My exact behaviour the moment Angel appears in season 7 killing the whole vibe immediately
insane production design choice to put a 1984 poster on niall’s bedroom door, because the immediate shorthand of the novel is obviously ‘big brother is always watching’—this idea of an omnipresent authority that continues governing your behavior even in moments of physical absence—which feels inextricable from the way ruben operates within the show. but what makes 1984 so genuinely horrifying is the psychological consequence of prolonged domination: the erosion of a private self, the way fear and control become so thoroughly internalized that the watcher no longer needs to stand in the room because he has already taken up residence inside you, rewriting how you understand love, loyalty, safety—and what you believe you deserve from all three.
that is exactly what ruben’s violence has done. even in his absence, everyone continues organizing themselves around him—anticipating him, contracting around wounds he opened years earlier, the past remaining not behind them but invasively, insistently present. he’s a specter lingering over everything.
which makes the placement on niall’s door so devastating, because this episode is about niall reaching—toward autonomy, toward a life expansive enough to finally contain honesty and desire. just away—far enough to exhale, far enough to start anew. and yet gadd frames his most private space with a novel about what total surveillance does to a person’s interiority and selfhood.
niall is trying to become someone. the poster is gadd telling you, in the most precise way possible, that big brother already got there first.
because in the end, winston smith—the protagonist of 1984—doesn’t just submit to big brother. he loves him.
#ur brain is so beautiful
i forget that fight club isnt a niche underground 90s movie with a small gay fandom (the only part of the fandom i interact with) and is actually one of the most popular movies ever made with an evil sigma male fandom
this is, in my opinion, the best panel from absolute martian manhunter since issue #4. incredible work on so many levels. the novelty of being encouraged to draw in a comic book is heightened by the context of the situation. “hey there, reader! want to participate in american imperialism? it’s fun and interactive!” asks a faceless and identityless uncle sam, whose blank face shows how hollow america is and always has been. the country has given up even pretending to be just or kind or relatable, and is encouraging its citizens to aid them in capturing and subduing empathy. this issue could not have been timed more perfectly.
congratulations to yoshiki and hikaru for winning best couple of the year ❤️🩹
#omg u finally watched it! #I knew they would look nice in ur style
On a random day during Ilya's first stay at the cottage, he and Shane are wrestling on the couch, fighting each other for the remote because Shane wants to watch a boring hockey documentary while Ilya wants to see Legally Blonde for the billionth time. They're chirping each other, elbows jabbing into ribs, hands pushing at faces, curses flying, and their laughter echoes off the walls of the cottage. If Ilya could bottle the sound and carry it with him forever, he would. And then, mid laughter, he stops. His breath hitches. And he starts crying.
Big, ugly sobs tear out of him and Shane pulls away immediately, his face a picture of concern, hands fluttering uselessly because he doesn't know what's happening, what triggered this, but he wants to fix it because Ilya is crying and that's unacceptable.
Ilya sees it through blurry eyes and curls into himself, hiding his face away from Shane in his hands instead. How can he explain the way his happiness threatened to explode out of him so badly that it ended up imploding instead? That he's so happy he doesn't know what to do with himself, how to act, how to contain it, how to let himself feel it?
"What's wrong, Ilya?" Shane eventually asks when it becomes clear Ilya isn't calming down and he doesn't know what to do.
And the concern in his voice is too much to bear. Ilya is ruining the moment. They were having fun just a minute ago, he can't have his boyfriend think anything is wrong. Because nothing is. That's the issue. So he lifts his head up, sniffling, wiping his eyes so he can see Shane better. His voice shakes and he knows it. Can't be bothered to try to play it cool anymore.
"I've never been this happy before. It's... too much."
The confession sits between them in the silence that follows. Shane gathers Ilya up in his arms and holds him tightly, Ilya curled up on his lap and looking so small, so fragile, so young, nothing like the 6 foot Russian Terror that chirps everyone and taunts them into starting fights as a strategy.
Shane is a fixer. He's the guy with a plan. And when he doesn't have one ready, he makes one. But there is no fixing this. No plan on how to tackle the issue. All he can do is hold Ilya and pet through his curls with a gentleness that brings even more tears to the blonde's eyes as he quietly puts Legally Blonde on, and hope that, in time, happiness - real happiness - will become so normal for Ilya that it won't break his heart in two and bring him to tears every time he feels it anymore.
People don’t mention this enough but it’s obvious that many people who are adamant that byler won’t happen don’t take Will as a seriously as a love rival for Mike because he’s gay.
Quite literally they devalue the relationship and potential for romance because so often gay relationships are treated as lesser than in comparison to straight ones.
Will is just as viable as an option as any other love interests we have seen in the show - treating him differently literally because he’s gay is tremendously gross.
The Brazillian Quartet repping looks
byler aside, will and robin’s friendship and solidarity was so beautiful and so important and to see queer characters bond over their queerness and to have that queerness save the day in a major franchise is already so huge
I would like for James Gunn to explain what happened between seasons 1 & 2 that made him start to write Adrian like that. He's not just some one note crazy man comic relief? We are presented with a far more layered and complicated character in season 1 and I think it sucks ass that James didn't do anything to expand on that or give Adrian a legitimate arc this season alongside everyone else. Saying well vigilante is so crazy, he will never change is honestly lazy writing to me and it's disappointing when I know James could give him the nuance, depth, and growth he deserves.
Adrian is really enjoyable to watch, but he would be more interesting if he actually got character development. I don’t mean making him grow into a more moral or balanced person, but just having any kind of arc. I think he could survive changing a little bit. but I’m not sure that James Gunn views him as a character that can sustain his role if he changes at all, or even views the character as someone capable of change in the first place.
i’m on the verge of writing a detailed restructuring episode by episode bc i am so so frustrated by this season. it wasn’t HORRIBLE but oh my god oh my god i see so many ways it could’ve been executed differently, BETTER.
damn James Gunn just personally shot and killed every vigilmaker shipper in existence
sorry just heard james gunn say originally MURN WAS GONNA BE THE LEADER OF THE SONS OF LIBERTY?!!?! EX FUCKING SCUSE ME?!?? i just like. god. we gave THAT up for more slo mo montages of chris and harcourt? for 35 minute episodes? he talks like they had to cut soooo much and then each episode is the length of a fucking disney channel original. god. would have been so cool to bring murn back.
at first i thought it was stupid how chris missed such obvious signs of nazism but then i realize that's an apt metaphor for allocishet white guys are oblivious to all forms of oppression
It's so frustrating to me how Chris is to Harcourt, she already said MULTIPLE times that their relationship (or the boat thing that Chris keeps mentioning) didn't mean anything. She deadass says "NO" directly to his face everytime Chris tries to bring it up, but does he listen? NO! He keeps pushing that they were somewhat 'something' and just can't register it in his brain that NO means (suprise!) NO. Chris killed her friend man, and she was dealing with her own shit too. Rejected by almost every organization denying her a LIVING after serving her country for YEARS, ofc she'd be desperate. She could've gotten a position in an organization she specializes in for the price of turning Peacemaker in, but she sacrificed that to save his damn life (which he should be grateful for but he stupidly misunderstood that and viewed it as betrayal so he ran to alternate dimension Harcourt). I still don't know if they really have something going on (cz it's implied but it's hard to say cz Harcourt constantly said it didn't mean anything), from what i think she saved him because they were friends (since they bonded, fighting an alien invasion together). What i'm trying to say is, i get it man Chris has issues, but JEEZ Harcourt doesn't owe him jack shit.
