Crown of Recceswinth
Location: Museo Arqueológico Nacional Madrid, Spain
c. second half of 7th century
Gold, garnets, pearls, sapphires and colored glass
This votive crown was found in the Treasure of Guarrazar in Toledo, Spain. The crown displays the name of the Visigothic king Recceswinth. All letters are intact however an R is still located in the Musée National du Moyen Age, Themes de Cluny, Paris. Apart from the missing in action R, this crown is amazing. And keep in mind that each empty space was containing a piece of colored class at one time, in other words… intense.
Now the crown was never worn nor was it intended to be worn. This crown was placed hanging over the altar in the church as a demonstration of piety on the part of Recceswinth. He also wanted to sneak in there that he is above God, so watch out.
The letters spell out RECCESWINTH REX OFFERET or in other words King Recceswinth offered this. Yes, it is a bit simple and direct but who wants to waste time when you are writing in pure gold.

she still makes these and they’ve only grown more wonderful over the years. The wood-fired surfaces really give them life.
