it get answered throughout her lifetime. why did her mother seek death, and why did she think it would be a good outcome for both of them. she never gets to bury her mother, there’s no funeral. instead she’s whisked away to a new place where they strip her of her clothes and tell her she needs to conform. beth never gets the chance to mourn, and instead is left with an empty feeling she doesn’t know how to fix except with the pills. and she tries so hard to no avail until she’s introduced to chess.
in chess, no one can hurt you but yourself.
alma’s death is one she doesn’t see coming and she hates herself for it. so engulfed in her own life and what she was doing that she doesn’t notice the way alma gets sick. she doesn’t stay to help her, she assumes a man she just met will be enough for her adoptive mother. she mourns for alma, but not long. once again, she focuses on chess and loses herself in the black and white world. she doesn’t give herself time to grief and that’s what leads to her eventual spiral.
it’s only shaibel’s death that she really lets herself feel. she lets herself go because it’s too much to hold onto. she’s a bottle about to crack, and with the support of a friend, she feels safe enough to let her emotions flow.
