Gathering FiKi
@gatheringfiki
This Tumbr aims to provide a platform for the Fili/Kili fandom and community, primarily through running a variety of events throughout the year, encouraging new FiKi content. Due to frequent overlap of interests, we also tend to include in our events other fictional crossover pairings, such as Britchell or DarkHawk.
07/22: After Carrock. Only slightly late this time! I tried writing this one in second POV, something I've never done before. I'm not a fan of it, and I've only read one story that was absolutely mesmerizing in this style (a Hannigram fic if anyone is curious), but I hope it shows my love for these boys, and the special part they hold in my heart :) @gatheringfiki
FiKi Week, Day 4- After the Carrock
The shriek of the eagles fades away, the powerful beating of their wings ruffling your hair. Our saviors, in a sense.
You don't look away from the mountain. I can tell you're entranced, mind already running wild with all of the things you've always wanted to do in our ancestral home. Things I promised I'd do with youâ when we huddled under the blanket as little dwarf-lings and you made me swear to discover all of the hidden passages within the Lonely Mountain.
You turn to me, smile wide, dimpled and handsome. Your brown hair looks wilder than usual, all the braids undone.
I chuckle, reaching outâ I want to tuck your hair, be gentle. But there's too many eyes, so I hold back and roughly ruffle your hair instead, making it worse. Your shout of outrage is not even half of what it could be. The giddy laugh that follows betrays you.
A moment passes where you are taking the view in silence, but soon the company starts moving, beginning to climb down. You stray towards the back. I follow.
You look at me with your eyebrows up, 'Kind of dramatic for the eagles to leave us here,' you say, lips quirked.
I smirk back, slinging one arm over your shouldersâ strong and broad, perfect to lean on. 'How else would we get the dramatic view of Erebor?' I wonder aloud.
You snicker, eyes crinkling shut. Your arm comes around my waist, pulling me closer.
You've been keeping me closer since the giants. I don't question it.
You pull me, and we follow everyone else down the steep cliff. Your arm never moves, not even when Thorin notices.
You crave his approval, I know. Want our uncle to notice you beyond your recklessness. Yet, you meet his eyes head on, tightening your hold on me. The stare doesn't last, your defiance winning.
Your hair flutters, closer to me nowâ the smell of smoke still lingers heavily. 'You're lucky that stubble you call a beard didn't burn up,' I joke.
You stick your tongue out at me; childish after all. 'Proving my point, brother.'
You smile then, burying your face against mine. I know I don't smell any better, but you don't comment on it. You don't pull away.
It was the fumes. That was Filiâs official excuse and he was going to die sticking to it.
Fumes were the reason why for the last three days heâd been holding hands with Kili, as they stumbled through this godforsaken stretch of the forest with no roads, no paths, no end in sight, and no signal. Because uncle Thorin decided that they should go back to hiking, clearly failing to draw any meaningful conclusions from the last time they had tried that. And because his famous sense of direction was now in charge, ever since Google Maps stopped working.
Fili had had some pointed questions to ask about this on the very first day, when they passed through an area positively dotted with warning signs, quite a few of them sporting a skull. But Thorin knew better: this was a shortcut, that would get them to the Lonely Mountain in no time, making up the time they had lost last time they had gotten lost.
Then the fumes started and Filiâs hands started wandering.
Late, like always uv u - for day 3, I chose "After stone giants", but took some liberties with how "after" it is lol I attempted some stream of consciousness from Kili's POV (which I don't usually write). Hopefully it is enjoyable, even if it not completely believable hehe @gatheringfiki
07/20
Fili was alive- hale and whole and uninjured; Kili made sure.
Running hands over his brotherâs body.
Comforting noises came from Fili, as if far away. As if it has been Kili to almost die- and not Fili.
Yelling coming from somewhere- Bilbo something or the other.
But Kili couldnât concentrate on that.
Only Filiâ Fili.
The image of his brother getting further away from him, of the chasm separating them growing wider- in seconds.
Only took seconds.
The stupid stone giants, stealing Kiliâs breath as he tried reaching and couldnât- didnât. Why had he stepped away? He shouldâve stepped closer.
Clung to Fili, died with him.
But Fili hadnât died- the stone giant crashed but Fili didnât die. Came back to him.
Yet- thereâs a simmering, barely there rage- uncle calling for Kili when Fili...Fili had been the one to die- but not, he didnât die.
He shouldâŚprobably have a conversation with Thorin about that, maybe.
But now.
Now though, his focus was only Fili; Fili who was hugging him just as tight. Fili who couldâve died, but didnât.
Alive.
Fili was alive, and pressed against him as close as two beings could get. Kili wanted closer, but how to get closer? Another thought for another time, maybe.
Important now was Fili breathing, air hitting Kiliâs neck where his brother pressed in close. A heartbeat thumping, could be Kiliâs, or maybe Filiâs, maybe beating in tandem. Or maybe Kili had really lost it, euphoric. Because Fili was back in his arms.
