So much translation discourse just boils down to monolinguals not understanding that "coolness" doesn't translate across languages, and you need to re-add it manually on the other end.
Spanish and French understand the anglicism so just say "eso es muy cool" or "c'est très cool" if the context is not particularly formal
No no, not literally the word "cool" I mean the [concept of coolness]. Things that sound cool, poetic, funny, dramatic, etc in one language will completely fail to land if you simply go 1-to-1 word equivalents.
In the Japanese version of Fullmetal Alchemist, the antagonists are named after the seven deadly sins, in English. As in, rather than the Japanese word, "Greed" is still Greed in the original.
Because loan words from English are often pretty "cool", as with your Spanish and French example.
But this presents a problem, because, to give them a bit of flair, the antagonists are sometimes given a proper Japanese adjective along with their name, to make a sort of title of sorts.
"Greedy Greed"
The italicized part would be a Japanese adjective, and the bolded part is an English loanword. This is fine in Japanese, but would be totally nonsense in an English translation.
After all, it's common sense to keep the names the same, duh, and obviously the whole point of what you're doing is to translate the Japanese.
Greedy Greed. You cannot call him that.
You can't go 1-to-1. To keep the [concept of coolness], you have to identify what made the original cool, and then recreate it in the new language.
And here, we have a foreign word, and a native word, both meaning the same thing, paired together to give an antagonist a cool sounding title. So how do we do that in English.
Well, the seven deadly sins, being Christian and Catholic and all, have fancy names in Latin. Or well, they just sound fancy in English, because Latin was the language of intellectuals for a long long time.
And in fact, while we also have the word "greed", English has a fancier sounding word that means the same thing, but whose etymology comes from the fancy Latin. That might give a similar cool-loanword feeling, right?
Let's try it.
"Greed the Avaricious"
Oh yeah. That's definitely, undeniably, "cool".
Ye knowe eek, that in forme of speche is chaunge With-inne a thousand yeer, and wordes tho That hadden prys, now wonder nyce and straunge Us thinketh hem; and yet they spake hem so, And spedde as wel in love as men now do.
chaucer, Troilus and Criseyde c. 1380
glossary: eek also and even tho at the time prys great value wonder a cause for astonishment nyce stupid spedde succeeded
You know the form of language, too, can change. Within a thousand years, even the words that were most precious then, seem strange and foolish to us; yet they spoke them so and did no worse in love than we now do.

Learning this was an intentional genocide changed me.
I know most of those following me know this, but just to make it super clear. An Gorta Mór (The Great Hunger/the Great Famine) was a deliberate genocide of the Irish people. There was enough food grown in Ireland to make sure everyone was alive and healthy and survived. Instead it was exported, sent to England and elsewhere for profit while men, women, and children starved in the streets. While the English landlords fucked off and evicted starving families who couldn’t afford rent. While babies were too weak to cry and died at the side of the road.
They tried to kill us, but they did not succeed. And we owe so much thanks to the other oppressed peoples, in particular the Choctaw Nation and the Masai, who sent money and grain to us.
Let me repeat that. The Choctaw Nation who had just gone through the Trail of Tears sent us money to try save Irish lives. It’s led to an understanding between Irish people and Native American tribes, most recently when we donated to the Navajo and Hopi fundraisers for COVID-19 relief, because while it may be a different tribe, Irish people will never forget those who helped us and we’ll help back.
The entire population of the island is less than seven million people. We’re still a million less on this island than pre famine. And it’s not that long ago. My grandmother’s grandparents lived through it. We’ve told the stories, it literally changed the DNA of the country. We have a national fear of renting, because so many people were evicted. People joke about Irish people always offering loads of food, but it’s because there’s that cultural memory of not being able to.
They tried to kill us, but they did not succeed. We will not let them take our lives, we will not let them take our language. We lost so much, but we will not lose it all.
This is why I get so angry when people say “it was the potato famine, it was because of monoculture/microbes.”
Nope. The potatoes were the only thing Irish people were allowed to fucking eat, because as pointed out, the rest of the crops they were growing were for their landlords to ship to England. So when the one “worthless” crop they were allowed to eat rotted in the field, the English crown, empire, landlords, all shrugged and carried on. People starved to death lying next to productive fields.
Video games kinda suck at designing female heroes
In 2002, the photographer Howard Schatz published a photo collection called "Athlete" featuring pictures of, well, various top athletes from every sport and genre. These are some of the women he photographed, and the thing I want you to do in your head is compare the variety of humans that you're seeing here to the variety of humans you see in the cast list of your favourite video games.
These women are all in peak human condition for their fields - if you wanted to design a character who is tough and strong, these are the kinds of bodies you should look to for reference on what that looks like. You tell me how many video games or comics or movies or anime create their characters with even this limited variety in shape and size.
Of course, realism is not the end-all and be-all, fantasy characters don't need to be realistic, but if you are given the chance to make a character look like literally anything and justify it by "magic," and the only thing you do is reproduce the same 3 or 4 generically hot women over and over again, you are doing character design very poorly, in my opinion.

