Here’s another fun tidbit about life as an expat… American driver’s licenses don’t transfer in the Netherlands. You can’t just take a test, either. You have to pay for driving instruction. So, today, I did something I never thought I would do again: I took a driving lesson. After hundreds of thousands of miles driven across the States, I’m unlearning many habits and rules. Currently I’m being driven home by the next student driver (who is a bit wibbly behind the wheel, bless her). This was my third visit to the Anne Frank House. I never get over how striking it is that this house is right in the center of Amsterdam, even though I walk daily past the stumbling stones in town (brass remembrance plaques for Holocaust victims). It seems more important than ever to remember what can happen when we tolerate the marginalisation of others. This is the outside of the house, the view across the street, the view of the Westerkerk from the museum next to the Achterhuis, and the (original) Dutch version of Anne’s diary, which I am attempting to read. It was special to visit with friends who were interested in the history, and who sat in reflection after the visit. When I played in Seattle in September, I got to meet a friend I’d known over ten years online. We initially met on Sellaband, the precursor to Kickstarter. I believe she was living in New Zealand at the time. Fleur and her husband Wesley played a flawless set and had such great energy on stage!