âKili, Iâm okay.â
With those words spoken against his ear, the silence around him crumbledâ the cacophony of the thunderstorm, the dwarves all talking around them. Kili drew a breath in, his lungs rioting against him because he hadnât been breathing at all.Â
Kili looked up into his brotherâs eyes, blue and calm; clear like the skies back in Rivendell. And something splintered in Kiliâs mindâ broke and came back together in a different shape.Â
Truthfully, there was more than a dozen jars in the pantry that Fili was discreetly ransacking, so surely, nobody was going to miss one.
He peered around at the neatly arranged rows of various other preserves, jams and pickles and felt a little stab of uncertainty, as his ânobodyâs counting once you get to that manyâ theory wobbled slightly in the face of the perfect organisation.
He spared a quick glance back towards the main, well, hall, of the house, where the rest of their party were just making themselves at home, and grabbed his loot. Swiping a spoon off the cluttered table he passed on his way to find less crowded premises was a doodle.
Fili would die before he admitted it, but he had a terrible sweet tooth.
Besides, he figured he deserved his honey: over the course of the last few days heâd been kidnapped, stripped of his weapons, shot at, threatened to be eaten, subjected to some truly horrendous amateur rap music, shot at, forced to parachute out of a light aircraft, shot at, and parted from most of the new weapons heâd acquired, as he ran for his life, in yet another course of being shot at.
Any other sensible party would have just caught a flight. A smarter group might have simply driven across.
But no. âDo you want them to know weâre coming?!â asked Thorin, and the mad glint in his eyes stopped anyone arguing.
So instead, they were hiking. Having left the last homely home, (the Rivendell hostel â aged buildings, new-fangled vegan food and a truly bizarre love of its owners for everything Art Noveau), they basically bought up the entire contents of a tiny mountaineering shop next door, and up the trail they went.
âIt will be a shortcut,â Thorin said. âThree days tops,â he insisted.
Truthfully, Fili didnât mind nearly as much as he made it appear. Kili and him grew up in the Blue Mountains, raised traversing their ridges and peaks with their mother, who was keen on an outdoors-y type of upbringing, instead of the reliable-wifi-and-constantly-getting-into-trouble kind that the boys would have preferred. It was kind of nice to have Kili at his side again, expertly tying off ropes, wordlessly getting the fire started and instinctively picking out exactly the same paths that Filiâs own feet would have picked out.
The same could not be said for the rest of their party: lawyers, accountants, doctors, chefs, house decorators and bare-knuckle-fighters among them were getting much more adventure than they signed up for.
And that was before the weather broke down all around them, on day five.
The guy was an accountant. Fili assumed that there were Reasons why Thorin thought they needed an accountant on this whole hare-brained venture and that those reasons were highly illegal.
The problem was that the guy was probably unaware that the Reasons for his involvement were highly illegal, and he certainly didnât belong in a paramilitary organisation. Which, of course, meant that Kili would be looking out for him. He was soft-hearted like that. Which, of course, meant that Fili would have to look out for both of them in turn. This was going to be a busy couple of weeks.
Then again, there was still a decent chance that they might have scared the guy off: they have pretty much destroyed his plumbing and there wasnât much you could make a meal out of left in his fancy walk-in pantry. For someone who came across as a homebody and a foodie, that might have been a step too far.
Fili hoped that it was: minding his brat of a brother was already taking up all of his waking hours and quite a few he should have been spending sleeping.
07/19- Watching the ponies. It's a teeny scene between just the boys that is not shown before Bilbo does his main character thing and gets bullied into almost getting killed. For this one, a short dialogue only snippet! @gatheringfiki
âHow come we have to watch the ponies? Itâs so boring!â
âBecause we are the youngest and it would be rude to expect them to watch ponies.â
âUhhh we are not the youngest. Weâre both olderââ
âOri does not count.â
âWha-! He too does count!â
âOkay, how is he supposed to defend the ponies?â
â...â
âExactly-! Oof- youâre heavy, Kili!â
âDeal with it. Where am I supposed to lie down? Iâm not putting my head on this filthy floor.â
âYou spoiled, little-! How is my lap more comfortable? How is this watching ponies?â
âYouâre the one that sat down Fili, and youâre softer than the ground too.â
âMissing the comforts of home already, huh?â
âHow dare you- your lap doesnât come close to it, thereâs something poking me even.â
âOh Mahal, what are you doing?! Donât just turn around and rummage through my belt- itâs a dagger, Kili, please. In a sheath, it canât stab you.â
â...oh. I thought it was something else.â
â...â
â...â
â...Kili, please. You will drive me to an early grave. Go count the ponies again, we canât even see them from down here.â
âFili, youâre so dramatic, youâre the one thatâŚ.twelve, thirteen, fourteenâŚâ
âKili?â
âWe had how many ponies again?â
â...sixteen.â
This year I'm cheating, folks! Back in 2021 for the FiKi Week we already had a theme of 'missing scenes' and I did start a light-hearted little story about the boys, set in a modern setting.
