     he could feel his heart pounding out his chest   —  a sensation of nerves which even finn hadn’t felt before as he would swear a few more moments longer and the feeling of nausea would become a reality.  he hadn’t allowed himself to think about what he’d do if xander said no. it was the scariest thing to imagine … to suddenly find himself this vulnerably even before the one person he trusted more than anything.  at least xander’s smile helped, so familiar that it made everything that little bit easier.    “   — yes?   ”   he repeated the word as if to try and be sure it was real  …  grateful for xander doing the same thing as the air started to return to finn’s lungs for the first time since he’d started speaking.    “  oh, thank god.   ”   words broke quietly through the cracking of his own voice, lips pulling to an impossibly beaming smile as he straightened up to kiss his  fiancé.    “  i love you so - so much.  ”  which of course had to be obvious by now and yet he still needed to say it as he moved back just a little, pulling the sleeve of his free hand down in a quick attempt to rub it over his eyes  —  finn didn’t cry.  at least in his life there had been very few occasions of it,  but this was a different type of tears threatening to spill over.   the happy and relieved sort,  because he was about to get to start the rest of his life with the person he never wanted to be without.   “   wait  —  wait,  you still need the ring.  ”  a small laugh broke through the beaming of his lips as took it from the box, reaching for xander’s hand make it official as he placed the band on the other’s finger before kissing him once more. 

     xander had dreamed about this day but he had never thought that it would happen quite so soon. not that he would ever complain. he loved finn so much and he honestly couldn’t wait to become his husband. xander had known for a while that he was going to spend his life with finn and it was so nice that the other had taken it upon himself to confirm that. he couldn’t help but imagine how excited his parents would be, finns sister. they were their biggest supporters and xander was so happy with that. “  of course i want to marry you.  ” xander laughed as he listened to the other. he had no other thoughts in his head. xander had almost let finn go once before ,there was no way that he was going to let that happen again now. “  really? is that why you asked me to marry you?  ” xander asked, teasing slightly, before he laughed.  “  i love you too.  ” he muttered quickly pecking the others lips. he smiled as he looked down at the ring. he was still in disbelief that this was even happening but he was so, so happy that it was. “  we’re gonna get married!  ” he laughed as he shook his head slightly and wrapped his arms around his, now, fiance.

  “  that’s not the point  —  he told me to leave you alone and i was leaving you alone.  i was trying to do the right thing.   ”   he muttered, fingers racking in frustration back through dark locks.  of course the threats of her younger brother didn’t bother him in terms of getting hurt but they sure made a point in relation to what the other people in her life thought of him.  it was given after what he’d done…  but hearing it aloud had hit that home.  plus, how was he meant to know if the same message would come from alicia.   “  yeah, well…  maybe i want you to want better.   ”   head shook softly, lacking the energy to meet her snapping when it was late and they both knew where they stood   —   the same variation of a fight they’ had over and over again,  because wasn’t that the whole problem?   “   i’m not asking to be in your life with any form of commitment.  ”  he answered back quietly, sigh escaping his lips as his head rested back against the solid wall, eye flicking briefly up to the ceiling.  “  maybe they’ll get better   —  maybe they won’t.  you don’t have to wait around for that. i just want to go back to being your friend.  ”  they both knew he didn’t have any others.  besides, they had already reached the point he was scared of to begin with…  things could do wrong and he would lose her for good.  well, that had already happened.   and it was moments like the words which followed that reminded him just how much it hurt in a way that no amount of alcohol could dull.   “  —  you’ve always been the best part of mine too.  ”   words muttered softly instead.

     “  he told you to what ?! ” alicia snapped. not because she was mad at toby but because she was furious at finn. if he had really told toby to stay away from her she would be so annoyed at him and she was almost certain that her brother knew that. she knew that her brother was protective over her, the same could be said vice verson, but she could not believe that finn would tell toby that she didn’t want to see him. not when he had seen how upset she had been because of him. she thought that her brother knew she wanted him in her life. he either knew and didn’t care, or didn’t listen to her as much as he thought he did. “  i never told him to tell you to stay away.  ” she shook her head slightly. as she heard his next words, alicia moved  a little closer to toby. “ i really wish you could see yourself as i do, toby.  ” she muttered and tentatively sat down on the bed beside him. “  you’re not this bad person that you keep telling yourself you are. you’re - you are so much more than that. i promise you.  ” she knew he had his flaws, but so did she. she didn’t want them to be the reason that stopped him having happiness. she sighed. alicia knew that, to have him back in her life, it would be all or nothing. she had such deep feelings for toby, that she knew it couldn’t be anything else. “ you just want to be my friend? ” alicia asked. it stung. she had thought that they were on the track for more than that and while toby had hurt her, she was willing to work towards giving it all another try... and yet he seemed too scared for that. “  then why did you push me away?  ” she whispered, her voice cracking slightly.
