Booktok & Anti-intellectualism:

With all the talk about anti-intellectualism on TikTok recently I wanna share something that I've been thinking about for a while.

I've noticed in recent years that the publishing industry, writers and even some readers have turned books into fast-fashion; what used to take writers years to achieve (coming up with a good book that includes plot twists, complex characters, character development, pacing that fits the story, amazing quality, good writing style, no grammar mistakes and a well edited literary work) now takes only a few months or a year with barely any thought put into the work and only a focus on popular tropes and how to market them towards consumers.

With the rise of booktok and many non-readers getting into that space and discovering books for the first time, we have lost the nuance of what a well written book should include and have now turned it into something to be consumed for the sake of consumption instead of for the sake of pure entertainment, knowledge, analysis and interacting with the written text.

I've seen a lot of readers say that they skim through the text or even skip "long" paragraphs just so they can read the dialogue (I even saw someone on tiktok admit to reading just the dialogue). This is where my question comes, when did we lose the ability to actually enjoy reading outside of certain tropes and only wanting to reach the good parts so we skip literal paragraphs? And why do we have to add smut and romance to most books (not the romance genre obviously) in order to market the book as "enemies to lovers" or what not so that we can actually lure readers into buying the book instead of actually marketing what the book is about a.k.a the plot?

[Note: I'm someone who enjoys reading romance so I'm not judging nor am I calling romance a "lesser genre" or "cheap" as I've seen some people say on TikTok as a way to attack people making this point.]

My point is, people nowadays seek tropes instead of actual good plots, storyline, character development, characters that are diverse and different instead of the same carbon copy of recycled characters that we see marketed these days. The term anti-intellectualism isn't used to insult anyone, it's just used to point out how some people are out there recommending books that are poorly written as "the best thing they've ever read" just because they enjoyed it (enjoying a book does not mean it was well written, it just means that you enjoyed it because you found it interesting or it had something that you like). All I want is for people to realize that there's a huge difference between a good book and their own subjective opinion since there are certain literary standards that writers must follow for their book to be considered a good literary work.

I'm interested to hear other people's thoughts about this as well and hear different opinions so if you have anything to add or you don't agree with anything I said, I'd like to see what you think.

I became an atiny by the end of 2025 and I spent the last few weeks getting into their lore (thanks to @atiny-for-life), I read all the diary entries, watched all mvs, read/watched some theories and analysis, and I desperately need to talk to someone about the lore.

It genuinely made me want to read a dystopian book but ateez's world is so unique that I don't think I'll be able to find anything that comes close to it (KQ release a damn book already). I'm so excited for golden hour part 4, partially because it's my first cb, but also because we're getting more of the lore and possibly a new world with the halazia crew.

No animated movie can top Anastasia when it comes to romance. Enemies to lovers check, grumpy x sunshine check, lost princess check, lots of banter check, I hate everyone but you check. Like what else do we need. They even got the walking down the stairs with a pretty dress and his eyes are only watching her part like.

I just saw a tiktok that made me rethink everything I know about jacks and eva.

So we all know how tella is jacks' one true love right, but she basically chose legend over him even though for jacks tella was supposed to love him and be with him. Well the girl in that tiktok said that jacks has a curse which is tella being his one true love but since his one true love chose another that means that jacks could either let this curse ruin his entire life or he could do what his one true love did and CHOOSE who he actually loves. Which he did without eva's knowledge.

So this got me thinking, what if jacks choosing eva is what breaks his curse and now he isn't tied to tella and can actually be with eva without killing her with his kiss. And if that is the case this also means that each fate has the power to break their own curse so lala could finally be a bride without her husbands dying in the process and same for each fate.

Besides we know that in this universe each story has the potential for infinite endings and Stephanie said that curse has bonus scenes with different endings which means that there could be an ending where jacks breaks the curse and is finally with eva and another where he doesn't and she can never be with him cause he wouldn't allow it as he wouldn't want to hurt her in any way.

Stephanie just said there would be alternate endings for ACFTL (in the special editions) so does this mean we could witness sad and brutal endings or what!! I'm scared

Isn't weird how when writing fantasy, sci-fi or dystopian you're basically building a whole new world with different countries, ideologies, history and societal struggles. It's just so fascinating and beautiful when you think about it. All the hard work, time and thoughtfulness put into this little book just so that a random stranger could enjoy it. It's such a beautiful thing.

Why is world building and planning a novel harder than actually writing the book?!?! Like I've been planning for this amazing idea that i have and when i was finally done with it i just felt unmotivated to write from how long it took me to world build.
