“Judge me by my size, do you?”
Have the FR devs ever confirmed the number of Sornieth’s moons, assuming the planet has at least one?
At festival times, I like to contemplate headcanons related to the flight being celebrated. I think the Tidelord, being god of the tides, would be associated with the moon in coastal areas; folklore might present the moon as a crystal ball or scrying orb through which the Tidelord might survey the surface of Sornieth from the depths of the ocean.
well, according to an old weekly Q&A post, sornieth has…… ‘one to two moons.’ which…? is oddly ambiguous? for some reason? (is it that difficult to look up and count moons? idk. i’d say go with two, cause if there were only one, surely the second wouldn’t be mentioned at all?)
Maybe there is one celestial object that is definitely a moon, and one that looks like a moon but appears and disappears at irregular intervals or in different places. The astrological impact of this object is the topic of much speculation even in the Starfall Isles.
Spiritcallers have devised a peculiar language of whistles that can be employed to telekinetically control this deadly weapon.
Okay FR tag I've got a favor to ask:
Give me your weird, ultra specific HCs please! Any FR headcanon you've got. I want out of the box, unconventional, the kind of stuff you're 95% sure no one gives a shit about but you, headcanons that could only ever apply in one dumb situation in your story and nowhere else gimme the goods.
In traditional Ridgeback cultures, it's considered rude to invite guests into an excessively tidy space. Since borrowing is how they deepen relationships, hiding all your stuff before someone visits is basically equivalent to "I don't care about you, do your business and get out". Most maintain collections of knickknacks in the entryway to their lairs specifically for this purpose.
The continent Sornieth is mostly on the Southern Hemisphere of the planet. The Pillar of the World was built on the Equator, and Second-Age societies used it as the point of origin on their world maps
The elemental holiday currencies were all based on/inspired by a cycle of fairy tales. The reason why ‘Gladekeeper’ is an option when answering Tomo’s question about ‘the comfort food of heartbroken dragons’ is because the origin story of the Bladed Flatleaf actually does involve the Gladekeeper giving leaves from her own body
Investiture in Ice
On the final day of the sixth Starfall Celebration, the day determined in advance by the Priests of the Eleven together with the Wardens of the Fortress of Ends, Dame Talvi Winterdance undertook the rites through which she would become a Gaoler and, the transformation being completed, she would be initiated into the Order of Seekers and be given a new name. Normally it would be considered sacrilege to invoke the holy magics of one deity during the festival of another; but Sister Shmi assures us that the unusually cold yet cloudless autumn we’ve had so far can be considered a sign of the Arcanist’s permission to move forward with the ritual.
First Dame Talvi was stripped of her armor and other garments, and then with an incantation her glittering tattoos were made to vanish; the transformation, it seems, requires that the subject be rebuilt from the ground up. Then she proceeded into a deeper chamber of the temple, accompanied by Sister Chione, Master Healer Hortense, Wizard Majus, and a delegate from the Fortress. The Cragward Custodian who usually accompanies Talvi stood guard at the entrance, letting no one through.
((OOC: gah, i would write more to this, but i can already feel my attention span waning e_e))
Headcanon time!
Exalted dragons and the souls of the dead exist together on the ethereal plane with the gods. The difference between Exaltation and death is that the physical bodies of the Exalted continue to exist so that they can manifest themselves on the material plane while on assignment for the gods.
Remember the Naomi legend? She is one of Sornieth’s demigods, serving as a psychopomp or guide of souls between the planes. Other demigods include Marva the trickster and Philippides the herald (colloquially called the Live Update Skydancer). It is common for clans to have smaller shrines to these alongside their shrines to the Eleven, and to include celebrations for them during the festivals of the gods with whom they (the demigods) are most closely associated.
So we have...
Naomi
Marva
Philippides
Boston and Hope
Now wondering whether to add Jake the Social Medium to this list...

to make everyone a little less sad: the arcanist venturing out to explore the cosmos and finding a little metal creature alone on a barren planet. the little creature is rather broken and quite cold, but the arcanist decides to take them back to sornieth.
he goes to visit stormcatcher, noting that the design is similar to his works and creations. stormcatcher is a bit annoyed at first, he’s busy you know, but the little creature is very intriguing and oh alright give it here-
when the little creature is back and breathing again, the arcanist finds that there’s a whole collection of images from outer space, stars and galaxies and things the arcanist had only dreamed of.
the arcanist thanks stormcatcher before returning to the observatory, cradling the little metal creature with such love and protection it rivals a mother’s love. once he’s arrived he quickly summons all the scholars and teachers and students, so that they may ponder this wonderful little creature.
‘what will you call it, sir?’ one asks, a young fae with a gleam of starlight in her eyes.
the arcanist is quiet for a moment, before speaking. ‘she shall be called opportunity.’
Oppy as the Arcanist’s adopted daughter 😭🙌🏻
Lore clans out there?
Hey, getting set up around here and looking to follow FR blogs, particularly those focusing on lore! If you know any / are one yourself, please signal boost :> !! (and even if you aren’t, please say hello! would love to meet more of you :D)
As for us, our lore will focus on:
Fancy Light-region city w/ nerds and snooty nobles (likely lots of gays)
Dark catacombs with maaaybe an eldritch abomination? possibly
An isolationist religious cult of assassins and artisans
On the side we also do:
Skins/accents
Writing & poetry
art once every almost never
No idea if this is going to show up in the tag yet but here we go!!!
