Earth's climate has never been stable. Climate change has been the norm. What is different about the climate change facing us today is that we are its cause. Never has a single species of animal been seen in such great numbers and with unprecedented power to alter the environment. Homo sapiens is in plague proportions.

If we are to survive, our only option is to change our ways. If we continue to allow carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases to enter the atmosphere without sufficient checks and balances, temperatures will rise quickly. If we act now, however, we may still save ourselves and the biosphere on which we depend.

*The Greenhouse Effect*

The greenhouse effect is a natural phenomenon that has occurred throughout the planet's history. It is what keeps Earth's surface warm enough to be inhabited by life.

What we are currently facing, however, is the rapidly accelerating addition of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere from human activities. This significantly increases average global temperature.

An Odometer Moment on a Warming Planet

For those who might be keeping score, we just passed the 333rd consecutive month of global temperatures above the 20th-century average.

November 2012 was the fifth-warmest November since records began in 1880, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said in its monthly climate report. The agency calculated that the 10 warmest Novembers on record have all occurred within the past 12 years.
