Love Between Fairy and Devil | Ep 18
we are the flower-thou the sun
Taylor's last moment on stage. Behind her the mysterious door that came from above during "Karma". This reddit user points out that the moment is similar to The Truman show ending!
Truman is begged not to leave his life in the "fishbowl" behind - he's brought people joy and hope, and he has millions of fans counting on him. But he says his catchphrase one last time, stretches out his arms, and takes a final bow.
Taylor stands in front of the door and stretches out her arms to take a final bow before disappearing into the stage.
Truman makes the choice to leave behind the only life he's ever known -a life of comfort and safety, but ultimately a life of inauthenticity. He leaves for the unknown, for the unpredictable, for the chance at a real life. IF THAT WASN'T ENOUGH, before finding the door, Truman finds stairs leading up into the clouds. Sound familiar?
(Many have already pointed out that the ascent into the clouds also mirrors the cover for the lesbian magazine The Ladder - but perhaps there's a bit of both?)

mastermind is such a sad song. it throws back to the whole idea beneath mirrorball. it’s the no one liked me for who i was, so i’ll turn into something else that shines, that gleams, and then you’ll like me. then you’ll want to play with me. this is such a melancholy thought, to feel like you have to morph into something to make others around like you.
i’m never getting over this album.
You had to kill me, but it killed you just the same

I swear I loved you ‘til my dying day
forever bitter that one of the only people in Ravka with shadow powers is made out to be the villain. what a wasted opportunity to subvert tropes and explore the burden of ostracization and society’s need to place people into boxes. it’s the most bland fucking plot twist. of course the guy with darkness powers is fucking evil, because god forbid we get the proper coming of age story Alina should have had and create a complex foil capable of helping her find her sense of self and her inner strength. god forbid you let your characters break free of the roles they’ve been forced into and allow them to grow as they should. god forbid you critique society instead of the man society abandoned.
Playing with light = good and dark = bad would have been so incredibly easy too.
Alina summons the Sun.
There’s an inherent duality to the sun, it sustains life, certainly.
It also burns. Consumes.
The sun gives life, but it could just as easily burn it all down. Alina could set the world on fire, the Darkling could smother it.
The Darkling summons Shadow.
Shadows only exist in the sun. He cannot be without her.
Shadows are shelter from the sun’s scorching heat, they shelter us, hide us, provide refuge.
If there’s one thing Grisha need in this universe- it’s shelter from those that would do them harm.
This duality was dangled in many other parts of the books, but ultimately denied. Like calls to like, each to balance the other, yet none of it ends up meaning anything.
Leigh: I'm gonna make a dark edgy universe with ongoing genocide on witches for centuries. It'll be like the Avatar but the elements of the four nations are: Nazi Witch Hunters, Persecution, Prison camps to torture and experiment on witches, and Slavery.
And then, I'm gonna make a character who fights back, creates a safe space for witches, finds a way to make them indispensable to the king, and plans to put an end to the ongoing genocide.
Readers with functional braincells: Is that your hero?
Leigh: Hero? No! Oh God, no!!! Where did you get that impression??? He's the VILLAIN with a capital V!!! Ugh, I guess I'll have to add more nonsensical mustache twirling evil villainous visuals to make it clear. Maybe throw in a black cape and shadow magic into the mix while I'm at it.
Readers still refusing to shut their brain before reading YA: So what do your heroic leaders want?
Leigh: Its really brilliant and subversive actually! Get rich quick hustles for money. Housewife to the first boy to talk to her. And inherit a royal title from his father.
Readers refusing to kill their reading comprehension: So what about the persecuted witches?
Leigh: What about them? Oh...maybe I'll make up magic cocaine that's highly addictive to the witches and overworks them to death to speed up the genocide now that the horrible evil villain advocating for them is dead and modern technology renders grisha useless anyway. No point in letting them just live am I right? xoxo grimdark edgelord girl
The Darkling: *saves the protagonist from a hate crime, is hated by his entire country even though he keeps them safe, created a safe haven for a persecuted group, gently encourages the protagonist when she's insecure, wants the protagonist to be proud of herself*
Readers: Oooh, is this the love interest?
Author: Stupid reader! That's the villain! You were seduced by his pretty face and didn't see the pure evil lurking within!!! 👿
Readers: Um...........okay then.
Mal: *barely shows any interest in the protagonist, gets jealous of her success, whines about how she's independent and doesn't need his ass dragging her down anymore, wishes he could carve the protagonist's powers out of her to satisfy his fragile ego, doesn't give a shit about a geopolitical situation*
Readers: Ugh, what a toxic asshole. Is he the villain?
Author: No, silly! He's the ~real~ love interest! Look at how they fight all the time and how he makes her so miserable! 😍
Readers: what the fuck did i just read