Swap ‘light’ with ‘nature’ and 'an eldritch abomination’ with 'several eldritch abominations’ and you’ve got my lore, so hello!
We have plenty of nerds, a tree-dragon clique, and a squad of assassin-spies!
Another weirdly amazing piece of nature: the llareta shrubs in the Atacama Desert / Source
Nursery Rhyme for Flight Rising
(Based on the Monday’s Child Poem, free for lore use!)
Earth’s Child always close to home
Wind’s Child has far to roam
Fire’s Child burns bright
Shadow’s Child sticks to the night
Light’s Child ever mourns
Plague’s Child has many battles bourn
Nature’s Child grows high
Arcane’s child always watches the sky
Water’s Child called to the tide
Ice’s Child has sins to hide
Storm’s Child works unrestrained
and The Shade’s Child is never claimed
the flight rising deities and their tolerance of hatchlings
Arcanist: loves the imagination and eagerness to learn of most hatchlings, dislikes when they color in his books. it’s not uncommon to see a dozen tiny fae hatchlings perched on his shoulders
Earthshaker: will let hatchlings play on him all day long, but most of them scatter when he starts on one of his long-winded stories
Flamecaller: enjoys them, but she can be a little brusque sometimes, so most hatchlings find her scary
Gladekeeper: loves hatchlings from her own flight fiercely, but will spare the lives of hatchlings from other flights if they wander into her forest (adult dragons are not so lucky)
Icewarden: are you kidding? (he secretly thinks they’re adorable, but he’s just TERRIBLE around them)
Lightweaver: loves WELL-BEHAVED AND POLITE hatchlings, will let them dress up in her fine jewelry and silks if they win her over. can be very cold to hatchlings she finds rude
Plaguebringer: will play with hatchlings a little too roughly sometimes. the most tough-skinned hatchlings will often take to playing games of chicken and seeing who’s brave enough to sneak up on her while she’s working
Shadowbinder: loves hatchlings and loves playing with them but will never let them win at games on purpose to be nice. if they win it has to be on their own merit
Stormcatcher: ‘Bring Your Hatchling To Work’ Day! (Productivity reduction of more than 5% will be punished severely)
Tidelord: hatchlings are put off by his doomsday prophecies but he doesn’t dislike them. serious-minded hatchlings often begin training in divination in the Spiral Keep at a young age
Windsinger: loves the fun, free spirits of hatchlings, will often leave gifts of feathers if he spots them playing, and delights in singing catchy tunes on the breeze that hatchlings will pick up on and irritate their parents with
and on a whole different note, since i had to unfollow 15+ inactive blogs, if any active fr-only blogs could rb this so i could check them out that’d be neat! bonus points for plague and/or lore clans 👀
heyooooo
More Dragon Idioms
“summer at the Wyrmwound” - a really, really bad smell. Used mostly outside Plague territory.
“swap wind” - literally, the practice of alternating position when flying in formation, as the dragon taking rear expends less energy. Figuratively, any situation in which favors are exchanged, similar to the expression “you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours”.
“Viridian mile” (or appropriate unit of distance measure) - a task that is far more difficult than it appears to be from the outside, or appeared to be before it was undertaken. Refers to the thickly-grown terrain of the Viridian Labyrinth, which can turn a normally unimpressive unit of ground travel into a demanding and dangerous distance.
“I’m your charge” - equivalent to “I’m in your hands”. The dynamic between guardians and their charges is so embedded in dragon society that it’s often referred to to lend context to similar (but less crucial) interactions.
“choke down the haunch” - to do something unpleasant to achieve a desired end. Refers to a folk tale in which a tundra dragon must hunt and eat with a mirror pack in order to win their respect and help with a greater task, despite not being a carnivore.
“making rocs out of sparrows” - making mountains out of molehills, exaggerating a problem to oneself or others.
“Arcane hello” - meeting by accident through shared participation in an unpleasant event (like being attacked by harpies and forced to shelter together). A small family of idioms appends “Arcane” to nouns to imply versions of those things “gone wrong”. They’re not very appreciated by Arcane dragons.
“wintercoated” - metaphorically, having thick skin, being able to shrug off criticism unpleasant experiences. Originates with tundras’ thick winter coats.
“catching storms” - an allusion to the Lightning god, Stormcatcher; similar to ‘now you’re thinking with portals’, can describe a particularly ambitious and ingenious project, however it can also be used negatively to imply hubris.
“Warden’s Humor/Laughing at the warden” - Having a particularly dark sense of humor, or laughing in the face of a gruesome situation/death. Refers to the Icewarden and his ways of dealing with enemies.
“On the east side of things” - Being hopelessly lost, a reference to the dense jungles of the viridian labyrinth and how many dragon’s die trying to get out.
“Shade’s teeth” - Something particularly dirty or disgusting.
“Eleven’s heads” Essentially taking the deity’s name in vain, also can have a darker meaning in relation to emperors.
“A singing entrance” A loud, clumsy, or unexpected introduction. Refers to the old tales of wind lairs unexpectedly being visited by their deity and having to make accommodations. Not as hated by the wind flight as one might think.