they literally deleted all existing reblogs of that post from existence btw<3
and theyre tryin to delete it all again
[Image description: the three images in the original post are marked as deleted for violating Tumblr's User guidelines. The image in the reblog is a screenshot of what the images in the post originally read, and are as follows:
First is a screenshot of a different tumblr post and a reblog of it. This transcript is minorly adapted for screenreaders. The original post reads: "being on this site is fucking crazy because u will see a post go around that's a little "too loud" about transfeminism for tumblrs insanely bigoted ass moderation team, and then by the evening u can go look at the same post and everyone on it will have been banned, and the next day a second post will go around pointing out the malicious and completely unreasonable bans that were executed by staff on the previous post and then by THAT evening those users will also have been banned and we're all expected to just sit there and pretend it isnt happening". The reblog reads: "i SERIOUSLY feel like tumblrs built in transfem eating machine has been getting way hungrier recently... like ive literally been on this account for a week and had at least 15 different mutuals get termed in that time. i refresh my dash and see peoples accounts go down in front of my eyes. i keep being like oh jeez i forgot to follow [mutual] on this blog? and it turns out that, no, she just got banned the second i turned my back. im literally seeing blogs get taken down that havent physically been up long enough to have possibly posted anything objectionable. im seeing "reblog to help me find my mutuals" posts going around where the op has already been nuked again. like come on".
Second is a screenshot of an email header. The subject line reads: "Tumblr Account Terminated".
Third is a screenshot of the beginning of a Wikipedia article. It reads: "The Streisand effect describes a situation where an attempt to hide, remove, or censor information results in the unintended consequence of the effort instead increasing public awareness of the information".

alright I've got to do some quick math to explain attitudes towards AI to my boss.
we're looking to create an AI policy, and when we were talking about this, my boss (older millennial) was genuinely shocked to hear that younger people do not (seem) to view AI positively (a la the recent commencement speakers being booed)
please rb for larger sample size!
Question 1/3
What is your age, and do you feel AI is a net positive or net negative in our lives today?
under 18, AI is a net positive
under 18, AI is a net negative
18-29, AI is a net positive
18-29, AI is a net negative
30-45, AI is a net positive
30-45, AI is a net negative
46-60, AI is a net positive
46-60, AI is a net negative
over 60, AI is a net postive
over 60, AI is a net negative
Question 2/3
How often do you visit or interact with museums/archives (whether in person or online)?
Frequently (multiple times per month)
Often (multiple times per year)
Occasionally (a couple times per year)
Rarely (once every couple of years)
Never :(
Question 3/3
If you saw a museum was using AI in exhibits, marketing, research, etc., would you be more or less inclined to visit that museum?
under 18, more inclined
under 18, less inclined
18-29, more inclined
18-29, less inclined
30-45, more inclined
30-45, less inclined
46-60, more inclined
46-60, less inclined
over 60, more inclined
over 60, less inclined
Thank you for helping with this data collection. Please rb for as big a sample as possible!

One Piece has always linked piracy, freedom, and the sea, but this speech by Sabo is one of the clearest examples that really lays out the philosophy of the manga. I think it's really important that after this all three boys say their dreams aloud to one another (perhaps for the first time) which then leads to them becoming brothers. Oda goes from general ideas of freedom, to each character's specific example, and it's only after showing that they're united in these ideas do they forge that ultimate bond.
It's kind of how Luffy ends out picking his crew. Each Straw Hat already had a dream and freedom they're chasing after, them coming together as pirates almost feels inevitable
I didn't think that it could get any worse after google decided to show jermasus as the main image result for searching "jerma" but clearly I've been proven wrong because the new image is truly much much worse
i was looking everywhere in the car for my vape because i lost it and I found these instead
I’m astounded at the level of personality that can be predicted from the word vape and these glasses.
this is the meanest thing anyone’s ever said to me in my entire life but I can’t even argue with this. what could I possibly say to defend myself in this instance. this was a one hit KO. this was a murder. this was a fucking slaughter and I have only myself to blame
You act like people knowing you’re in the Squirtle Squad is a bad thing?
yes that is exactly where these glasses are from. a perfectly respectable long standing anime and nothing more
female-presenting vitruvian
i appreciate the amount of people reblogging this despite me not really tagging this at all. im glad many of people feel the same anger i do.