For whatever reason, at the time, I wasn't able to do all the full week, and the story remained unfinished. This year I'm returning to it, and I have written some of my missing entries, but I will also be borrowing the parts from 2021 for some of the days. It will be a mix of old and new. I hope we have enough new faces in the fandom that at least for some of you this will be new and exciting either way.
I leave you to imagine your own version of the main plot points that we all know from the films, but set in this universe.
---
Fili was on the road. Â
This in itself wasnât an issue â Fili loved road trips: the open spaces, the feeling of freedom as the world whizzed past him, the sensually purring machine between his thighsâŚÂ
He even knew where he was going, which was more than he could say for any number of his previous excursions â heâd been sent a very specific address (half way across the country). But he had no idea why he was going there; in a typical âUncle Thorinâ fashion, the text provided the minimum possible amount of detail: just the location, time and date. Â
I chose "Before the Quest" for 07/18 (I am a few hours late in eastern time zone in the US oop) @gatheringfiki :)
I am trying a few different styles of prose for these prompts, so although they won't be very long, they will give me some more time dipping into canon and spending time with the boys voices!
Day 1- Epistolary
Mother,Â
As I write this down, we are almost completely packed to head out. I can tell uncle is worried, and has been tenser than usual. Kili wants me to write that heâs been overall snappier as well. Not in those exact words, but Iâd rather not write anything untowards our great uncle, especially if he could find it. I say uncle is worried, but I must confess that I am feeling some worry myself. Not for my own sake, and not for our company either. KiliâŚas the youngest fighter in the company, he will be the one with the most to prove. Mother, that scares me. I write this with caution, making sure Kili does not look over my shoulder and take it as a challenge. You know, perhaps even better than I, how impulsive and stubborn your son can be. My greatest fear is him not making it back to you. I can only promise I will try my best to reign him in and if not that, then to protect him. I can hear him outside now, whistling to himself as he sorts through our packs. Without a care in the world. Mother, I cannot provide you with any assurances about my safety, but I swear, I would give my life to protect Kili. Please do not be sad. We will see you again when we reclaim the mountain and welcome you home. Until then, know I leave you my love in this letter.Â
Fili
-------------
Hi my wonderful birth giver,
I know Fili already wrote you, boringly detailing everything, I am sure. He shooed me away when I tried contributing to it you should reprimand him! But donât worry, I will keep your eldest safe! Fili thinks he has all the responsibility just because heâs the heir, but I am not the spare for nothing! I cannot wait to go meet our famous burglar, the one Gandalf talked about- oh, Fili just said that you did not know about that, nevermind! Cannot wait to see you at the mountain, to see you back home. I promise I will behave well, like I always do. HAHA- Fili is making that face at me- you know the one he makes, when he looks particularly constipated! Mother, do not worry about us, please. We will be okay, we are mighty Durin warriors and we will not fail this quest. AnywaysâŚthis is it for now, we will try to write more on the way to the ShâŚthe uh place! Where Gandalf is!

FĂli hovered uncertainly in the doorway, swathed in a faded blue cotton yukata KĂli had tossed his way. Heâd left his own clothes draped neatly over end of KĂliâs plain iron bedframe and his work boots standing guard nearby, completely unaware that they would find a permanent home there.
KĂli glanced up from sharpening his pencils with a small whittlerâs knife. His eyes glittered with mischief. Only if theyâre looking. Anyway, I need the light.
--- Revelations by @flow-it-show-it
Another drawing intended for the sequel. Maybe one day ;)
This drawing is from this year and was the last one I needed to complete the set.
This poor chap has been patiently waiting his turn since early 2022.
Originally, he was meant for a sequel to Revelations, my collab with the super-talented @flow-it-show-it. But then although a lot of the sequel got written, the story took a completely different turn, and the artwork didn't quite fit any more.
Still, me being me, I wanted to draw everything I set out to draw for this verse, so I held back posting anything. I only recently finished the last drawing I wanted for it, thanks to those folks on Discord who regularly talk to me and support me (<3).
I spoke with @flow-it-show-it and we decided to go ahead with posting my secret stash of art for now, so there will be 2 more artworks over the next two weekends. Meanwhile, if you liked Revelations, perhaps you could leave a comment, or show your love and support for the writer, so that the sequel (which I know for a fact is gonna be awesome) also gets the chance to see the light of the day.
And then one day there may or may not be a separate story in the same verse for those 3 artworks that I'm posting now ;)
KĂliâs wearing his daisy hair clips, a tribute of sorts to that night two years ago, when it seemed that some benevolent force had parted the entire city like an ocean so that they could walk directly into each otherâs arms. He sticks a sprig of cilantro in the gap between his front teeth and twirls it. FĂli cracks up just looking at him.  Thereâs no need to speak, but much laughter to share.
Far out ahead in front of them, opportunity stretches like a freeway. Beyond the studio, the class room, maybe even the city itself, life and love and success lie in wait. But tonight, the world feels perfect just as it is, everything meshing like the gears and screws of FĂliâs beloved typewriter, no longer mute but capable of writing a future.
